Book study/ Acknowledgement/4-28 to 5-1
Greetings to all lurkers and posters.
This is going to be a new thread topic focused on "studying" Dr Phils The Ultimate Weight Solution We invite you to read the entire book or take it one chapter at a time, following the discussion within this thread. We will begin discussing Chapter One onSunday.. May 2, 2004 Each Sunday we will start discussing the next chapter for that week. This will be a 12 week program. We hope all of you join in every week. It is recommended you have a pen, pencil and/or a colored highlighter with you as you read. Mark every word, sentence, phrase or paragraph that hit home for YOU. Read each chapter as if you are going to be tested .. (You're not going to be tested) ;) Then come to this thread and share what hit home for you... what you took away with you from that chapter and how you are incorporating it into YOUR life. Feel free to post often ... you may get a dozen different topics you want to share per each chapter. I know many can read the entire book in an evening... others will need a week... while some of us may need the entire 12 weeks. There are 12 chapters ... plus a few extra topics at the end. But the idea of this thread is to share what we learned from each chapter and learn from others insights. You do not have to be a Dr. Phil fan... many here are not. BUT... let's face it... we can all learn something new that just might be what will make a difference. Each Sunday anyone can feel free to copy and paste this introduction and then start the new study. Be sure to title it Book Study /Chapter #/ date-date We are looking forward to reading everyones input. :) |
Acknowledgement....
Well it is not Monday yet but I decided to start off with the book jacket and "Acknowledgement" for the weekend.
I think I will start with page ix found in the "Acknowledgement". I highlighted 4 lines on this page. 1. "a definitive work on the management of obesity" I spend/waste so much time wishing I was one of those 'naturally thin' people. You know the type... they can eat anything and never gain a pound. Grrrr. LOL I am NOT one of those people... and I need to quit wasting my energy wishing I were. I need to learn how to MANAGE my obesity. Learn portion control because my body does not know when it is full. I don't get those signals 'normal' eaters get. I never feel satisfied... I always ate until it was gone. Management of obesity... yes.. I need that. 2. "embracing self-respect" If I am full of SHAME... then there is little room for self respect. I need to focus on letting go of the shame and embrace self-respect. But the question is... how do you do that ?? I begin by listing how I show respect to others. I don't call them names.. like fat slob, stupid, ugly. I don't tell them they are worthless just because they made mistakes in the past. I do tell them they look nice and are nice. I give their opinions space for contemplating. I LEARN to respect myself by first showing myself the same respect I show strangers. 3. "Regarding your body and mind as a gift to be managed with dignity" Have you ever given a gift to child or adult and they toss it aside or kick it under the bed ? You know how mad that makes you? They treat it with no respect at all. Well.. that is how many of us.. oopps ME... sometimes treat myself. My body and mind are gifts to me. I need to treat both with dignity. Ignoring your body is not treating it with respect... it is ignoring it. Degradeing yourself is NOT treating yourself with respect.. it is degrading. How do you change this?? Well I am sure this book will tell us.. but until then ... I am going to stop myself everytime I catch myself calling myself hopeless, stupid, fat, etc. 4."a passionate supporter" ENTHUSIASM is contagious !!! :D Doing this book study with Passion and enthusiasm will keep me going better than griping and complaining. Do you always feel enthusiasm.. of course not... but if you make it a goal to be Happy and Enthusiastic and PASSIONATE it is more likely you will have more good days than bad. Do you sometimes have to "force yourself" to be happy ? ... YES !!!! But it is worth it. Okay.. that is the first page of the acknowledgment. What I found. What did you find ?? What about the next page ???? What did you find there?? You don't have to write it in the same format I did... just start typing... share any ole way you want. |
Well, I haven't gotten my book yet, but I think it's going to be a good one! Hopefully it will come today ;) Just reading what 2Cute got out of it . . .
I think for me the big issue is going to be the self-respect portion. Yes, I am ashamed of myself & feel that I am disgusting. I think that I'm pretty good at respecting others and telling them that they look nice, etc, I just don't tell myself that. I guess that is one thing I'll start working on. :dizzy: Lisa |
I'm definitely interested, but I gotta be honest. Is Dr. Phil's plan based on the whole low carb lifestyle? I tried south beach and that didn't agree with me, in fact I got quite ill...
|
No.. it is not based on low carb. I don't think it is any specific food plan except healthy eating. I have not read the book yet but just reading his "acknowledgement" I got the impression it is just
"Wise fooed choices" and moving our bodies... the all important EXERCISE. :strong: His book will focus more on why we eat than what we eat.... I think. LOL And "how to" CHANGE. |
I'm In
Hey ladies,
I will join you on your study of Dr. Phil's book. I bought it months ago, but never got past the first few pages. I recommitted myself and plan to start anew tomorrow. I am even going to have my hubby take a picture of me for the new beginning. I will post once I finish chapter one. Susie |
Yippee
I am so glad to see the book club. I have been in a funk for several weeks, and I saw Dr. Phil's program too. I think the focus on why I eat will help a great deal. I catch myself eating because I am stressed, nervous, bored, sad, - you get the idea, any emotion is a reason to eat.
thanks for starting this thread. I still don't have my internet connection fixed, so I am using Blue's computer when I can. laters Judy |
:cb: My book finally came in the mail today - now I can get going and get caught up!
kantsing - loved the Emerson quote at the end of your post :flow1: I know I eat for the same reasons - maybe we can get into our heads and fix ourselves  ! Gotta run - have an awesome weekend!! Tootles :sunny: Lisa |
hey, i think i'll pick up the book tomorrow..especially if it's true that the book is based on emotional eating, and isn't another silly little fad diet. if it's a book that inspires, i will get it....come on...does it inspire???:p
