How often do you weigh in?

I'm just curious.

I used to be ridiculously obsessiveness with weighing in and would weigh in multiple times a day. And by multiple, I mean I would weigh in every time I went to the bathroom or could see the scale. It was bad news bears.

For the last month or so I've been trying to weigh in weekly.

Now, I'm contemplating weighing in monthly because I want to focus on the lifestyle, not the number.

So....how often do you weigh in and why?

Thedollylala 09-05-2012 08:11 AM

I weigh myself twice a day, once in morning once at night, I count the ones in the morning

Dreamer2012 09-05-2012 08:33 AM

I was always very obsessed with the number on the scales that it got pretty bad. When I started wanting to loss weight in June, I would weigh in daily and sometimes it would be twice or three times a day. It was very disheartening when I didn't see a loss from day to day. I now know that weigh loss can be a slow and long journey but you will achieve your goals if you try your best. Now I have one official weigh in on Thursday (this is because challenges I'm involved in). I will sometimes check on a Tuesday morning to see how I'm doing.

princesshiccup 09-05-2012 09:03 AM

I try to only weigh myself in the mornings every other day. Sometimes it can be a challenge because I just want to know if there is any progress but if I wait I can generally count on a little bit of progress every other weigh in. I think seeing the number drop encourages me to keep going so I like to keep current with it!

stimkovs 09-05-2012 09:13 AM

hey- i weigh myself everyday (twice- morning and night) but i only count monday morning weigh ins. if i know i've gained (any day then monday morning) i will skip a weigh in, so as not to set off a binge.

i think since i don't count calories and eat intuitively, this keeps in reigned in.

krampus 09-05-2012 09:40 AM

Every morning like clockwork. I think half the reason I go to the gym every morning is to see a lower weigh-in. It's sick, but it gets me moving!

leighish 09-05-2012 09:42 AM

I weigh every morning while I'm counting. If I stop counting, I stop weighing, and that eventually leads to disaster. Having said that, I'll only update my tickers or my MFP maybe once a week.

Mer du Japon 09-05-2012 10:11 AM

Every morning. It keeps me accountable. If I eat a fat salty meal the day before, I will see the number go up on the scale for a couple of days-it serves as a reminder what sodium and garbage can do to my body.

Everlasting 09-05-2012 10:13 AM

I am weighing in every morning. It helps keep me motivated.

MaddieBPhoto 09-05-2012 10:15 AM

I'm an obsessive weigher - I weigh in the morning & at night. I need to stop - it's not helpful mentally. I used to not ever weigh myself, like didn't have a scale & didn't want to know, but that's not ok. That's how I got well over 200lbs. Once a day is plenty really. Even if I'm not on my diet/exercise plan, I weigh now. I weighed everyday while I was pregnant too. I didn't want to regain the 60lbs I lost just because I was pregnant.

Orr123 09-05-2012 10:58 AM

I'm quite the opposite of all you ladies.

I only weigh once a week, and that's only if I'm on an active weight loss plan.

If I am not on a weight loss plan, then I just don't weigh myself at all.

I find looking every day just makes me frustrated and then I give up. If I just do it once a week, or even less, I see a difference and its much more encouraging. Especially since I work shift work my mornings are not ALWAYS everyone elses mornings. So I always have mondays off, so Monday's I use as weighing in.

gatorgirl6 09-05-2012 10:58 AM

This truly depends on the person. I weigh in every morning, but I don't get obsessive over it and if I see a gain it doesn't (usually) make me binge. I just need to know that I have my brain in weight loss mode every day and for me that starts with weighing in.

ImGoinDown 09-05-2012 11:04 AM

I weigh every day in the morning. It helps keep me on track. Even when I do fall off the wagon, it keeps me from falling off for too long.

Atarimae 09-05-2012 01:04 PM

I weigh myself at least once a day. I told myself I'd stop doing that this time around, but I'm kind of obsessed with doing so. :/ I probably won't weigh on the weekends, if I'm at my mom's house though...I hate switching between scales!

