Someone please help (scales)

I am needing some scales for home that go up to 400lbs. If anyone has any that go up to this amount. Please let me know the brand and where you bought them. I really need to find some. Thanks.

Taylor 909 ProHelix Professional Medical Grade Scale <-- this is what I found on Amazon. Unfortunately, almost anything you buy is going to be fairly expensive for that weight range (been there, done that). This particular one is $49.95, which isn't tooooo bad.

tracyj1978 02-18-2006 12:30 AM

Thanks for looking for me, I really appreciate it. I would rather pay for some scales than to pay for a membership to ww which i wont use. Thank you again.

400 LB Digital Body Fat Monitor Bathroom Scale <-- Do a search for this on Amazon. Same price range, better options. And you're quite welcome =)

tracyj1978 02-18-2006 12:44 AM

Hi Tracy--

If you go to eBay and put in that you're looking for scales you will probably be shown Old Will Knot's site. He sells scales--the one that I bought is digital and goes up to 440 lbs. I think I paid almost $50 for it. It's accurate up to .2 on your weight and (knock on wood ;) ) I haven't had any problems with it. :o Actually I had one--a friend of ours put his very wet towels on it and it kind of shorted out until it was dry. Since it dried out it's as good as new. :D We have a hot tub which is why he was there in the first place and why all of his stuff was so wet. Normal everyday use in the bathroom doesn't hurt it all. We moved ours into another room because of that one problem that one time.

Good luck! :)

Vicki

Thanks for the heads up will go look at those. That sounds great if they will go up to 440. Thanks.

Ebay, half dot com, and Overstock dot com generally have some really good deals for scales. Good luck, and let us know which one you got and how it works for you!

Well i went to an official ww today and weighed and i actually only weigh 380.8, so pretty soon i will be able to get a set that only goes to 380.. whoo hoo. I was at walmart today and actually found some weight watcher scales that went up to 380 so i am thinking about just getting those and they come with a half off of joining fee so i can go to ww for a few weeks and then just stop and use my scales once i see how they compare with theirs. That is probably what ill do. The scales were only 35 dollars too. Thank you so much for all of your help. I appreciate it lots.

tracyj1978 02-19-2006 01:42 AM

Well i went back to walmart tonite and got the WW scales, and got up to the register and instead of ringing up for 35 they rang up for 30.. whoo hoo.

Well I just bought a digital one, and it's awesome! (I had a problem with the dial jiggling on my old scale and when I leaned over to read the scale it would jiggle the needle, so not accurate! So, get digital if you can, my advice.) It's a "Taylor Weight Management Scale' it was at a Canadian store, but you might be able to find the same one somewhere in your state. It was only $60CAD here...very cheap for a 400LB scale. Hope you can find it somewhere, it's been VERY VERY accurate. :D

i bought the WW ones last nite. I am hoping they work out well for me. If not i guess ill be taking them back and finding me some more.

I had that happen with my kitchen digitial scales one time too. It had happend occasionally in the past- water getting spilled on the counter or something and within a couple days it would be fine. We were going on vacation for 1 1/2 weeks and figured that would be long enough for it to dry out the last time, but it still didn't work when we got back so I ended up buying a new one. Of course we decided to test the old scales one last time before throwing them out a month or so later and wouldn't you know it, they worked fine. So now I have 2 sets of digital kitchen scales...though I have my eyes set on the one GardenWife recomends, if I start selling a lot of stuff on Ebay...can't justify buying another just for kitchen use when I have 2 working ones :D

As for bathroom scales- I find I like the digital ones best. If you're over the weight limit, they tell you- with that ever ominous EEE; where spring scales tend to get hinky if you're near the top of the weight limit and may not clearly tell you if you're over. Plus you can fudge the reading like you can on analog scale- if it says 273.5, then that's what it is. My only complaint about mine is that its suppose to have a lifetime battery...but one of my cats likes to sleep on the scales & I don't think they consider 20-30 'uses' per day typical use. I try to put them up but then its harder to weigh myself daily, like I need to. Next scales will have a replacable battery ;)

tracyj1978 02-19-2006 09:38 PM

How much did you pay for your digital kitchen scales. I need a set of those too. If you want to sell a set of them let me know.

