Default lunges = knee pain

Ive been doing lunges and Im starting to feel some knee pain. Ive had slight knee pain before and had x-rays done, which gave normal results. But still, I dont want to persist with something thats causing excess stress on my knee.

Whats as good as lunges and better on the knees? I weight 245 and Im 5,5 in height, so Im heavy and that does put stress on the body. Are there non-machine exercises that I can do at home? Thanks

Can you do your lunges in front of a mirror?

I'd bet dollars to donuts that, if you're getting knee pain on a normal knee doing lunges, your knee is pushing past your toe. Your knee should be above your ankle at the bottom of the lunge, not past it.

Try that before giving up on lunges!

I had the same problem before, and it was because my knees went to far away past my toes. Now it never hurts in my knees, since I started to look closer to how I did my lunges..
Good Luck!

I would definitely try what mandalinn suggested...chances are the form is not right. Also you can do modified lunges/squats. I have knee problem too and I do the modified version and it doesn't hurt. I also wear a knee brace to more support while exercising. I have the Transfirmer so I use that but if you have stairs at home they will work too. Just put one leg up and the other on the ground and try doing it that way. As my trainer explained it once - always keep your knees behind the toes, and for squats imagine you're trying to sit on an imaginary toilet
