Reception menu help
My fiance and I cancelled our big wedding that was set to happen back in January and as a result lost deposits on a lot of stuff. We rescheduled the wedding for March and reduced the guest list all the way down to just 20 people. I don't want to go back to the catering route and decided to try and do everything myself. The wedding is going to take place at 2 pm on a Sunday, and the reception will probably begin around 3 pm.
You wouldn't expect a full meal at that time of the day right? I was think to just have a lite fare reception with drinks and desserts. How does this sound for a menu... Veggie/cheese/fruit platter Meatballs Grilled chicken skewers Mashtini Bar (Mashed potatoes served in martini glasses) Dessert bar (cookies, cake, brownies) Drinks (wine, beer, water, soda) Would you be satisfied with that at 3 pm? Anything I should add or get rid of? Thanks! |
The mashed potatoes in a martini glass sounds cute, but it would be impractical for the guests to eat (because you have to provide spoons too, and they'd have to set down their glasses in order to eat). I would do it in those wonton soup spoons instead:
http://www.asianfoodgrocer.com/produ...ain-soup-spoon And, you can get them in biogradable bamboo and just throw them away (which is what we had), that way you're not stuck with 30-30 spoons! Might I make a suggestion? You can't go wrong with macaroni and cheese! I have a fantastic recipe for gourmet mac and cheese if you want it. It has penne pasta, gruyere, cheddar, and asiago. I think it's a fantastic idea that you're downsizing your wedding. It'll be a lot more intimate and cozy, and I love the idea of h'ordurves and desert. Are you still going to do a cake or cupcakes? Also, I have another suggestion for an h'orderve. Spinach and phyllo dough triangles. You can buy them in bulk at Costco or other grocery stores: http://www.slashfood.com/2005/11/29/...llo-triangles/ We had our caterer make those and they were gone in like 10 minutes! There's also crab cakes that you can buy frozen, shrimp tempura skewers, you don't have to make everything from scratch! I would probably nix the chicken skewers because they don't have much flavor unless you do it Thai-style and add peanut sauce for dipping. Which is delicious. DEFINITELY stick to wine, beer, soda, and water. You could also add a couple of bottles of champagne for a toast. And, if you want to be really fun, you could do a keg of one beer. My mom's friend got remarried and it was like a 100-person wedding and they had three kegs and it was a blast. |
I did all the food for my wedding, and for the dessert I did cupcakes. To make them pretty I topped each one with a fresh flower. They were super adorable, I also did the skewers, adn that is great, maybe before serving drizzle them in a sause. I also agree to serve the potatoes in a type of spoon, so they are easier to eat standing up. Back to sesserts, candies are a good idea and can be the colors you want. Like a jar of M&mīs or Jelly Beans are super cute and good if there are kids.
Congrats and Good Luck. |
Neat, thanks ladies. I never thought about using those kind of spoons. I do love mac n cheese! As for the chicken skewers, I recently went to a restaurant where they had the skewers on top of pita bread and they were coated with some kind of teriyaki. It was really good. Oh, and we will have a small wedding cake that I still need to get a move on to ordering.

If you're going to do chicken skewers, definitely do something like they had at that restaurant!
