  • Hi 20-somethings - if you're not shy, please share any and all experience you may have with Brazilian waxes! I have 2 days to decide whether to buy a $30 LivingSocial coupon for one.

I've never had a Brazilian wax, but I am curious. I shave everything off pretty much every other day of the week, sometimes more, and it never gets *that* close to the skin and I sometimes cut myself.

My pain tolerance is high so I'm not worried about that. I'm more concerned about how long you have to grow it before the waxer can really rip it all out. I'd feel bad for subjecting my bf to a mess for two weeks or a month precluding the wax.

FWIW I think I'm pretty "normal" down there, it stays within the "sidelines" pretty much and grows in straight with a couple kinks.
  • Wooooo let's get personal. LOL

Okay I had it done a few times, especially before vacations and special occasions. About the pain, I know you said you can tolerate it, but just in case, It's bad, but it's not THAT bad. Some parts hurt a lot whereas some don't at all. If the girl doing it is good, you will barely feel a thing!

You need to have it about 3/4 inch for it to catch on better, but a good specialist wont have a problem if its a bit shorter.

You can always call the salon and ask them, they can tell you exactly how much they prefer for it to be at.

As for your boyfriend, the following few weeks after the wax will make ANY "suffering" toooooootally worth it!! HAhahahaa That's how my boyfriend saw it. And he also said that men don't really care about what it looks like if ya know what i mean hahahhahaa

Honestly, I would say go for it. The hair takes forever to grow back, and when it does it's not as coarse as it is when you shave!!

    I hope I helped lol.
  • I'm sorry it was NOT worth it to me. I bled A LOT And it hurt A LOT So bad in some areas that they couldn't remove anymore hair from there. ( NO it wasn't around my TOM)
I did it as a SURPRISE for hubby when he came home from Afghanistan for leave and it started getting stubbly a little over a week later. SO I just went back to shaving.

The place I went to and the lady that did it came highly recommended to me from a number of people I knew.. but it just wasn't right for me.

I also got a sugar wax? SO I don't know if that makes a difference.
  • I have been getting Brazilian waxes for almost two years now, and I loooove the results!

I usually get my waxing every 4 weeks, and is not as long as 3/4 of an inch, but the lady can do it without any problem. The hot wax they generally use can get hold of very tiny hairs :3

Even when the hair is growing back, the skin is smooth and it's not a mess, at least in my experience.

I would say go for it!

Jonsgurl0531 IT actually hurt lots for me the first time. I cursed lots at the *******ed idea that my boyfriend had at me getting a Brazilian wax :P But second time it was okay and didn't hurt more than other parts of the body (I get some variations in pain tolerance if I am on TOM or the hair is longer).

No idea about whether the sugar waxing makes a difference, though.

I could deal with the pain if it meant that I would be nice and smooth and even.. problem is that she wouldn't continue to wax in those places cause of the blood... Kinda upsetting when you spend a whole bunch of money to just have to go home.. be super sore and shave the patchy areas.

Its great that yours lasts so long. Like I said mine grew in really fast.

I knew the first time would be the worst.. but for the price/pain/and how long it lasted it just wasn't worth me going and trying again.

What kind of wax do you get? I wonder if it would have been different if they used something else.
  • I go once every 4 weeks...The regrowth kind of starts after a week for me, but it is soft and fine, so isn't a problem. I do find if I leave it longer than the 4 weeks, it starts to feel a bit untidy, lol. I don't have a problem with the pain, the more often you go the less it hurts. Someone recommended I take an ibuprofen 30 minutes before my first time...not sure if it helped or not, but it's never been an unbearable pain for me.
  • I love brazilians - and my DH does too. $30 is a great price! I'd snap that up in a heartbeat. I was advised to not shave for 2 weeks prior to my first wax, but after consecutive ones I've noticed that the hair growth is significantly finer overall. Regrowth from shaving drives me bonkers - I have no idea how you shave that often, I'd get all bumpy and start bleeding if I did that!
  • Some input from me : I havent done it, but my sister does regularly and after last time she went to her OB GYN and upon looking at her, he was shocked that she went through some kind of trauma. He thought she was abused, until she told him she had just had a wax. So , it does hurt and it doesnt look pretty for a little while,
  • I used to wax my legs and bikini line regularly but I never did a brazilian. Like you, I just shave it frequently.

(side note to Bobbles...at first the skin was irritated but after only a few weeks of shaving regularly I NEVER get any irritation there anymore and I've been doing it for a decade now...the skin truly does adapt)

Anyway I waxed for like two years under the misguided notion that my hair would continue to come in lighter and finer. It only FEELS finer because the hair is growing back in tapered rather than blunt from a razor. Not to mention that all the hairs don't grow back at the same rate.

So after two years I was kind of like "Why I am I spending so much money and enduring pain when I could buy a cheapo disposable razor and not have to have unsightly, hairy periods before my next wax?!?!? So I've never gone back.

All that said, my asian friends seem to have hair that grows back super slow in comparison to me. If that is you, than maybe it will be worth it to you. Might as well try it since it is so cheap.
  • Absolutely buy the coupon, as $30 is insanely cheap in my experience.

The pain isn't bad at all except the strip they'll pull right around the clitoris; if your pain tolerance is high and/or your take an anti-inflammatory in advance the pain will be totally negligible.

You're supposed to let the hair grow out a bit before a wax; I've found that one to two weeks of growth is plenty for them to be able to wax properly, but that'll depend on how quickly your hair naturally grows.

In general, can't recommend the brazilian enough. I totally love it and am actually planning to pay ¥7000 for one because I'm sick of how lame shaving down there is.
  • I definitely say get it!!! I was a regualar brazilian getter for several years, however I have transitioned to laser hair removal after finding an awesome groupon deal. So my 2 cents...

the first time will be the worst but I absolutely believe it is worth it. You will need about 2 weeks worth of growth and dont worry about the boyfriend, mine also told me they dont care. I was usually hair free for about 2 weeks before it would start to grow in again. It does grow in finer over time.

Jonsgirl- you may want to try hard wax next time, it is generally a little less painful and I don't think its possible to have as many problems (bleeding, et) because there are no strips to stick to the skin, the wax is applied and then hardens, kinda like silly putty and then just that is pulled off. I didn't have as good as results with it but know people that love it!
  • just do it!
personally, i don't feel pain getting it, but even if you are a bit more delicate, it will only hurt for about 20 mins and that's nothing
btw, just make sure they aren't using regular wax for the brazil wax. they sould use perron rigot or someting similar to this brand (clean and easy etc). that's very important, because regular wax is going to irritate your skin and make the procedure more painful!
  • I would do it! I have done it before but not all the time because its expensive. If you get your eyebrows waxed, it isn't much worse than that in my opinion. It's the first rip that hurts. I also took Advil prior to doing it because my friend advised me to. Took about 4 weeks to grow back :-)

HOT WAX is the best type of wax for Brazillians really. Strip wax and sugaring is sore as **** haha. I get ingrown hairs always, even if I exfoliate day after day. I once tweezed everything out
