Substitute for sweets

The biggest struggle I have been having is my sweet tooth. I try really hard not to have sugar or junk food but lately I have been having cravings. I try not to buy any junk food when I go to the store which eliminates some of it but sometimes you just want that large brownie. One thing I have been taking an apple slicing it and sprinkling splenda and cinnamon over top. It works but I am wodering what other things people do?

Non-fat Fudgesicles...My favorite... or unsweetened applesauce with a little granola on top for crunch, or I buy some russell stover net carb candies...peanut butter cups and limit them to two a day, so I have to decide when I actually want them. Another thing I love is popcorn! I eat alot of that for snacks, and I experiment with spices on it....garlic powder and chili powder are two of my favorites. along with a little butter and no salt!

Maybe, if you just HAVE to have the brownie, you could buy a small one instead. But the apple treat sounds even better and healthier!

If I'm watching tv in the evening I always feel like I want to eat, so I keep frozen and fresh fruit around and usually go for that. Yes I do literally eat frozen fruit... frozen mixed berries etc in a bowl with a spoon. It's kind of like having a dessert but a lot healthier.

Frankly, the apple with cinnamon sounds a lot tastier and appetizing than the brownie. Especially if it can be heated in the oven and... yumm.

I too keep frozen berries (I'd kill for raspberries) under the hand for when I really crave a dessert, ice-dream, and the likes. I don't know if the fact that it's cold "tricks" my brain into thinking that, hey, it's like ice-cream after all, but it works, so I'm not complaining!

An apple dry-fried with a smidge of brown sugar and cinnamon is luvverly! :T You can also do the same with bananas - a baked banana is a favourite dessert with a blob of cool whip perhaps or something.

I make protein pumpkin bars (recipe in the recipe thread in LWL) which are AMAZING and satisfy the cake urge, but are really healthy.

A sliced orange mixed in with vanilla fat free yogurt with maybe some splenda and cinnamon sprinkled on top. I've also been mixing it with bananas. If that doesn't work I have some tea with honey:)

FF or Sugar Free Chocolate Pudding Snacks-

FF or Sugar Free Gelatin with FF whip cream-sometimes I slice up bannanas or strawberries and add them into the gelatin.

Plain yogurt (1/2 c), sliced strawberries (4-5) and sliced banana (1/2) and 1/4 cup granola. It is simply divine! And, you have enough left over for the same the next day!!! It also makes a great breakfast.

I LOVE carmel apples from walmart...they are already made and only 150 calories. I get the ones with nuts on them instead of sprinkles, because I want the little extra protein.

Mickey have you tried popcorn with parmesean cheese?

ValRock 09-28-2006 12:22 PM

Frozen Berries blended with OJ in the blender YUM
Cottage Cheese with Pineapple
SF fudgesicles
Apple with Peanut butter or baked with Cinnamon
Yogurt
Freeze dried fruit
SF Jello
SF Pudding made with skim milk
applesauce

This stuff sounds way yummier to me now a days than a cookie or brownie! I know that I'm making myself healthier by eating them instead of the other way around!

Yeah I have, and love that too!!!! I usually don't have it on hand, which is silly... I'm a "cheese-aholic"....could eat it ALL day! Hehehe

Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions. I am defiantly going to try some of them. To clarify about not having the brownie when I really want it the reason is because I was told by my doctor to cut out as much sugar as possible from my diet because I have high blood sugar. Otherwise I would take the suggestion of having one or half of one when I want it because I believe that you can’t deprive yourself when you are loosing weight otherwise you will just gain it all back.

Thanks again,
Lynn

I like a banana with a small amount of peanut butter.
Good Catanlope cause it can be REALLY sweet
Cinnamon Graham Crackers (buy the 100 calorie pack if you fear binging)

I know all about the sweet tooth and the only thing that works for me...are sweets. I buy a cadbury chocolate bar which breaks up into small squares. I allow myself to have 3 squares a day and I make sure my husband is aware of this limit I have set for myself. Having something sweet believe it or not curbs my craving completely.
