Sick, Tired & Maintaining
Hello,
I was wondering if having a cold affects weight loss? Has anyone experienced gaining a little or maintaining while being sick? Also, does stress affect weight loss? I mean I know my personal answers, as least when it comes to stress, but I wanted to hear what others had to say. Thanks. Rosie |
Hi Rosie :)
I don't normally post here, but I wanted to say that I've heard some vague stuff about stress causing an overdose of certain hormones, which some people believe may lead to your body holding onto fat. I can't cite any studies or anything, it's just something that I've "heard," if that makes sense. There may be more info about it on the internet. I hope you feel better soon :) . |
Hi Rosie,
I was wondering this same thing today! I have a cold and am feeling so drained. Yesterday at my WI I stayed the same. It was the first time I didn't have a loss - I am 135 pounds overweight so I shouldn't be stopping a loss already! But I feel like I'm holding water and it is extremely hot and humid right now and I feel like I'm probably retaining water too - Was wondering if the cold has anything to do with it too - |

There are a couple of ways though that we can help out. If you are thinking about buying anything at Amazon, why not help out 3FC at the same time? You can do this by clicking on the button for Amazon on any page in the forum, or by clicking on the button on the main 3FC page at www.3fatchicks.com . A portion of your purchase price will be given to 3FC by Amazon. It doesn't increase your price at all, but it does help out 3FC. Also, BTW, in case you didn't know it, you can view the message boards "ad free" for a minimal charge. I think it's like $15 for 6 months. A very small investment to be rid of the annoying ads and make your pages load quicker. There have been some concerns expressed by the powers that be about copyright infringement. Good Afternoon All,
Just wanted to quickly check in and say that today I have been back on track, no problem. It's nearly lunch time and I think I will have a bagel with ham. Hope everybody is having a good day, speak to you again soon. Hugs, Ammi  |
Ammi, It is great that you are back on track! You have done so great thus far!!!
Today is going to be a long day. I have been up since 5am sick at my stomach. Have any of you ever tried the low carb diet tortillas? They are 1 pt on WW instead of 4 or 5 pts that the reg ones are. That is the only thing that we have eaten different lately and my DH and I both can't stay off of the potty. I think I may have over done it with the tortillas last night. They were good but I think only 1 from now on. :) Hope eveyone is having a great day today! |
Hi gals:
Ammi: glad you are back on track! It feels good, doesn't it? Manda: I've tried those tortillias, but have not had problems with them. They are pretty tasty though! I peeked at the scale today--I'm only two pounds away from TWO-Town!! |
Rosie,
I couldn't get a flu shot last year and ended up sick for a whole week with the flu in February. I didn't lose any weight that week at all. Of course, sick as I was, I was extremely inactive. My calories might have been up, too, since I was focused on easy to prepare comfort foods: canned soups, smoothies to get in OJ and yogurt and fruits that I wasn't up to swallowing otherwise, and grilled cheese. I was pretty sick and didn't eat much for the first few days, but I still didn't lose anything. When you're sick/very stressed, I think it's fair to focus on maintenance rather than challenging yourself and expecting a loss that might not happen (further contributing to your stress!) |
Thank you to those who have replied to my post thus far. Your insight, openness, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Anyone who has anything else to add, I'd be more than willing to read/listen. :)

Scared of going to the doctor
I broke down and made a doctor's appointment for next month, a general checkup. And I'm already anxious about it.
I really have a huge phobia over doctors. I avoid them whenever possible. I make it into the obgyn about every year or two for an exam, and that's pretty much it. And usually, only then when I'm concerned about something (which ends up being nothing in most cases). So now I have this checkup. I don't like people poking and prodding at me. I don't want to hear that I need to lose weight, as if it had escaped my notice that I weigh nearly 300 pounds. And I'm worried, since I haven't had a proper checkup in 5 years, that I'm just in horrible health: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, who knows. I was borderline on a lot of stuff 4 or 5 years ago, and I'm getting less healthy, not moreso. I know, I know, it's best to know what's wrong with you so you can treat it. If you're sick (and I'm a hypochondriac, so I imagine I have lots of things wrong with me) knowing up front is best, letting it go seldom makes it better. But still, just, emotionally I'm in the state where I think if I don't know about it, I can avoid it. Anyone else doctor phobic and get over it? Or have words of advice? |
Hi Rosie,
I think it depends HOW sick you are. If I'm very sick (like after surgery) I don't want to eat anything and tend to lose a few pounds. If it's just a bad cold I tend to "baby" myself and reach for comfort foods (which I think is ok in moderation). The tough part is when you get better and "forget" to stop babying! I'm just getting over a horrendous cold and thought I might have gained a bit as I wasn't watching what I ate for a few days. I weighed myself today and I was glad to see I was actually down a pound! I've read that stress DOES contribute to weight gain as it increases the stress hormone, cortisol. Here is an interesting article on the subject http://stress.about.com/cs/cortisol/a/cortweight.htm. Also, stress sometimes causes lack of sleep, which can also lead to weight gain. Finding ways to handle stress is probably very important in our battle to lose weight. :df: |
To be honest, I'm right there with you. I dont have any major concerns (a few, but not to pull my hair out over). But the thought of someone inspecting and analyzing my imperfections, kind of gives me a funny feeling too. Now that I'm out of college I'm no longer under my parent's insurance so I can't go for a physical. So unfortunately I never faced the music. I probably haven't been to the Dr. for 2.5 yrs. I guess my advice would be to take the opportunity to improve yourself. Alot of people let things go unnoticed and they develop worse and some do the what if I had known.....(fill in the blank). So take you and your fears to the Dr. and share them with him. I personally plan on changing mine when I get my own insurance but that's cause I think mine's a quack haha.

