Ok - I am jumping back on the calorie counting band-wagon (ya, fitday) and I am interested in how many calories you all are taking in. Also, if you would like to add some height/weight info I would be interested to consider that, too.
I am planning on starting out at 1500 calories, right now I am 197 and 5'7".
My main concern is that I am not going to be able to maintain 1500 cal. Right now I think I must take in about 4000 cal a day, but I really have no idea.
Im 5'5, 149 pounds and I like to stay between 1200-1400 (today I majorly flubbed and got up to 1650, but a high day once in awhile is no biggie) when I first started I was 168 and taking in 1600 cals a day and losing verrrrrrrrrry slowly until I reduced my cals to 1400
At the current rate I usually lose, 1- 1.5 pounds a week.
How many calories you can take in and still lose weight is hit and miss for a lot of us. It also varies widely because amount of body fat and fitness levels also affect the amount we can eat and still lose weight.
There are some online counters that are really off the wall, but Hussman has one that is in my opinion, more accurate than most. Click here to his main page, and then click on BMR calculator and fill in the blanks on the pop up page. I'd start there, and tweak where necessary. http://www.hussman.org/fitness/
I sit around 2000-2200 a day( mypyramid.gov)...which usually I have to force down my throat. I work out 2 hours a day 6 days a week so I have to eat atleast that much to lose the weight. I have found on the weeks that I eat more 2400 calories a day I lose more weight...go figure.
I eat about 1500 calories a day (give or take) and try to walk for at least a half hour a day and can lose 1lb per week. I am 5'3" and currently 151lbs.
I would like to decrease my calorie intake by 100-200 calories a day, but I feel hungary a lot of the time at 1500, so I think I will wait for my body to adjust to my new lifestyle. I have already gone from over 2000 calories a day to where I am now in the past 4 weeks.

I am 221, 5'5"... I eat between 1300 and 1500 calories a day, give or take. I try to keep my fat ratio around 25-30% of total calories, protein around 45-50%, and carbs around 20-25%. I have lost 4 pounds my first week. I am sure it will slow, but I am prepared to be in this for the long haul. I rarely feel hungry because I cut out ALL sugar and starchy carbs. All of my calories come from lean meats, tons of veggies and fruits, and healthy fats. I have NO cravings.
Over the past month I've been averaging a loss of 0.5 lb/week. I've been eating an average of 1800 calories/day and exercising an average of 35 minutes a day (mostly fast walking and bike riding, with some running and weight lifting thrown in).
wow - ive been reading that hassman link you sent Jennifer, and I guess I think i need to get on the body for life plan and start the 6 meals a day. It sux, cause I usually like to have one biggish meal (Afternoon now) and 2 or 3 smaller ones, but it looks like I will have to curb this and split the bigger meal in two. urg! but i understand the logic in it, and if I want my december goal to come true, then I will have to really work for it I can tell!
btw, lately I have been trying to stay below 1500 - but I have not been counting cals very well - as in, I plan my meals out, healthily, but not sure what the count is. for example today I had about 1200 (1180) cals and 15 grams of fat. I'm 5'6 and excersized for an hour today, and wasnt too hungry today I suspect because of the hotdog I had last night
I am 5'4 and 212 as of my last weigh in. I started off eating between 1200-1500 calories a day and I lost NO weight. Then I was doing about 30-45 minutes of cardio 3-4 days a week.
I upped my calorie intake to 1500-1800 per day and I started losing weight more quickly. I also upped my cardio to 5-6 days per week along with 5-6 per week strength training.
I'm not sure if changing exactly how many calories I was eating helped, because I have made other changes as well like eating more vegetables, less processed foods and eating very little at night.
i am 25, 5'6", 167 pounds and getting 2000-2200 cals per day. i am also nursing a 4 month old baby which burns about 500 calories a day. so without that it would be 1500-1700. I have lost a pound a week for about 3 months now.
I have always gotten too hungry and crabby if I dip below 1500 calories per day. I don't think that is enough for my body type even though it is enough based on height and weight.
One way to figure calories is check out the new food pyramid...there is a tool that will tell you according to your height, weight, and activity level what you should be at calorie wise....check it out...
I'm 5'4", 144 lbs, and I think that I lose weight best if I eat about 1400 cals/day. The past couple days I had trouble eating that much and was more like 1200, but I think that is because I didn't exercise. When I'm working out every day during the week (last week was vacation) it is easy for me to eat 1400 cals or a little more, but if I don't work out I have trouble forcing down 1200 (without eating junk, that is).
The BMR calculator posted above said my BMR was like 1400-1500 calories, so I guess that is about right, although I totally guessed on my body fat percentage because I have no idea what it is, so I'm sure that throws it off. Mypyramid.gov gave me a 2200 cal plan, so if I eat 1400 I ought to be losing a pound a week.
Anyway, different amounts work for different people. I think 1400 is ideal for me right now, so we'll see. I would LOVE to hit my goal weight by the end of the year, but I know it will just get harder and harder as I get closer to it!
