question..

The last few days i have had a very salty aftertaste in my mouth. No matter what I do it wont go away. Have any of you had this problem before? Is it because of too much sodium or something? Its driving me crazy!!

LockItUp 04-13-2006 12:28 PM

I've never really heard of that. Are you doing low carb? Are you eating an excess of sodium? How much water are you drinking? Are you brushing your teeth (haha, ok that one was just for fun).

I havent changed anything except cutting down my calories.. but i have been drinking alot more diet soda.. That has quite a bit of sodium in it. I dont really know.. And im drinking atleast 64oz of water a day.

LockItUp 04-13-2006 02:16 PM

It could be the soda. maybe your body is reacting to the aspartame. I know that some people's bodies do not like it, or they just have weird reactions (not serious or anything, just weird) to it. Unless you are drinking a ton, I doubt it's having a huge affect on your sodium intake. Doesn't it have under 100 mg's per serving? That's not really that much considering some meals have in excess of 1000 mg's. That could be the culprit though, the diet soda that is.

Like LockItUp said, it doesn't really have much sodium. FDA says the "average" person should have 2400 (or less)mg of sodium a day. A serving of soda typially only has something like 35-85 (depending on the soda), so unless you're literally drinking LOTS of soda, I wouldn't blame that sodium ;)

I know you said you've decreased calories--have you been eating more processed foods, though? Sometimes in "diet" foods, they add sodium to help make up or missing flavor from fat and sugar

No, i havent been eating more processed foods. Actually ive been eating alot more all natural stuff. I used to eat alot of processed foods until i realized how many calories were in there.

If you've been working out at a very high intensity, sometimes you can lose water faster than you lose electrolytes which can lead to excess sodium in the plasma. Maybe try drinking a little extra water for the next few days. It should help no matter the cause.

Just a thought, but could it possibly be a new vitamin or supplement your taking. certain one leave a bad after taste in my mouth.
