Question Sushi Help :)

Good morning! I'm new to these boards and would like to just say how wonderful you all are!

I'm hoping to get some advice regarding sushi. My husband and I are going out on Thursday evening and I'm trying to plan ahead. I *think* I have a pretty good idea about what to order, but I was wondering if anyone had any wisdom nuggets they could pass along regarding sushi...what you would order (calorie wise) and what you'd definitely stay away from. Thanks!

Julie

I don't know much about the calorie count, but if you plan on getting the kind with rice, it's best to get the brown rice. It comes with SO much rice, which is why sushi can be dangerous. Otherwise, it's super healthy! I think the ones with salmon and tuna have the most nutritional value and protien.

I would avoid the appetizers--dumplings, fried things and the tempura. I was also go easy on the soy to avoid the sodium. Yum! SUSHI!

Believe it or not, some new deal is using certain types of cheeses in sushi. I would avoid those too!

dont eat the rice at all!! just eat the fish (or sashami) and order like a seaweed salad. all the soups are going to be very high in sodium, as is of course, the soy sauce

Well I know cream cheese is sometimes used in sushi. I really like sushi rolls but I'm vegan so I eat veggie sushi rolls. Those are low calorie, not fried, etc and sometimes you can get them with brown rice.

I'm glad someone did a post about this, I love spicey salmon rolls but wonder about the nutrition. I hear what people say about all the rice, but if I have two rolls of it, it's only the rice covering the seaweed, doesn't seem like much.

I also love yam tempura and never really thought it was too unhealthy, but I guess it is deep fried yams :S

Good luck on your dinner!

I went out for sushi a few months ago and found this website helpful.

Avoid the rolls that have mayo or cream cheese. I think the best choice is sashimi (so yummy!).

Thanks for all the replies. I plan on taking some Braggs sauce to replace the soy sauce...it's much lower in sodium than the lite soy sauce and tastes just like it. I also thought about the rice...brown rice is a smart alternative. I'll check and see if they have it. Thanks again...I knew I could count on you guys!

I love the octopus, seafood and seaweed salads. They're all dressed with a similar dressing, a very light rice wine vinegar based dressing. Oh Gosh, now I'm craving.

I have sushi nearly once a week and there are definite pitfalls to avoid, mostly fried appetizers. Stay away from tempura anything, but not all dumplings are bad. Pan seared shrimp gyoza are about 50calories each and I splurge on a couple of those sometimes. The little shrimp shumai are 25calories each and that's not bad at all.

You can do a combination of both sushi and sashimi, that way you get some rice but more fish. White fish like white tuna, bass, snapper, etc have less calories than tuna/salmon/mackerel but the latter have more nutritional value.

Avoid the "specialty rolls" that come drizzled with sauces and stuffed with tempura flakes. Opt for hand rolls instead - I ask them to go easy on the rice for my beloved spicy salmon roll and they comply. My typical meal consists of a spicy hand roll, shumai appetizer, and 3-4 pieces of sushi. All in all I walk away with roughly 600-800 calories from dinner.

Oh man do I love sushi! We have a place in town that does 2 for 1 rolls during happy hour. I *DO* allow myself the jalapeno shooter (tempura fried jalapeno wrapped in tuna in a shot glass with a "special sauce" which to me tastes like a tempura sauce) but its just one piece of tempura, and I figure the hottness boosts the metabolism - right?
Anyway, I agree about the sashimi, same flavors as the rolls minus the rice...it's the fish we like most about the rolls anyway - right??
And thanks for that website - BIG HELP!! :-)

I did find it in a local health food store. I believe it's called wakame, and it comes frozen in 2 lb bags, already seasoned. Just thaw and eat, but you can't break off just what you want (unless you use a saw), because it's frozen solid.

I didn't buy any (frozen) because it was pretty expensive, something like $22 for a 2 lb bag (it is available cheaper online).

I do buy it off the health food store's salad bar somethines though ($6.99 per pound).
