Oh wow. You're eating that??
Funny the things that pop into your head as you're reading old threads...
One of the more insulting things I've heard when I was out to dinner was "Oh, you're eating salad? Good for you." Okay, I almost always eat salad when I go out to dinner. It's either that or a chunk of meat with veggies as the side. Why is it so dumbfounding that fat people really do eat food that's good for them? Don't get me wrong, I often eat too much, and I'm far from perfect, but c'mon. Did I mention that it was an ex who made that comment? Maybe if he'd spent more time talking with me and less flirting with the waitresses, he might have noticed before then. What about you? |
I used to get "Is that seriously all you eat???" Like they expected I must be troughing down loads of stuff. But for me the story was not set in the here and now, it was set in the past. I'd blown up like a balloon for a while and then I was eating to maintain that new higher weight. If they'd seen me when I was eating like it was going out of fashion they'd have understood how I got there, but I wasn't continuing to pile it on. They couldn't grasp how I could be fat and not eat like someone in a media article called "they had to knock the walls down to save my life".

I had the opposite. My most mind boggling comment was when I walked into a meeting with my typical huge lunch salad (while everyone else was enjoying the BBQ take out lunch they brought in for the meeting which I declined to take part in) and someone had the nerve to say "Geez, you are going to eat all of that?!" Bear in mind, this was already after 125 or so pounds lost. I just looked at her and said "yep - seems to be working, doesn't it?" Then I took a huge mouthful and asked her how the potato salad was and commented on how many calories mayonnaise had. Yes, I sunk to her level with that one, but I was pissed!

I still can't quite figure out how I got to where I was eating basically what I eat now. :dunno: I did not have a crappy diet. I mean I did...I'd indulge in the office donut more than I would do now. I ate pizza, but my limit was two slices. From what I've read a lot of women my weight would down the entire pizza. I never did that. But I have always loved my veggies, I used healthy homemade olive oil dressing on my salads, never ordered cheese based sauces at restaurants and usually ordered fish or grilled chicken.
Yeah, fat people can eat healthy too. It's insulting when people think otherwise, huh? |

I also get snide comments when I read nutritional labels. People are like, "Why are you reading the nutritional info on M&Ms? What's the point? We all know they're unhealthy." Um, yeah, but I want to know what's going into my body, you know? |
Yes people watch what I eat TREMENDOUSLY now. If I decide to "cheat" (stupid word!) they are quick to point it out. If I decide to stay on plan they are quick to tell me HOW GOOD their chocolate cake is.
Whatever, Im awesome. |

:D Did I mention that he'd put on over 20 lbs in the 8 months that I'd known him...where as I'd dropped 30?
I almost want to see the useless lump again when I hit 170. Almost. |
