Default Grape Nuts, whaddya think?

I was just researching Grape Nuts Cereal. I may buy some when I go shopping this week. I love this cereal and I've got some interesting recipes I'd like to try that include it.

Ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT FLOUR, WHEAT FLOUR, MALTED BARLEY FLOUR, SALT, DRIED YEAST, SOY LECITHIN. VITAMINS AND MINERALS: REDUCED IRON, NIACINAMIDE, ZINC OXIDE (SOURCE OF ZINC), VITAMIN B6, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMIN MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN B12, VITAMIN D.

From the FAQ section, referencing cereal:
Cold - 30 grams/1 ounce/3/4 cup. Varieties with 3.0 - 4.9 grams are “good” sources of fiber. “High” fiber cereals have 5.0 grams of fiber or more per serving. Choose a cereal with enough fiber to be at least on the upper end of “good,” and make sure it has less than 8 grams of sugar per serving.

From the Kraft website, 1 serving is 7 grams fiber, 4 grams sugar, however that is for a 58 gram serving, 200 calories. So it looks like a 30 gram serving would just make the 3.0 gram cutoff for a good amount of fiber and is okay for sugar. Not sure about that second ingredient though "Wheat Flour". Does anyone eat this regularly? Any issues? Cereal ain't cheap, plus if I buy it, I will want to eat it, so thought I'd consult the chicks first.

I buy the Safeway brand. It is cheaper and I think it tastes better. I haven't had a problem eating it...but I don't eat it everyday. Maybe once a week or so. I put a little in my greek yogurt too.

I don't know the quantity for a serving - it's not given on the website, just the weight and I don't have a box to look at. But I was wondering this too. I also remember a serving was pretty small. But they do expand in milk!

I love Grape Nuts, too, but it's not SBD friendly for true purists. First of all, even though the first ingredient is "whole grain wheat flour", that doesn't mean that it's 100% whole grain. And wheat flour is just a fancy name for white flour with a little whole wheat mixed in.

A cereal that is very similar both in taste and texture to Grape Nuts are the Ezekiel 4:9 cereals. They're made from organic sprouted whole grain wheat, organic malted barley, organic golden flax seeds, organic whole grain barley, organic sprouted whole grain millet, organic sprouted whole grain lentils, organic sprouted whole soybeans, organic sprouted whole grain spelt, filtered water, and sea salt. It's great eaten either hot or cold, and is great sprinkled over yogurt, too. One serving is 1/2 cup, with 180 calories, 6 grams of fiber, and 0 sugars.

How many carbs are in a serving size of that cereal. My grape nuts says the following. Organic whole wheat flour, organic whole grain malted barley flour. Is that wheat and barley flour or white flour?

I can find the Ezekiel cereals in our local Giant grocery, and I think Wegman's has them, too. I know I've seen them in other stores, too.

Shy Moment, are you wanting to know how many carbs are in a serving of Ezekiel? There are 27 grams in a serving size, but remember, if you are following SBD, we don't count carbs.

Cottage, you are my Ezekiel BFF! I was thinking the exact same thing!

Schmoo, Cottage is, as always, right--Grape Nuts are a no-no, but I always thought it was because of the malted barley flour. Malting makes barley caramelize, leading to the creation of sugars. I'm almost 100% sure that it leads to the creation of maltose, the sugar Dr. A says is most dangerous for us (and the main sugar in beer).

I find the Ezekiel brand cereal to be exactly like grape nuts, only yummier, because it comes in flavors! The almond is really good and I adore the cinnamon raisin for a treat! I get mine in the Nature's Market section of Wegman's. I think I've also seen it in some other grocery stores.
