Exercise for someone 400+ lbs

Just looking for some recomendations/ideas for exercing when you are 400+ lbs. I am going to try walking more which I know is a big one. I have looked at differnt "equipment" but the weight capasity on most things are for people under 300lbs.

Hi, I would try swimming or water aerobics if you have access to a pool. Or you can get your heartbeat up by punches with your arms while sitting. Good luck! We can do this!

I am about 415 .. I workout in the swimming pool at my local gym . You can find lots of stuff on you tube to show you how. I hate walking at this weight because I carry alot of my weight in my belly and it pulls my lower back so the water is a great place for me.

I added you to my buddy list . We seem to have about the same amount of weight to loose. :)

I did do water arobics a few years back at the YMCA and loved it! Actually lost about 80lbs. Wish I could afford the membership now. I fall right into the catagory of "you make to much", which is a joke. I will see if any of our local high schools offer anything at there pools. I love to walk but being that it is winter in MI, that is sometimes hard. Plus my knee does not coperate some days. I too added you as a buddy.

I agree about swimming and water workouts! You can get foam water weights and other equipment such as "zoomers" (short fins) which add resistance. If you have trouble finding a swimsuit, get spandex "biking" shorts and one of the silky type tank tops such as are worn under sheer blouses. I have a hip problem so am limited in what I can do but in the water I can do things. It can be a great workout.

Also, you can do a lot with simple resistance bands. I even lie in bed at times, turn on some YouTube music on my computer, and work out. Plus 3 pound Danskin weight balls.

Go for it!! You can do it!

There is an "Exerpeutic" walking treadmill with a weight capacity of 400 lbs. It is less than $400 and goes from .4 MPH to 4 MPH in .1 MPH increments.

But yes: walking.

I'm not sure how fit you are and that dictates alot of it. Even when I was 370 lbs I gardened and mowed my lawn and did everything around the house, so was relatively fit for my size. If you have been completely sedentary, talk to a doctor.

But walking, starting in 5-10 minute increments, even just around your house. I would also recommend checking out Richard Simmons' fitness videos. They're nice, as they can be scaled, and there are always people of all sizes working out in them.

edoetsch1 I started off really struggling to walk the less than a quarter of a mile to my son's school ( which included a hill). I have real old lady knees in part due to my weight and my doc and I decided that I was better off taking some mild analgesia to walk in order to start to lose the weight. It walked and before I was sick with my chest I was walking over 2.5 miles a day quite quickly for me with no after effects! I also swim when I can.
Of course we only have rain to deal with here in Wales not snow!
It takes time and patience neither of which I easily deal with!
Good Luck, you can do this!!!

All good suggestions. Here's one more. One of my fave DVDs is "yoga for the rest of us." Designed mostly for older folks, I guess, but I found it useful. A lot of sitting stretches, followed by a few VERY simple, modified standing poses.

I agree with the water arobics. Less stress on the joints for now. I also recomend some small hand weights to get you started. You can do them anywhere. Even a soup can would work. Just start
