Dumb Question

Ok I know this is a dumb question but is it possible to be eating to few calories so you don't lose weight?

HeatherAngel 01-14-2008 06:37 PM

Yup. Absolutely. If you drop too low, your body will compensate. You MUST find the balance between too few and too many - trial and error.

BMR calorie calculators are a good place to start - find how many calories you need to eat just to breathe, and then take some off to accommodate weight loss... easier said than done!

Good luck!

Definitely....if you dont eat enough of calories your body holds onto the fat it has and basically wont let go because it thinks you are starving it(sorry one more year until im a nurse lol) But you are almost exactly like me and the advice I got from my doctor was to eat at least 1500-1700 calories a day and to exercise 5 times a week and the weight will drop off. So dont starve yourself but eat healthy. I started today and it wont be easy lol......but its doable!!!!!goodluck!!!!

Ok this all makes sense!! I have been eating 1250 calories a day for almost two weeks and as of today am only down 2 pounds. I was ready to scream!!!

This is what I've been doing since last summer - and I just wanted to say it works :)

I think the answer is pretty complex. At 1250 you probably aren't entering any kind of starvation mode or anything... but it's much too low for your weight -- it won't be easy to get in good nutrition for example. The more we weigh, the more calories we need to do everything! So 1250 might be a good number for some who weighs under 200 pounds, but you should be able to eat quite a bit more AND still lose at a steady pace,

And you will need to be patient, even if you up the calories (which would probably be a good idea at your weight). Weight loss isn't linear. You can do the same thing from week to week and lose sometimes, stay the same sometimes, or even gain. That's because the scale weighs all of us, and lots of us fluctuate, especially with regard to water weight.

So, don't starve yourself, be consistent, eat as healthy as you can, get in some exercise, and be patient!!! :D

Ambie, at our size we can eat a lot and still lose weight. 1250 is very, very low for someone starting out at over 300 lbs and at 5'9. It's not necessary to do that, and it could be counterproductive. Your body can go into starvation mode and hold on to the weight. Who wants to suffer on a small amount of calories and get very little results? Not only that, can you stick to 1250 calories for the amount of time it will take to lose all the weight? Most find it unsustainable. When you only have 10 or 20 lbs. to lose, it is do-able, but for the time it takes to lose large amounts of weight, it's much harder to stay with it going that low.

When I first started I was eating around 2300 calories a day. Then I dropped to 2000. I'm still losing weight, plus I have tons of energy and feel great.

From what I gather if you don’t eat the require amount of calories then your fat stores would be used for energy so you will not lose weight. It’s best to eat things like fruit and veggies a lot because they are good for you and will keep your energy levels ticking over while you still burn fat!

Yes it is possible! I have been reading alot lol and i think that is too low to start as well. I have been tracking my calories for about 2 weeks now..and I am at about 2000 calories..I just started this battle too! I also read in Jillian Michaels books to tweek it from day to day??? Don't know if its true but she said do a little variation..like 2000 for a few days..then 1900 for a few then back and forth..guess to keep the body from saying ok..you were giving me 2000 for months now we are at 1700 what is goign on? lol dont know if its true but sounds good. Our bodies are so picky LOl

Good luck!