Ammi: We met briefly when you first joined, but I don't post often enough to make it memorable. I think that you first joined about when I hit 299, because I was inspired by that milestone to pop out and post. I remember that you were concerned about a scale addiction and the possible negative consequences that early disappointments might have on your resolve. Good for you for getting back on track, and congrats on your success thus far.
Manda: I've not had a bad reaction to any sort of low-carb/whole wheat tortillas. I wonder if you and your husband might've had a bit of food poisoning from something else you had, even if it's something you normally might have. Plenty of normal foods can get a tad contaminated. I really love these organic tortillas that a small market near me carries: they have spinach, herb/pesto, sundried tomato and honey/whole wheat tortillas that are a tad over 100 calories each, or 2 points. Great for wrap-making. Personally, I don't fight the food demon much lately. Okay, last week, I bought a jar of cashew butter ($9.00 for a teeny jar!), which is supposedly healthier than peanut butter. And that may well be, but it is also infinitely more delicious than peanut butter and therefore a total trigger food for me, so in the trash it went. The shopping demon, however, can't be so easily trashed. I'm really obsessed (quite suddenly) with finding a real pair of jeans that fit me. I did find a pair that I really liked and that looked great in the legs at Sprawl-Mart, but they were too tight in the waist/stomach, and it looked like Sprawl-Mart didn't carry anything higher than that size, a 24, in that style. I considered buying them anyway, but didn't, and couldn't find anything I liked. I tried on a pair of "Just My Size" plus-size jeans, 26 WP, related fit, but the legs seemed really big and the pants themselves were four inches too long, despite being (allegedly) petite. I even considered buying more stretch denim leggins, but I'm between sizes there. Jeans! I want jeans! |
Words of advice.....
Rabidstoat-
I work in a doctors office, and have worked in the medical field for many years- the biggest thing you need to remember is that the doctors work for you! You are paying them. So often, people are intimidated by doctors, but they are just people like us. Are you afraid to tell your hairdresser what you want? (hopefully not) It's not really that much different. You are paying for a service, and for advice. Before you go, write a list of questions- no matter how bizarre they might be. Make sure that you get all of your questions answered. The first thing you need to say (after hello, of course) when they walk in the room is that you have a list of questions for them, and have the paper ready in your hand. Yes, it may be hard to be told that you need to lose weight, or that there might be something wrong, but SO many things are preventable and/or able to be well managed if they are caught early. Especially things like high BP and diabetes, if that is what you may have. And the other big thing is that if you don't like the first doctor you see, find another one! If you had a terrible haircut, would you go back to the same person? NO! So, if you don't like the doctor you see, switch! People switch doctors all the time. As in life, sometimes people "click" and sometimes they don't. You do not need to return to a doctor that made you feel guilty or didn't listen and validate your health concerns, or even if you didn't like them. Personally, I prefer to see a female physician assistant over a medical doctor. Female because I think women are more compassionate, and a physician assistant because (in my experience) they spend a little more time listening and talking than a medical doctor. But again, that is my personal preference. Bottom line- face your fears. As a fellow hypochondriac (and believe you me, I work in the medical field so I can imagine many more illnesses than most people know about!) what you imagine is always way worse than reality. Medical professionals are here to help, and play a very important role in living a long and happy life. You owe it to yourself, and to those who love you to do this. Hope this helps! :D |
