Don't be too hard on yourself! As the others have said, sometimes we will run into some "surprises" like this one--but that's all part of the learning process. Moving forward, just try to portion out your peanuts in advance to avoid mindless munching.
I've also switched to eating pistachios, as you can eat more of them for fewer calories (49 pistachios would be the caloric equivalent of eating 24 almonds). If you really just feel like having something crunchy that you can eat a lot of without using up too many calories, you can also try low-fat popcorn!
