Are you "good" when you eat out?
When you get food from restaurants do you stick to your usual healthier eating habits or do you eat whatever you want?
I don't eat out often and see it as a treat, so I always want something tasty and try to compensate a little by having a healthy side or getting something grilled instead of deep fried. Then sometimes I'm just plain "bad", but I've never been just plain "good", and then I'm full...of regrets. |
This has always been a struggle for me and usually ends in me feeling like I've wrecked everything and derails my healthy habits. So I refuse to eat out. I always make sure I'm prepared with healthy meals/snacks packed whenever I'm out of the house for too long to make sure I can avoid temptation. Eating out is just BAD for me. Lol.
On the rare occasion I do have to eat out for whatever reason, my go-to meal is a salad with grilled chicken and no dressing. If I can't get a salad, I won't go to that restaurant. :) |
Depends on the place. If I've been there before I usually have a few safe items I can stick to..If its a new place I usually want to try something and I fall off the rails.

I pretty much always order whatever is the healthiest food item on the menu, and have for the past 20 years. I satisfy my want for certain flavor profiles at home. I usually don't like to eat out because I don't think the food tastes that great (because it's usually some kind of salad or grilled fish/chicken with vegetables on the side).
In college we were required to make a "bucket list" of things that we wanted to accomplish. One of my line items was to order what looks the best to me at a restaurant instead of what the healthiest thing was. |
Depends. For the most part as a rare treat, I'm gonna eat what I want. That being said my stomach doesn't tolerate a lot of things anymore.
Sometimes I'll order an app if it seems paleo or somewhat paleo. I don't do well with most starches. Otherwise, I'm likely to order steak and vegetables. Not terrible considering other options. Sometimes a salad with dressing on the side. More the reason is because I don't like the way they drench it. If I eat bread I try to stick to one piece or not even start. I never feel good after that. Dessert is a very rare treat that I share with husband and kiddo. Ones usually enough for the three of us. |
I try to make better choices. It's funny though, I've noticed over the years that I enjoy going out less and less, and I think it's because I start to think about how many calories are in this or that and it kind of ruins it for me. More often than not I stick with soup and salad. One thing I do love about this approach is now when I leave a restaurant I'm no longer "stuffed to the gills" miserably bloated.

I used to order exactly what my heart (or stomach) desired but I've gotten better. If I think about how I've eaten that last few days, I might go for a salad or fish with veggies. If I indulge in something heavier, I try to make the side something light. And then sometimes I just have the tastiest thing on the menu and don't worry about it. One thing I've found is that I can't eat as much anymore so it's not the same kind of damage as before.
I've also found I sometimes get the side eye from my friends who I used to overindulge with. One friend in particular seems bothered when I order healthy food or decline seconds. Oh well! I can't gorge myself to make you feel better! |
90% of the time, if I'm dining out its a special occasion and I'm not concerned with what I eat that night.
Life is too short not to have those moments where you just eat what you feel like eating and then move on. Moderation in all things. :) Occasionally if I'm going out for lunch or something to meet a friend, I'll make choices that fit in my calories and macros for the day. |
If I know what restaurant I'm going to, I check out their menu beforehand so I can figure out what I'm going to have and not have to take 15 minutes to order.
Also, I'm never afraid to ask for substitutions. Most places can be accommodating. |
i try to make the best choice i can wherever i am

I do check the calorie counts online wherever possible -- it's good both to check on my own guesses and to help me avoid the real surprises (like the 1200-calorie appetizer).....

I count calories and have for decades since I lost the original weight, but I've matured to a place where I don't think of eating as being "good" or "bad." I have high days and low days but I don't think of it in terms that connote morality or regret.
