Default Happy Monday!

Morning, gang! Hope it was "okay" for me to start the new thread but the other one was showing the "burning file" emblem and since it was the start of the new month, I hoped it was appropriate. If it's not, someone please let me know.

My 12 week weight challenge started today. I've weighed in -- ugh -- a gain, of course, although not quite as bad as expected. A big glass of ice water is within easy reach. Not going to exercise today, though -- I'm allergic to something (maybe mold, due to all the rain we've been having!) and I'm so congested I'm having trouble breathing at all. Maybe tomorrow.

This week was my niece's graduation open house which was a big success. The rain that was forecast held off until well after the party was done. Over 150 friends, family, and ex-teachers dropped by -- and that was before her classmates started showing up! She was totally bowled over by the quilt I'd made her -- a complete surprise -- she cried and even I got a little misty-eyed.

This is the last week of classes, then I should have a week or so off before the captioning boot camp. I got a packet from my prospective employer, who is also the sponsor of the boot camp, with many pages of information. Entering the info into my computer is easy; absorbing the info so thoroughly that it will be automatic at 265 - 300 words per minute -- that's more difficult. I feel again like a little kid facing that piano and rebelliously muttering "I doan wanna practice!"

I'm actually looking forward to today -- got a call from my machine quilter telling me another quilt is ready for pick-up. This one is a VERY BRIGHT black & white "plaid" that will be the summer quilt for my bed. It will totally change the look of my room when it's out. I've got a pattern for a black/white/brights rooster pillow that I'm going to make to go along with it.

In the meantime, it's back to the dungeon (sewing room) for me! Hope everyone has a fabulous OP day!
Donna

Default COOL weather, here, but not bad!

Hubby and I had a work bee weekend at camp, cutting trees. 5 actually. They were 68' tall, so we got several 12' lengths, 8' lengths, then blocks for burning! We hauled the brush, (I DID) into piles for burning at a later time. 11 hours of work Sat. We got them all cut and taken care of, so Sun. was a gravy play day for me. I got my baby, COAL into a 2 horse trailer Sun. too. YIPPEE... he was hauled in a delux model, huge box stall with air ride cushion... SO this 2 horse must have seemed quite cramped for him. HE went in fine after about 15 min. of leading to and from it, and having my other gelding in there nickering to him gave him encouragement. ALL went fine and he stood there comfortably... I then went to a team penning practise in Chatam. About a little over an hour from here! My friend took her 2 horses in the pen with the cows, to introduce her 4 year old to the beasts. I might bring COAL to it next year, just for fun.... NOT this year, of coarse, as he is only 2. I don't even ride him yet.... Great eating weekend for me and stayed op all week long. GLAD of that, too. Drinking lots of water, keeping busy and eating well. I should have a good weigh in on Wed. ciao for now, kurly

HI

Before I forget: WELCOME CHUCHU! We're glad you found us. Good luck on your first week with WW.

The weather finally turned decent so I've be spending more time out of doors and less reading and posting. I had a busy weekend went to a dog show in the Thousand Islands, went birdwatching with some friends in Utica, worked in the garden and around the house and ATE CHOCOLATE and JUNK FOOD. I think I'm going to have to take any extra cash out of my wallet so I can't afford to buy goodies. This is getting ridiculous. Every day I start out fine then blow it!DAMN, DAMN, DAMN! I'm going out to the car right now and collecting the change in the ashtray and rolling it! I'm going to have to put stickers in the car and at my desk, They'll say: "You aren't hungry ... Find another way to appease the food devils!"

I did clean out my closet and dresser. The 26's are gone so I can't put on any more lbs. I put the 24's in the closet and the 22's are neatly folded and awaiting a thinner me.

I skimmed the posts. Let's all rededicate ourselves to our goals. Linda, I think I did read you had a loss again. HURRAY!