Of course...I could always bring the one that's here...*coughs*

Candeka 09-05-2012 01:12 PM

Sometimes every morning, sometimes every other morning.

Vincentius 09-05-2012 02:03 PM

Every morning for me as well, though i Log my weight every week.

Katbot24 09-05-2012 02:11 PM

Every day, multiple times a day. But I only log in the morning.

It's obsessive I know but I only have two modes - obsessed or indifferent. Right now I'm indulging the obsessive me because she's working towards the same goal as i am.

GardenBurglar 09-05-2012 02:19 PM

I weigh myself in the morning most days, but not everyday. If I'm feeling bloated or had a higher calorie day the day before or even sometimes when I lifting really intensely the day before I don't weigh in to spare myself the unnecessary grief of a potential water weight gain. I also only weigh in once or twice during TOM for similar reasons.

Dottington 09-05-2012 03:10 PM

I was weighing wayyy too often. It used to just be once per day but had recently escalated to 3-5x per day, so now I'm trying for just once per week. Weighing everyday was making me crazy and obsessed. I felt like a failure if the number wasn't lower each day.

LeilaJey 09-05-2012 04:29 PM

Every morning I record my weight but I'm totally guilty of hopping on during the day when I see my scale.. I don't however get upset by the numbers I'm just curious. If I've drank a lot of water/just eaten I think it's interesting.

thewalrus0 09-05-2012 04:34 PM

I am about the same as GardenBurglar.

I try to avoid weighing on days I'm pretty sure it'll be bad, or else if I'm feeling good already about the number from the day before I'll avoid the scale for a day.

Weighing a couple times a week seems to work best to keep be focused but not obsessed, and at my weight often gives me little burts of motivation throughout the week, with a half lb down here and there every few days.

VYork88 09-05-2012 06:08 PM

It used to be once a week or month for me. But, that lead to me eating whatever I wanted and gaining, and then being soooo upset at the end of the week or month that I would just give up.

So, I started weighing myself everyday. That way I can tell if my food choices (which I track on MFP) are making me gain weight. I celebrate if one day I weigh 218.8 and the next 218.5. It has really helped me keep on track and that was my big downfall before.

I started in July at 251 and am now 218, so it's what works for me. I guess it depends on the person and their will power. For me, I had little will power until I started weighing daily.

TripSwitch 09-05-2012 11:04 PM

I've finally changed my thinking about weighing in all the time... It happened by checking in to a medically supervised program at a spa back in July for a much needed "vacation" from not only the scale, but from myself as well...

They weighed you once when you arrived, and that was it... No more scale for you... Just nice, simple nutritious meals, exercise, and a lot of soul searching... And it WORKED!

Now when I hop on the scale, I don't let a number ruin my whole day... Because a number can't ruin my day... A number can't defeat me... Only I CAN DO THAT.... So I don't let a number tell me what to do anymore, whether it's up or down... I know what to do... And nowadays, I'm finally starting to give myself more credit for that than I used too, thank God!

But hey... That's just me...

seeingfree 09-05-2012 11:57 PM

I guess compared to the majority I'm obsessive but weighing in multiple times a day really helps me keep my eating in check- especially when trying to avoid a binge! If I'm wearing a sweatshirt or jeans (anything "bulky") I'll take it off, just to make the number as low as possible :P I know it's probably not good psychologically but I'm scared not to weigh myself and then get complacent....

energie 09-06-2012 12:31 AM

Once every few days.

Melissa Dawn 09-06-2012 12:38 AM

I weigh in a couple times a week at the most. I keep my scale in a pain in the butt place so it's more work to get it out compared to keeping it out in plain sight there I can hop on it all the time.

mamamiaa 09-06-2012 06:22 AM

Every morning, unless I forget and then I wait till the next day. I don't want to weigh in after eating- lol

I'm like you.

