First off, I want to say that I did notice that the boards go a bit 'dead' on the weekends & that I think that this weekend warrior thread is in definite need!

Secondly, I can assimilate with you about the weekend food-fun-fair :dizzy: We, meaning hubby & me, have recognized that we tend to go over-the-top on the weekends and have started to limit our takeouts to 1x instead of 2/3x. Would if you decided to make a (lower-fat) curry recipe at home together one night?? Could be fun! Especially with a little bit of wine thrown in?! Little changes make a big difference! If I can offer a miniscule bit of wisdom - don't deprive yourself of things you love - just change it up a bit, so that it's healthier for you & enjoy!!!! :goodluck:

Thanks Cher very good suugestions! I would love a curry recipe! We do make a Thai Green Curry at home which is sooooo good! But it has coconut milk and butter and oil. We cut it down a bit with light coconut milk, I can't believe its not butter and not too much oil...so I am not sure how "bad" it really is, plus we don't eat nan with it, just white rice. MMMM, I think we may have to make that again soon, lol!

How did you do this weekend?

Ok, so I did alright this weekend, I only gained back half a pound!! BUT I did it the wrong way. I mean, Friday was good, a couple light beers and a normal low cal dinner. Saturday though...didn't eat anything until around 2pm and then had a Reuben sandwich with fries (and lots of Russian dressing!). That filled me up so much it was all I ate all day and then I had some drinks saturday night. Sunday I ate pasta and a small sandwich (turkey on light whole wheat).

All things considered I ate terrible food and in an extremely unhealthy fashion, but fortunately it didn't screw up my progress too much. I am back to being healthy and exercising all week. I am hoping to get down atleast 2lbs this week! We shall see...

How did everyone else make out??

rileyozzy 08-10-2009 09:53 AM

Oh, I totally understand the Indian food obsession. We got take out this weekend and it was sooooooo good. I stuffed myself, but I let DH eat all of the leftovers. I usually would have stuffed myself the next day too. I do try to cook something Indian at least once a week, but nothing is as good as the take out. :T

Hi Ladies :D

I did okay this weekend, except for last night, we went out for pizza hut & I gained 2lbs. So today I'm back at the exercising (walked 2 miles in 45 mins) & drinking my water.

Harps... which recipe would you like??? (I can PM it to you if you want)
1. Curried butternut squash soup

2. Curried chicken with pineapple
(462 calories, 6.7 g fat = 12.7% cal from fat)
3. Indian-style red lentils with rice
(459 calories, 8.1 g fat = 16.3% cal from fat)
4. Grilled chicken breasts in mango-curry marinade
(263 calories, 2.6 fat = 9% cal from fat)
5. Malaysian chicken & sweet potato stew
(531 calories, 6.4 fat = 11% cal from fat)
6. Mulligatawny soup (Indian soup w. curried chicken, apples & rice)
(203 calories, 3.5 fat = 16% cal from fat)
7. Shrimp simmered in a curry-coconut broth
(393 calories, 7.4 fat = 17% cal from fat)
8. Tri-colored rotini w. currants & green peas
(326 calories, 4.4 fat = 12% cal from fat)
9. Tropical turkey salad

Harps, sorry if I'm late to the party -- I don't know how I missed this thread!

I was wondering what sort of pre-planning you do to prepare for the weekend. Do you have your meals planned out ahead of time, or are you finding yourself in the drive-thru lane because you don't have anything to prepare at home? Are you out and about and eating out because you let yourself get really hungry, or are you staying in and eating because you're bored and the food is close to hand?

I think that if you really want to get a handle on it, you need to identify where your determination is slipping.

I am usually pretty good on the weekends, and I attribute it to the following things:

1) I plan out my weekend meals just like I do my weekday meals. I have, on occasion, prepared them ahead of time like I do the lunches I take to work with me. This takes away the most dangerous excuse (to me, at least) which is "I don't know WHAT I want to eat..." Weekend dinners are on the week-ahead dinner schedule already, so hubby and I both know what we're in for every night.

2) I make sure to eat something for breakfast, even if I get up late. I'll make it something small if I'm eating breakfast close to the time when I know I'm eating lunchtime.

3) If I'm out doing errands I make sure to consider where I'm going to be when it's time for me to eat. If I go too long I get cranky, and that's when I make the worst decisions. I'll make sure to make time to go somewhere that I know I can get something healthy, or have time to go back to the house for lunch.

4) I've finally figured out my trigger zones in the house. If I'm just having a lazy day and lounging around with the dogs and the hubby, I get hungry and want to snack if I'm in the family room next to the kitchen. If I'm upstairs watching TV in the bedroom I'm like a whole different person. If the weather is nice I'll go out into the backyard with a book and a blanket and the dogs and lounge around out there. (Eventually the dogs stop licking my face and go about their business rolling around in the grass, sunning themselves like lizards, or sniffing everything they can find to sniff.)

5) So if I want to be lazy I can -- I just do it in a different room/area. But if I want to get something done, I've realized that if I keep my hands busy I don't get hungry. Whenever I find myself drifting over to the fridge I'll go upstairs, pop in a video, and fold some laundry or clean out my dresser drawers. Or I'll stay downstairs and vacuum or organize magazines. Even if I just do something for 20 minutes I find myself forgetting about whatever snack I was craving before.

So anyway, this was SOOOO long! But maybe there was something in there that will help you. I firmly believe that you only need to get ONE good day under your belt, and after that every day get a little easier.

:) Sorry for being so long winded!!

Don't worry about being so winded, the more advice the better!
Basically the weekends boil down to the fact that my husband eats pretty good all week too, or he cooks all week, so he likes to get takeout and delivery all weekend. We don't have much money, so we just stay home usually and eat comfort food.

We only have a one bedroom apartment, so as far as getting to a "safe spot" that can't really happen unless I actually leave the apartment, lol ;)
(thats a great suggestion though, and when we eventually get a house I will put it into practice)

My husband, he's just not anal about food. He has no need to be. He does find my distraction with it rather irritating. I don't blame him, he has never experienced someone who is neurotic about food. Its weird to him and fair enough...He doesn't think I am fat. So he really thinks I am a bit loopy. He just never gave food a second thought, never had to, never needed to, never wanted to...
So, its hard to pre-program our weekend food, but I will try. He and I don't have many pleasures or money so I don't want to take his take-out away from him. I just need to make better choices with the options I am given. Period. And that is definately do-able :)

I really like all of your suggestions, especially about keeping busy. I guess the husband and I just have major meltdowns on the weekend, lol! We are LAZY by nature, and we use Saturday and Sunday to be as lazy as possible (i.e. keeping your hands busy to distract yourself...maybe I should take up knitting!)

This weekend we are going to a Mets game. Its my husband's first ever baseball game (he's Australian) so you can bet its going to be Hot dogs and all kinds of crap! I just hope I can find something psuedo healthy to eat! :p

... could you bring some carrot sticks, an apple, flavored mini rice cakes, & a couple bottles of water?

I could definately try and sneak in some food, but I know stadiums don't allow you to bring water which is no biggie. The food may not work if they look through handbags or pat you down. This is New York afterall, they have lots of security at sporting events, lol!

I'll pack it. If I have to toss it no biggie, I'll figure something out ;)