Yes, thanks j-ann. I lost what I'd gained the week before plus a wee bit more. Grand total of 26 pounds lost in nearly a year. I'm just grateful the scale has gone down instead of up in the past year. I don't want to sound like I'm bragging (what's to brag about when you weigh 274 lb?) but I just want to share with you all some of the positive things that losing 26 pounds has brought to me.
1. I can now work for long stretches of time in my garden and I'm not talking about just puttering. I'm talking about heavy, grunt work like moving rocks like I did this weekend. Yes, I still have to take breaks but not as frequently as last summer. ****, last summer I was lucky to last five minutes without pain.
2. I can tie my shoes.
3. I can cut my toenails.
4. I can climb two flights of stairs...slowly but without stopping and without thinking I'm going to die when I reach the top.
5. I can get out of a chair much easier.
6. The severe pain in my knees has gone.
7. The pain in my lower back has eased somewhat.
8. I can wear a bra without feeling like I'm strangling.
9. I can get out of the bathtub without thinking I'm going to need to have Peter call the fire dept.
10. I can lie on my back without feeling like I'm suffocating.
11. I can pick things up off the floor without having to spraddle my legs apart.
12. There's a little dent between my midriff bulge and my tummy where it used to just go out like a beachball. (hey it's not much but it's progress)
13. I have a more positive outlook on life.
14. I enjoy going out in public more.

Well, there are more but some are kinda personal.

It was a busy, busy weekend in the garden for me. I got all my containers and baskets planted up as well as my planters in the front of the house. I did a lot of hard labor yesterday and today raking dirt and setting flagstones into it to create a new patio area next to our pond/waterfall. My house is a dustbowl but I'm hoping to tackle it tomorrow.
Bunny - love those socks. WOW!! Dazzling.
Terry - sounds like you've been a busy outdoor gal too. If you're like me, you just have to set foot out the door and you find a gazillion things that need doing. I wish I could clone myself sometimes, just to get some help with the garden.
Donna, your quilts sound wonderful. You must be very talented.

I know, I said we didn't have to send personal messages, but I just couldn't resist. But, please remember. Nobody HAS to write personal responses to posts. You don't have to feel guilty if you just don't have the time or wherewithall to do so. Just keep posting so we know what you're all up to.

Hi, guys.

I've finished all the paperwork to see if we can qualify for assistance with the medical stuff that's upcoming. I pulled together my business records (quite a feat given than usually it involves an entire day sometime in January, much chocolate, and some wine), filled out applications, and spent today knitting while waiting on folks that I needed to speak with regarding the upcoming medical issues. I networked with a friend-of-a-friend and we have an appointment with a juvenile orthopedic specialist next month - one who understands that if we don't get assistance, we'll be on a make-payments basis for treatment. I'm almost hopeful.

Lunch today with a dear friend - it was a nice chance to decompress. I'd told her we had some medical stuff up and coming but kinda sorta blew it off when I saw her last. Today I shared the extent of my concerns and just what we're looking at here. It was a relief to have someone else to talk to for a bit.

The kids are still in Florida with their grandparents. I think we may not pick them up for another week or two. My folks are always loathe to return the girls and frankly I need the time right now to get my ducks in a row without worrying about how my vibes are affecting my daughter(s), ya know?

No exercise in weeks. I feel like crap because of it. The only thing getting a work out here is my fingers from all the knitting! The socks I'm working on now are just darling - socks are wonderful because I can knit them even as the temperatures really begin to heat up.

Ladynredd - Thanks for starting a new thread.

Kurlytopp -- Love the horse-y, cow-y stories! My husband and I always marvel at the farm animals that seem to dot the countryside near where we live. If we ever buy a home, I want goats.

J-ann -- Feels good to put aside a size, doesn't it? I'm still here in my 18/20s waiting on 16/18s - but I finally made a giant run to the Salvation Army with the last of my 22/24s. It was scary. They sat here in a pile mocking me for months and months before I did it.

Linda -- It's the "kinda personal" benefits to weight loss I'm enjoying the most right now. I swear, its like a second courtship! I thought I outgrew hickeys a decade ago - shows what I know!

Tomorrow is "step back and evaluate our finances" day. It's gonna rot. Funny, things seemed like they were looking up when we had nothing to spend the $ on - but now that there are giant bills looming it all seems more complicated.

