Nuts are good for you, but of course you can get by without eating them. I love them too and overdo sometimes - I think a lot of us have these nut issues.
Just thought I'd offer a couple of ideas that (usually) work for me to be able to have them but not to excess.
I hardly ever eat nuts alone as a snack. On occasion I'll take some with me if I'll be away from home. I've got some 100 calorie snack packs that I use for that - no danger there if I've only got one. At home, I'll only eat nuts as part of something else - I like to put almonds or cashews in my stir fries, I love the pistachio, goat cheese and apricot salad, slivered almonds in my greek yogurt with agave nectar, or peanut butter on an apple, toast, or crackers.
Maybe this approach will help you with your portion control issues.
PS, I keep them in the freezer in my basement and only pull out what I need for my recipe.
