I Gained a Pound?!?!

  • Actually it was 1.2lbs. I know I probably shouldn't be weighing everyday but I can't seem to help myself. I've worked really hard to make my peace with the fact that the numbers may stall for a few days or only go down by a tenth or so per day but I could have just cried when I stepped on the scale this morning to see that I'd gained 1.2lbs.

I haven't done anything different. I've been eating right, calorie counting, carb counting, fat counting myself to death so how could I have gained weight. Sigh. I know I'm probably retaining water due to sodium or TOM but it's so frustrating to work so hard and see the numbers going in the wrong direction.
  • Don't let that 1 pound feel like 50. You're not a failure. Trust me, we've all been there. The best thing to do is just keep going. I know it's frustrating but you can do it, just hang in there!
  • Make it part of your making peace. It is a datum, a statistic. If you're doing everything right, you can't not lose weight. This too shall pass.
  • Yes, don't let 1 pound get you down! I know (I'd be the same way) it's hard but remember it could be water or defintely TOM. I know when my TOM is due I gain a good 5lbs! Then it's all gone by the end. I retain alot of fluid during it, its odd! LOL. Don't worry!! We all have those days.
  • DON'T worry about 1lb. If you have been on plan, it's most definitely water weight, do you really think your body is going to make a pound of fat over night?

This is usually why we always tell people to not weigh daily, it can be discouraging when you see such a dramatic fluctuation but know that this is completely normal - everyone here is going to tell you that.

The best thing you can do is record your weight every day but ONLY look at trends. If from Saturday to Saturday you are consistently going down then you are on the right track! Even then, I would give weight loss a good month before I give up in frustration. Trust me when I say that if you are following your plan, YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT. Always keep that in mind, even when things look a little grim, you are not outside the realm of the laws of thermodynamics. The body is a constantly evolving, moving, living thing and it's in the process of storing and burning fat simultaneously.

If you are committed, nature is GOING to take care of the rest.
  • Thank you so much ladies. I was just so...defeated...this morning. I know that what you are all saying is right. If I'm on plan then the weight loss will follow and that this is just a small hiccup in the process. I don't know why I let it bother me so much. I guess I'd understand if I'd gone off plan but I haven't and, believe me, I've wanted to a couple of times. Ugh!

Okay, so keep moving forward. Even if the number on the scales is up my body has to be healthier than it was.
  • Hang in there Sunshine! I gain 5lbs during TOM! It's frustrating but it's only one point in time. It will shift and change and that's ok! You are doing a fabulous job! Keep picturing that finish line!
