Any tips to cure soreness?

I worked out with my brother in law on Saturday and did weightlifting for the first time in months. We did back and biceps and then I took it upon myself to do some squats as well. Needless to say, I can hardly move. I walk like I have a huge stick stuck up my butt and I can hardly get myself up out of chairs! I took yesterday off as a rest day but I really would like to get back to the gym today.. I just can't move! Does anyone have any tips on anything I can do to help the soreness so I can get back to the gym ASAP?

I'm not a 20 something but I've got a couple if tips for you.
Ibuprophen is my friend :)
The strengthening of muscles is caused by microscopic tears. These tears heal bigger and stronger than before you worked out. You must take care of this healing process. Eat protein!
I'm not very scientific but, if it still hurts, I don't work it again, yet
Could you do upper body today or lighter cardio like walking?

Tiger Balm! I love the stuff - I use the red strength, put it on before I go to bed, and feel WAY better in the morning.

Thank you! SusanB, I think I may just go to the gym tonight and do some light cardio as you suggested. Better than not going at all, right? ;)

sierra_ttw - What is Tiger Balm? And where can I get it?

Thanks girls!

I find that doing cardio does help with soreness. It gets those muscles warm and loosens them up. You'll feel better soon!

a nice warm bath with epsom salts is my favorite.

I want to know how Nevaeh made out last night. Did the cardio help?

Nevaeh - Tiger Balm has menthol and camphor in it - the menthol has anisthetic properties, and soothes. Camphor causes heat, so it increases blood flow to the areas that are sore, which numbs the pain, and increased circulationhelps promote healing in torn muscles. It's best to put on before you go to bed - but be sure to wear pj's, 'cause it smells really strong (I like the smell) and can get all over the sheets. And keep your fingers away from your eyes after putting it on! I buy mine in the local grocery store - depending on where you live, you might be able to find it in a health food store, or definitely in Chinese stores. This stuff is truly amazing.

For me, the thing that cures soreness is exercise. You "work it out" Cardio is excellent for loosening sore muscles. I am in the same boat as you today.. its so funny to go to pee cuz I have to like FALL on the toilet..:lol3:

I agree with sierra_ttw -- tiger balm it works but it's stinky!

Thank you so much for all of your suggestions, girls! :)

SusanB, I did end up going to the gym last night and I managed to do my usual workout on the ellipical for 40 minutes. I felt fine while I was actually on the machine, but definitely still had trouble walking when I got off! However this morning when I woke up I felt a lot better than yesterday. Usually I am extremely sore for a couple days, so I do think the cardio helped! Thank you!

sierra_ttw - Thank you I am definitely going to take you up on that and look for it!
