Hummus Help
Hi! I tried hummus recently and actually rather enjoyed it, but I'm not sure what all I can do with it! I just ate it with crackers, but if any of you have any recipes to share involving hummus, I'd appreciate it. Do you use it as a sandwich spread? Just a dip? I just have no clue what to do with the stuff! lol Thanks!

I just made some the other day and had it on cut up veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, cucumber). Sorry don't have any recipes to use it in. I think it would be good with pita chips too.

it's good if you take the whole wheat pocket bread (or pita bread..w/e) and get it crispy in the oven under the broiler then dip it in.
Also, (because I'm Greek) a lot of my meals consist of reduced-fat feta cheese blocks, 3 or 4 kalamata olives, and toasted pita bread with hummus. Makes a filling meal! (I think) Although, I'm not sure if I'm getting enough protein :) |
I love it as a dip for veggies, as a spread on sandwiches with tomatoes, red onions and very crisp greens. It's also good in salads. I make a great Greek salad with crisp creens, red onions, a few kalamata olives, a tiny bit of feta (Trader Joe's makes a great fat free feta) and a dollop of hummus. It acts like a dressing when I stir it really well (I got the idea from a salad I ordered at California Pizza Kitchen). I haven't done it in awhile, but I used to cut a whole wheat pita bread into quarters and then crisp it under the broiler - I love it with hummus.

Hummus makes a terrific sandwich spread and a great base. With hummus you can really eliminate the need for mayo or anything else fatty and blah. There are some delicious flavored hummus spreads...like with roasted red peppers, garlic and so forth. One serving is usually about 2 tbsp and goes a long way. It definately livens up veggies and is very versatile.

I love hummus! One way I enjoy it other than listed here, is I popped the yolks out of hardboiled eggs and fill the centers with hummus... YUM!
Here is my recipe hope you enjoy it. I've taken to not rinsing and draining then omitting the olive oil. When I'm short on time or want less calories. The best thing about hummus is that you can play around with it.:) The can: Chickpeas The plan: Hummus in a hurry Rinse and drain 1 can (16 oz) chickpeas. In food processor, ( Or blender, or submersion thingie ) combine with 3 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice, 2 Tbsp tahini, 1 Tbsp olive oil, 1 tsp bottled minced garlic, and 1/8 tsp crushed red pepper. Process until smooth. (8 servings, huge 1/4 cup serv.) Per Serving : 107 Calories; 4g Fat (35.6% calories from fat); 3g Protein; 14g Carbohydrate; 3g Dietary Fiber; 0mg Cholesterol; 174mg Sodium. Exchanges: 1 Grain(Starch); 0 Lean Meat; 0 Vegetable; 0 Fruit; 1 Fat. (( 2 pts )) |
I've noticed hummus being made with beans other than chickpeas...there's a restaurant in my area that makes White Bean Hummus (using cannelini beans) and a friend just gave me this great recipe for Black Bean Hummus. Not sure if these "others" actually qualify as hummus but they are delicious. Another good middle eastern spread/dip that's good (and healthy) is Baba Ganouj. It's made from roasted eggplant.
Here's the black bean recipe...enjoy: Paul’s Black Bean Hummus 1 can of black beans ¼ cup Tahini (sesame butter) ¼ cup lemon juice ¼ cup water 2 cloves garlic (minced) 3/4 tsp Chipotle powder (smoked Jalapeno) 1 tsp Ancho pepper powder (mild chili powder) ¾ tsp kosher salt Drain juice off of beans then dump all ingredients into blender and blend till smooth. You may have to add more water if mixture is too thick to blend, but add only a tsp at a time till it starts to mix nicely. It can become runny very quickly if you add too much. Great with blue chips, raw veggies or pita. |
The Syrians use fava beans in their hummus. My husband loves it on everything. Try putting some on top of a salmon fillet before putting it in the broiler.

on my favorite sandwiches is a hummus and taboule one.
Just spread a bit of each on a slice of bread and put it together....you can add lettuce and tomato and sprouts and olives etc etc. to make a really nice healthy lunch. Try Cedars Taboule it has a lot of parsley in it so if you dont really like it you might not like the taboule mix. |
