All of my life (until this time). Dieting was always torture, because I felt ravenously hungry 24/7.
The only diet I was not hungry on, was low-carb, and I never stuck with that for more than three weeks or so, because "everyone knows it's unhealthy."
When my doctor recommended low-carb for me, I was so skeptical that it took me another year, and another doctor's recommendation (a doctor who with her husband each lost about 100 lbs on a modified Atkins), before I gave it a sincere shot.
For me, it's an amazing change. I can eat a lot more calories (about 300 to 500) to lose the same amount of weight as on high-carb foods. I do choose higher carb days, but have to remember the trade-offs (less food, more hunger, less energy, and if I really overdo it, flares of certain health issues).
You might find the book Volumetrics helpful, as well as some of the reduced carb or reduced grain plans or the "good carb" plans.
