It takes some experimenting but you eventually find the right fit for your lifestyle that gives you the results you want - with the kiddos it would probably be easiest to do something that has simple healthy eating and portion control without eliminating anything so they can see how you're eating too since you know they'll mimic mom 
I love running but it is a little hard on feet.