I actually don't even own a scale. So I end up checking when I'm at my parents or bf's or whatever.

For me, I just find I fluctuate quite alot depending on the day and what I have to do for work. So for me to stress about my weight constantly isn't healthy for me. If I just weigh once in a while, then I feel better. Plus I know when I've gained weight. If my pants are tighter, I have got to be better!

SoMuchFattitude 09-06-2012 07:32 AM

SacredKestrel I feel like this is where I'm at. I make good food choices, exercise 6 days a week and make good choices in general. I find the scale defeating and need to focus on the lifestyle, not the number. The number is becoming a distraction.

Isn't it awesome...? Oh, and by the way, what you're doing sounds great! Way to go...!

Very cool... I'm not sure I could ever get to a place where I don't even own a scale, but thankfully today I can at least "imagine" that possibility... and I can so relate... I've finally discovered that weighing myself constantly isn't healthy for me, too... I've finally realized that I've got enough pressure and stress in my life already... So why add to it... By doing something that I know just stresses me out.... Don't get me wrong, I still keep track of my weight, maybe even to the point that might appear to some as obsessively so... But now that number on the scale isn't my number one, be all, end all goal goal anymore... It's just one piece of the puzzle... and that's what's working for me these days....

For me, I was always worrying about a number. I look about 40lbs lighter than I am, so the scale was causing me to be unhealthy. So I got to a point that the number didn't matter and getting a scale wasn't really worth it.

I think its great to keep track of things, but remember that everyones number is different. Go by how you feel, and don't let a silly number on a scale change how you feel you are doing. So for me, looking down and seeing a 180-190lbs number just made me feel crappy. When most girls my age/height are all like 120-140. So I just felt bad about myself. Until I got sick and actually got down to 130-140 and looked anorexic, I realized I need to stop caring about a number and go on feeling and fit of clothes and how I look in a mirror. Because weight is just a number and everyone's number will vary even.

That said, I need to exercise and keep healthy and lose some weight (or inches).

slicedbreadbox 09-08-2012 02:50 PM

I weigh myself twice a week. Mondays and Thursday. I do it as soon as I'm up and ready, before I've eaten anything. It helps keep me on track since I can't wait a full week. Once a day is too much for me. My weight can really fluctuate day to day and I don't want to see that because it's too disheartening for me.

Plus I like to see "more action" on my scale. If it's a loss like 0.1 day to day, I would probably find that disheartening too.

pinksparkles 09-08-2012 11:17 PM

I tried a daily weigh-in challenge here on 3FC for July, and I found it did more harm than good. Even having been at this for over a year, I still put a lot of value on the number on the scale.. so seeing no change (or worse- a gain!) after a good workout/eating day was super disheartening, and made me question staying OP.

I know it's all psychological, and any gains would be just water.. but it still gets me down.

So, now I weigh every Monday morning. I exercise Monday-Saturday and take Sunday as a day of rest. This seems to be what works best for me!

IsabellaOlivia 09-09-2012 09:17 PM

I weigh once a week. On Wednesday mornings. Frankly I don't see the point in weighing every day because the scale doesn't really change that much in 24 hours. And I also imagine that one meal high is salt or a tough workout that can cause water retention might affect the scale falsely. Once a week appears more accurate.

Pink Hurricane 09-09-2012 09:30 PM

Usually every morning, just to keep on track, but I don't fret if I miss a few days. I have the 'major' weigh in once a week (usually Fridays) in which I record my weight.

coolacrity 09-10-2012 08:02 PM

Multiple times a day. I used to only do it once a day (mornings), but then I started wanting to monitor myself over the day, make sure I'm doing the right thing. ("Uh oh, I've gained this much over the course of the day, I shouldn't have that" or "I've been good today, maybe I can just walk one mile not two".) Probably not the best thing to do, but I want to run a tight ship.