Default 3 puppies so far, and it is 2:13 a.m.

She started just after midnite, with a fine pup, but oh, so loud... IT hasn't stopped crying yet, haha. Must have been a male as it took an hour for him to latch on to the nipple, before calming down somewhat. THE 2nd pup took to it like bees to bears.... as did the 3rd. NOT sure if I have 2 female and one male so far, as it is hard to tell when MOM is trying to clean them up... I will wait for a while before disturbing her too much. KOTI is doing well. NOT nervous at all and taking to motherhood like a trooper.. ALL sleeping here, but I am awaiting the others.... kurly

Default An OP Day!

Glad I'm able to sign on this morning -- we've been having so many thunderstorms that it's affecting how much time I spend online.

Stayed OP yesterday AND did my Firm workout for the first time. Wasn't able to do all of it -- had to just march in place for part of it as I was having trouble coordinating my arms and legs! Kind of surprised me as I used to do step aerobics and Jazzercize and never had a problem. I did not use weights; they advise you not to use them for the first few workouts; just to concentrate on form. Besides they haven't come yet. I've received notification they've been shipped, though, so I can make myself REALLY sore.

Anybody happen to catch Oprah yesterday? Dr. Phil was talking about how to stop negative self-talk. He talked about needing to check everything we say about ourselves and ask ourselves whether it's true, whether it gets us what we want, and whether it helps keep us healthy. If it doesn't pass muster, then we substitute a "3-A" message -- which stands for Authentically Accurate -- something. Anyway, it interested me enough I'm going to try to get his book, "Self Matters," from the library.

Anyway, here's my menu from yesterday:
breakfast:
1/4 canteloupe -- 1 pt.
tapioca (1 C. nonfat milk, 1/2 pkg. of eggbeaters) -- 4 pts.

lunch:
1 C. mixed greens
20 grapes -- 1 pt.
4 oz. chicken breast -- 4 pts.
1 T. chutney dressing -- 1 pt. (?)
1/4 C. carrots -- 1 pt.

snack:
Starbuck's mocha frappechino bar -- 3 pts.

dinner:
1/2 C. rice -- 2 pts.
shrimp/fish gumbo -- 6 pts. **
1 C. milk -- 2 pts.
4 graham crackers -- 4 pts.

TOTAL: 30 points

** The gumbo recipe is from my new lowfat cookbook from QVC, "Crazy Plates." Recipe said to use 1 lb. shrimp, but I used 1/2 lb. shrimp and 1/2 lb. haddock fillets which have been taking up space in my freezer forever and I haven't been motivated to use. Gumbo was very good in spite of the haddock. If anyone wants the recipe, speak up and I'll post it. I'm also not certain whether the nutritional info on the recipe included the rice (which was called for) or not. I played it safe and counted it separately.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well.

LindaBC - I read your list of some of the positive things you have gained from losing weight and it was a helpful reminder to me of why I am doing this. Thanks!

Sometimes I forget what the pay-offs are for losing weight when I am in the throes of trying to stick to my food plan, exercising when I may not want to be doing that, etc. These message boards provide such good support and caring, in addition to helpful tips on the actual "how-to's". I am glad all of you are here. Take care.

