I nearly fell off the scale....

I went to see my PCP last week because I finally decided to go forward with Weight Loss Surgery. I've tried every diet imaginable - lose some weight and then regain it. Really tired of the diet treadmill, I gave up trying diets several months ago. Figured I had to go the surgery route. Went to orientation program, and set up appointment with the hospital's weight center. Had a scheduled PCP appointment. Hadn't seen him for about a year. He had been after me to go for the surgery. My SO is extremely opposed to the surgery and we've had several arguments over it. He has been telling me I look like I've lost weight and I told him no - I haven't been dieting.

So I'm at the doctor's office and they have me step on the scale, and since my last visit about a year ago I've lost 54 pounds! Needless to say, I was shocked. Well I've thought about it and realized that while I have not been "dieting" I have been "watching what I eat" .... no exercise and no diet program - just common sense. I've been watching my portions and trying to make sensible choices. I have had pizza, and Chinese food, etc. - but I've cut back on how often I have it and how much I have. I eat salads and use salad dressing, but don't use half a bottle of dressing. When I have dinner, I have one serving - not two. I bulk up my meals with veggies. No soda. Lots of water.

So guess what -- I'm not going to have the surgery. I'm going to continue doing what I've been doing. I didn't notice a weight loss but because I have so much weight to lose, it takes time before you start dropping sizes. I have not been stresing about points, or carbs, or anything else.

I'm glad I kept that PCP appointment - it opened my eyes. Diet no more - eat sensibly!!

You GO Mary! I am so proud of you for just doing it and making the right choices for yourself. I have had many, many surgeries that are life-saving and I have a sensitivity to anesthesia. No matter what anyone says, anesthesia for any reason is very tough on our bodies. You can do this!! Just keep doing what you're doing and don't give up! You go girl!

Way to go on your loss!! Common sense eating is the way to go!! My new doctor always pressure me on surgery and I proved her wrong, on losing weight on my own.. which she was shocked that am losing..Ha!

Keep up the good work!! YOU are doing awesome!!

Wow, nice nice surprise! And since you've been doing the sensible thing for a whole year, you already know you can keep it up. :-D Yay!

MAry - well done!!! It just goes to show that moderation in all things is a lifestyle!!!!!

I'm glad you made that choice, I personally think lifestyle change without the surgery is the peferable option. It's what I am trying to do this time around - not a DIET.

Congrats! What a feeling! I had considered the surgery as well, but after completing 6 months w/ a nutritionist I realized that my problem was "in my head" and I needed to work on that aspect of weight loss. I am an emotional eater.

Anyway, congrats and keep up the great work :)
