Personally, I don't think you should look at it as a cheat day. If you're going about a lifestyle change there's nothing to cheat on. Instead look at it as a special occasion where you can treat yourself. But try not to give yourself the whole day because that's a calorie bomb waiting to happen. When you go out to dinner with your bf, get something that looks pretty healthy. Have a salad and a glass of water first to fill up so you'll eat less of the entree. Maybe ask for half of it immediately in a doggie bag if they're known to have huge portions, maybe skip the appetizer, and share the dessert but really savor it so half of it seems like more than enough. Even better get one of those samplers they do sometimes and share that. Have drinks and have fun and don't berate yourself for eating more than you normally do. Just try and make some moderately healthy decisions.
IMO cheat days rarely work for long because it's in the mindset that it's okay to go out and binge, which is what usually happens for me, when I want to teach myself what normal portion sizes are and what healthy eating really is.

I just discovered this idea yesterday. It's very helpful to me, because I was in the same boat. I am not cheating, just treating - any only RARELY :)

It's totally up to you, and what you think you can handle. I agree that one cheat meal would be better than an entire day. I usually choose one cheat item. For example if I want a dessert, I'll have a very heathy entree. If I want wine, a healthy entree and no dessert.

I find that making a low cal meal at home with my bf can be the most romantic night of them all. Then you aren't too full for after dinner activities either!

One thing to think about is if you are going to cheat on every special occasion. With all the birthdays, anniversaries, parties, and holidays that could average out to only being on plan for 2/3 of the year. They can all add up.

Personally, I think a cheat DAY is not a great idea, a cheat MEAL is ok. For me, in the past I've done the whole cheat day thing and never went back on plan. Every time I go out to eat and have a little extra calories for the day, it's always a healthier choice, no fried foods, extra cheese, butter, etc. I also get veggies instead of fries as a side. Just an idea if you go out, maybe have a couple drinks, but a healthier meal...? And be sure to get back on plan in the morning. I find it helpful to make a plan for the day after a "cheat" meal to help ensure I stay on plan, because I know I'm having oatmeal and a banana for breakfast. :)

All this to say, that even if you plan to indulge that dinner, and your body starts telling you its not comfortable, don't feel obligated to keep eating because "you can."

Happy Valentine's Day!

I totally agree with this. Obviously, from the responses almost everyone has a different method that works for them. But there are some things that just don't sit well in my body anymore.

The other day I went out to eat and I splurged and got pasta in a white wine sauce. I haven't eaten pasta in a LOOONG time. Mostly because I can't control my portions because I love it too much. :) Lets just say... the 20 minute ride home on the subway was the longest, most agonizing ride EVER. I had to RUN to my apartment to get to the bathroom!! I thought I was going to die! I don't know if it was the sauce, the pasta, or the combination of both, but I won't be eating a meal like that anytime soon! :barf:

IMO, a cheat meal is "fine", if its planned for and you set limits. I know, for me, if i tell myself its a "cheat meal", I find myself intentionally ordering the highest calorie meal I can, including dessert and alcohol....because its "OK". ''

I really think you have a to plan what you want and set limits. Otherwise, if you're anything like me, you'll find yourself eating an entire heartbox of chocolates because its your "cheat day!"
