Default checking in

hi all i've been away as i've been finishing my degree very very busy etc but its all done.

anyway needless to say i now have time to work on me problem is i'm going away in 2 weeks to live in a tent and work all summer. where the only food is burgers and chips (fries to our cross pond cousins).

i need food ideas. basically i needs to be healthy as possible. i needs to be able to keep for at least a few days without refridgeration. (no electrics) i have no microwave or kettle just 2 pots a frying pan.

i'm thinking bags of fruit apples and bananas i have the chance to go shopping perhaps once every 4 days. bags of potatos will keep.

breakfast is tea and cornflakes with soya milk as it keeps better out of the fridge than normal milk.

as for anything else i'm thinking pasta. although distinctly lacking veg. baring in mind the tent will get very very hot so stuff will spoil very quickly

Not sure if you like those, but maybe ...... granola bars, fruit bars, canned fruits, canned vegies, tuna is a can, vacuum sealed salads (if such exist, lol ?

That is quite of a challenge! Good luck with it! I'm sure you'll do great!

canned fruit and veg is an idea i guess as is canned stew and soup but the problem is the amount of sugar and salt and all sorts of other rubbish they put in with them

Hi!
Sounds like quite the challenge!
I understand from your post that you won't have any fridge, but you WILL have 2 pots, a frying pan, and cooking capability?
IF so, you have some great choices. My DH bicycled across Canada a couple of summers ago (the ultimate in no fridge!) and lived to tell the tale, and you will too!

You might want to bring a backpack dedicated to a kitchen pantry.
Spice and herb collection: chili powder, curry powder, italian seasoning mix, salt, pepper
Rice, pasta, couscous
Potatoes
Instant oatmeal
Tinned black beans, kidney beans
Tinned tomatoes (whole, diced, or ground aka "passata")
Pita bread, whole grain breads
Peanut butter, jam, marmalade
Texturized Vegetable Protein (dry soya, essentially, for protein)
Tinned Tuna, Tinned Salmon, Tinned Chicken
Salad dressings, fat-free and in spray-pump bottles
Fresh veg and fruit
Fresh meats if eaten that day
Eggs, if eaten pretty quickly
SMALL tetrapacks of milk (cow's or soya)
Tea (of course)
Some meal suggestions:

Instant Oatmeal (boiling water) and fresh fruit with milk
Tea, multigrain bread, marmalade or jam
Tea, multigrain bread, peanut butter
Eggs (egg white omelet, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs)
Tuna or Salmon or Chicken and rice with fresh veggies
Vegetarian Chili made with Texturized Vegetable Protein (aka TVP), tinned tomatoes, tinned beans, spices, served with or without rice
Pasta with tomato sauce, bulked up with mushrooms (you can even bring tinned mushrooms if you like!) and other fresh veggies
Pita with fresh veggies and black beans

Well, you get the idea. Just rinse the tinned stuff really really well to minimize the salt action, and get everything packed in water...And use fresh if possible (i.e. fresh tomatoes is ideal, but tinned ones will be just fine...)
I AM, of course, assuming that you have access to cooking, hence the two pots and frypan...

Well, location (UK) + outdoorsy stuff = a good, hot cuppa tea first thing in the morning, to get you on your way! My dad is from the UK, and this is exactly how every camping morning starts...AND tea with honey works just fine, whereas instant coffee isn't so nice...

I have an annoying habit of disappearing from here when things are going bad and then coming back for support when I'm making an effort again at being healthy. I hope I resist the urge to disappear once more.
