How
.. My
Phone died and posted this thread with the name how.. Joy. Anyway I've been looking around and couldn't find what I wanted to know so I'll ask in here. How much weight loss did it take before people noticed? I'm 55pounds down- 25kilos and pretty much no one is noticing- the very few who do think I've lost about 5kilos... It's upsetting me. I am quite big but I want to know how long it's going to tale before i notice a difference- and so does everyone else! Your personal stories are appreciated! Thanks!! |
Sweetie I'm in almost the exact same boat as you. I started at 330 and am down 55 pounds as of yesterday. I have one friend who always comments, but I think it's because she knows I'm losing weight because she is literally the ONLY person who has noticed anything. Even I barely see it, the only way I know is that I'm down a pant size, maybe two depending on the store (from a 24 to a 20). I have a feeling I'll need to lose another 20-30 before anyone notices.

I started at 326 and it took a good 40 lbs.

My former "work mom" noticed at 15 lbs. I love that lady :) Several pounds later, another gal was at her desk, and she waived me over...and had to tell me that Julie had just seen me and thought I looked great.
People notice and discuss with others long before they say anything. ;) Sometimes the person they're talking with simply chooses to out them before they say anything to you directly. |
I went from 287 to 237 and only one person noticed. The person who noticed only thought I'd lost 10 or so pounds. Geeeesh. If they only knew! LOL. I didn't say anything to correct her assumption.
Oh, and the only reason I think she said something is that I finally wore pants that were smaller. Hugs, Ratkity |
A friend at work noticed at 20 pounds down....
Almost 2 years later, someone at work --yesterday-- saw me in the breakroom where we walk on our breaks to a Walk Away the Pounds dvd--and said You are so dedicated, have you lost any weight yet? She seemed surprised when I told her I'd lost over 110 pounds. :o So, idk, people see what they want to see, I guess. However most people I see now say they don't recognize me. |

You are rocking to do that during your breaks!!! Hugs, Ratkity |
I'm not that far down and I was wondering the same thing. At 14 pounds down no one has noticed - not even me. :o :dizzy: But I was wondering at what point people would start to notice and then I remembered that I'm always hesitant to comment on someone else's weight or weight loss. To me weight is such an extremely personal thing that it just seems wrong to comment unless it's a really close friend.

Congrats on your loss and keep up the good work:carrot: |
I'm 40 lbs down and my dh, mom, and one brother have noticed. But I tend to lose a lot of weight in my face/neck/chest first...so it's noticeable.
|
I think it depends on the person on whether they notice or not. I have a friend who noticed when I lost my first 5 pounds. (But he's a very observant fellow)
I think a lot of the time people are afraid to say something. Afraid to insult you by asking or afraid of hurting your feelings by commenting or afraid of just being to nosy. :) I actually prefer for people not to say anything. I am a pretty private person when it comes to my weight issues with my IRL friends. I know they know I'm fat. And I know they know when I'm trying to lose weight. But I also don't want to talk to them about it. lol I guess until it's a huge, dramatic change in weight I just want it to be that little thing we don't talk about. |
I've lost 21Ibs and my colleagues and close friends have noticed, i figure people notice but are usually afraid to tell u, they'd rather discuss it among themselves and the close ones will mention it to you
|
I agree that some people may be afraid to say something but I also think sometimes people that see you EVERY day just may not notice. I wouldn't try to take it personally or let it bother you!
I've lost 92 lbs as of yesterday but most of my immediate family and all of my coworkers haven't seemed to notice or comment (which I actually prefer) but when I went to the doctor, a cousin's birthday party and to visit my godmother in the hospital, they all noticed the loss of poundage. |
I think it depends. Someone who sees you every day wont notice as much as someone you see every couple of weeks.

I know how you feel. It took a very long time for anyone to notice and then it was such a let down. My mother finally asked if I had been sick and had lost "some" weight. My husband has only commented once or twice that he has "noticed a loss" but hasn't shown any appreciation for it. No one else that I know has said a word, and I have lost 80 pounds! Even I can see the significant difference!
However, it took me a long time to see it. What has helped me see it is by taking lots of pictures in the mirror. I remember going crazy trying to see the loss, but couldn't and then one day, I was shocked to see it, then, over time, all the subtle little changes pop up. Like discovering I could feel a bone, or that I could reach further, or being aware that I no long knock things over with my butt, or I can walk farther than before, or I fit in an airplane seat. These types of awareness of weightloss seem to come in unexpected times, when I am not "trying" to see it in a mirror. I have avoided booths in restaurants for so long (we rarely go to these places) but I bet I can fit in one now! Cheer yourself and celebrate all the changes only you will know about! Others may not say anything (some are afraid to offend or don't want to get personal) but don't let it get to you. I really thought it would make a difference to my husband...but he doesn't even notice. That really disappointed me. |