as for the weight scales. I am not sure what to think right now. When i bought the scales on yesterday. That same day i had went to an official weight watchers location and weighed. They had me weighed at 380.8, but this morning just for kicks and because i wanted to try out my new scales i hoped on them, and it showed me only weighing 377. something. I was not sure what to think. Thinking that because the weight limit on them is 380 and i am .8 of a pound over that they were maybe not reading correctly. I dont know what to think. Do you think that maybe they arent accurate. Or could i really only weigh 377 and the ww scales be different?????

christineu 02-19-2006 10:00 PM

Your weight flucuates about 5 pounds per day, depending on how much water you drink/don't drink, sodium intake, etc. In our weight range, it may even be a little more, since we have more water and therefor more room for dramatic swings. There are times because of my medical problems, that I have to weigh myself morning & night daily- its amazing to see how much the numbers can jump around in just 12 hours. If I don't get enough water, I can see it in the scales as my body starts conserving all the water it can and my weight goes up a couple pounds. When I up my intake again, it goes back down pretty quickly, which is the opposite of what most people would think.

As far as weight loss tracking, its probably best to pick one day/time a week that will be your official weigh in- like with your Weight Watchers meeting, even if you weigh yourself daily. Some people suggest that if you weigh every day, then you should take the average of the weights as your 'official' weight for the week, which makes sense. Losign weight is not a race, its not a steady downward path- it takes time and you will see ups & downs within your weight, even over just a few days. Personally, I do tend to weigh myself most days- I don't neccessarily write it down or anything, but just watch that I don't go more then 4-5 pounds above my lowest number...if I do, then I know I'm not doing something right and need to get back on track. I know for me that if I start avoiding the scale that I'm probably off track and in denial. The scale helps keep me focused and on program, but I don't let the number on the scale ruin my day- its just a number that can help guide me.

tracyj1978 02-19-2006 10:08 PM

well see what im trying to do though is get out of joining weight watchers. I am going to go to a few meetings just to see how their scales match up with mine. Then from then on i want to do it at home. I have tried going to meetings before and i have never gotten anything out of them. They bore me to death. So i figured once i get down below 380 i can use the ww scales i bought. Thing is its not adding up to what the official ww scales at their office is. I weighed on sat. and i am actually going to make my official weigh in day on wed because thats my day off. So wed i will actually join ww for a few weeks, so i will be weighing then. I am hoping that its below 380 so that i can compare with the scales i have. Even though the scales i have already say im 377. Im so confused. <<< pulls hair out >>> there should be a few pounds lighter now..lol

christineu 02-20-2006 12:42 AM

Also- I know when I weigh myself at home, I don't tend to have much on at all...and for some reason they frown on that at WW ;) If you had heavy winter clothes and shoes, it can make a big difference too. The best way to compare scales is to weigh yourself wearing the same clothes/shoes right before you leave or as soon as you get home- and try to not eat, drink, use the bathroom, etc between the two weigh ins. I've done that in the past to see how accurate my scales are compared to my doctors office- and they are pretty good. Its also helped me to realize its okay that if the doctors scales say I weigh 4#'s more then what I weighed this morning at home, because I probably do by that time in the day with all my clothes on.

Most digitial scales will give you the big ol' EEE if you're over their weight limit. You could try holding something that weighs 5 pounds or so, just to see if yours do. A gallon of milk or water weighs about 8 pounds- that should do it. I find my digital scales are pretty accurate, even when I'm in the 'danger zone' of close to 330- and mine were a cheap set I bought a few years ago when I did WW. I did the same thing- I joined for a short period of time, until I had all the basic info, then I did it on my own. One of my issues at the time was between my job and grad school (which were 150 miles appart- I lived in the middle), I couldn't go to the same meeting two week in a row so I never got to really know anyone feel like I belonged. And they all used different types of scales, so I questioned how acurate my weigh ins were. I think the whole Points program is a great system- I still use it to put a value on food to this day, though at this point I have to monitor more things so I am using FitDay.

tracyj1978 02-20-2006 12:54 AM

Thank you so much christineu. I appreciate your feedback. I started my ww back following the plan officially on wednesday. So technically this wed will be my official weigh in day. I basically went and weighed Sat because i wanted to know where i stood. So i will go straight and weigh and come straight home and see what happens. Either that or take them with me and do it there..lol wont i look like an idiot..lol
