New Food
I was shopping at my local Asian market and found something awesome. I bought a bag of "mixed grains". There's no brand name on the bag in English. This stuff is so yummy. It has a nice nutty, kinda earthy flavor and smells great while cooking. It's also VERY filling. I am IN LOVE. It's also not a bad $ buy - a 5lb. bag (about 50 servings) cost me $10 (20 cents per serving).
Ingredients: brown rice, sweet brown rice, barley, red beans, blackeyed peas, kidney beans, and purple sticky rice.
Nutrition:
serving - 45g dry (it's about a cup once cooked)

Wow! That does sound good! I'd have to only cook a cup at a time...

I love that stuff! I always keep it on hand. For a while, I was obsessed making it a couple times per week

Now that I know about it I figure I will do it the way I do beans or rice. I cook huge batches and then freeze it in single portions.
I discovered with my dinner that it is really amazing with kimchi.
I had a serving of that, 4 oz. tilapia, 50g kimchi, and 75g spinach. I'm stuffed and it was just 270 calories.

Yummy, it sounds soooo good! Since I've started eating healthy I've fallen in love with rice & beans...it's filling, it tastes good, and it's easy to make. I haven't thought to shop some of the ethnic groceries in my area, but its a great idea. Thanks for sharing!!!!!

That sounds like something totally up my alley. I have to check and see if I can find somewhere. It'll be a good mission for this weekend. Thanks for sharing!

Gracie - you can find some really great stuff at ethnic markets. I love to go get interesting veggies. They always have things I don't find in normal stores and everything is always so fresh. You can also find some really interesting spices. I love Spanish markets for the seasonings - mmmm. Sometimes you can also find some of the same things you would get at the regular grocery for a lot less $. I pay about $1 per serving for wild rice at the commissary (on base grocery store, which is generally cheaper than civilian stores), at the Asian market I can get it for 15-25 cent per serving depending on if it's regular or fast cook. I also get fish really cheap there. For my husband and I they are a must. I was raised an air force brat and he is in the air force. Being an air force family we are used to many non-american foods, and some of the things we eat we can only find in ethnic markets.
You should definitely look around your area for some of these places. They are awesome.