Today was more tiring than if I'd spent the whole day working in the garden. I had to make a business run to the Workers Comp. Board in Richmond (just south of Vancouver) so I thought I'd stop by my 88 year old aunt who lives in a seniors home in Vancouver. It took me 1-1/4 hr to get there and I had a 45 minute visit with her. She's deaf as a post so I'm hoarse now from shouting. She just keeps repeating the same old stories she's been telling for years and has had a few bad falls recently so I'm a bit concerned about her. Then I drove to the WCB and took care of business and then on to my other aunt & uncle's (who live in Richmond) and had lunch with them. A very nice visit. This aunt is 85 but is in pretty good health and is very active and chipper. It always makes me feel good to be with her as she is like a second Mom to me. Anyhow, another hour to drive home and then plopped down to watch Young & Restless. Makes me glad I have a dull life watching the dumb things those characters do...and get a load of the grandmas wearing hooker clothes!!! Get real, Nikki!
Yes, I did catch some of Dr. Phil yesterday and I'm trying to do that negative talk thing. Every time you have a negative thought about yourself, write it down and then write down what is really true. For example. If you tell yourself "God, I'm so STOOPID", write it down and then write "I'm really quite intelligent. I managed to pick up such and such very quickly when I was 10". If you tell yourself "I just have too many pounds to lose to even bother", write it down. Then write down the truth "Those pounds are just another challenge to conquer and I CAN do it if I persevere."
I'm trying to figure out what my points for lunch at my aunt's were. She served a minestrone soup and I had a hearty bowlful. Then I had three pieces of grilled cheese sandwich (buttered on outside liberally, of course) and three pieces of bacon, PLUS two little almond tarts for dessert. I'm going to count 5 points for the bread because they were small slices and multigrain. Then I'd better count 4 points for the cheese and 3 points for the bacon and about 6 points for the butter. The soup was probably about 3 points. Yikes! That's 21 points just for lunch and I haven't even counted the tarts yet! They must have been 2 points each at least. So 25 points. See what can happen when you let down your guard??!! We must be ever vigilant.
Now I will be stuck with just salad for dinner. Bummer.
Tomorrow I have a pot luck picnic to go to. MORE challenges to my will power. HELP!!

After a really stressful week, I hopped on the scale this morning more to "face the music" than anything else. I mean, I didn't eat over points really but I didn't exercise at all unless you count knitting while waiting for various appointments ... so I figured, ah, well - might as well get it over with.

THREE POUNDS DOWN -- who would have thought it??!!

So that means if I extra especially good this week I'll be back on to losing "virgin fat".

I'm knitting another pair of socks:

And all is right with the world.

Default Dr. PHIL;

This was the 2nd time this show has played, and it is very helpful to reaffirm the strategies... I bought his book on life strategies, and it is helpful as well. I use that in conjunction with the WEIGHT WATCHERS.. I am pleased to say I lost 3more pounds this week, so that is 7.8 so far since starting 2 weeks back. My husband started almost a month before me, as I was lagging in my efforts to start! HE couldn't find anything to wear last nite to graduation... everything was TOO BIG!!!! WOW, what a trooper he has been. HE was thrilled to see his progress. All the men at work are asking him how he did it, as it seemed to come off over nite.. and of coarse, it didn't! We all know how much effort goes into losing weight.. EVEN MEN. although to me it seems like over nite as well, looking at how great he looks!!!! AH, well, I can do it too. I am on my way, right? The pups are growing very quickly. WE had the vet check Thurs. and had their dew claws removed. All are doing fine, as well as Koti. What a great natural mom she is! BUFFY seems depressed, though. She isn't allowed in to see the pups in her den! POOR BABY... she does lie outside with vigilance, though, and protects the whole family from strangers... she will growl if people try to see the pups. Strangers, not family! CUTE or what? Anyway, I am sure she will be fine soon as the pups are running around and she can join in. CIAO for now.. keep up the good work... OP week, and shooting for an OP weekend, with grad party to go to this afternoon... I am sure there will be free foods there to munch on, as well as sensible food. THEY do weight watchers, too... YIPPEE. kurly

Linda: How did your potluck go? I've got one tomorrow night. I'm planning on taking the WW apple pie angel food recipe so there's something sweet there that I know the point count for. Will also eat a BIG bowl of vegie soup before leaving. It's a new quilt guild I've never visited before, which is always stressful for me -- I really don't like meeting strangers all that much. Think maybe that explains why I tend to be such a hermit? I've got a couple of items to take for show & tell ... I have a mental vision of me sitting there, clutching my "security blankets" ...

My food is going well ... bad cramps due to period, so I've only exercised once. Later today I'll try to walk at least a mile. The pain medication leaves me very "logy" and unmotivated but I know exercising will help me feel better psychologically.

Hope everyone's having a great weekend. I know we had sunshine yesterday!
