The Wearing of Jeans

Okay,

So, I’ve joined a gym, am eating how I’ve always wanted to eat (intuitively, some organic, and mostly healthy with my random junk treats), and I’m loosing steadily. I’m back in the 220’s for the first time in ages.
Something like two years.
Anyway, so everything’s going really well and I’m happy with it all so far.
BUT.

Jeans. I LOVE jeans, and I’ve never not worn them, but this problem has cropped up in the past few years that is driving me nuts and I can’t seem to find a thread that discusses this.

How do you wear your jeans?
I mean, some of us have to worry about that god forsaken tummy flap, and I’m one of them. I know people who wears their jeans under them and are comfortable and I know people who wear their jeans over the flap and are comfortable.

I’ve tried both, but what’s driving me mad is that even though right now I’ve got a size 20 that fits loosely, my size eighteens that I squeezed into for the longest of times are still very snug. So if I wear my size 20 jeans, they’re slipping off me and I have to wear them extremely high waisted, but I get that little bulge of fat peaking out over the top. EVEN THOUGH THE JEANS ARE LOOSE. I can fit my ARM down my pants while wearing them. I mean… I just don’t know what to do.

So this question is almost laughable, but how in the world do you wear your jeans?

I wear medium rise jeans with a bit or stretch and always over my stomach, I have a fear of looking like a man with a beer gut sticking out if I were to wear then under my tummy. Trick is to find a good pair of jeans with some nice stretch to them to them, that way they fit snugger on your body without being too tight.

I wear my jeans pretty lose, like I can pull them away from my body about an inch, but that just me. I'm an 18 right now, and prob should be wearing a 16, but I have really wide hips so I KNOW the 16's would be snug, for me. I also wear my jean low, low-riders or whatnot...even though I'm still bigger (198) I don't really have an issue with tummy bulges in jeans, I think thats because I have a really long torso.

I agree with Essa, stretch is key for me. If the jeans don't have stretch it's just not as comfy. I like my jeans more fitted because I'm top heavy (I should be happy with 36DDs, right?) and a like a little more fabric or bulk on top for coverage.

That being said, it's totally a person preference, but I wouldn't get a low rise (or too low of a rise) for the exact reason of the muffin top. You want something a little snug when you first buy it or wash it, but that'll stretch out after a few minutes on.

Also, wear a belt. I think that minimizes the muffin tops and keeps the almost-too-big pairs in place until you're really ready for a smaller size.

I am also top heavy with muffin top to boot. I have found that Silver jeans, (Lola and Frances) are the best jeans in the world. The Frances' are mid rise and stretchy, and I have no muffin top and they have enough stretch that they stay in place yet are still slimming on my legs (I have chicken legs lol). The Lola's are a little "stiffer" and more trimming in the waist while looser through the hips/thighs. If you have smaller legs and a bigger belly, the Frances are the way to go, but if you are thicker through the hips and thigh then its better to go with Lola's. I tend to think that the belly over the pants looks worse, but to each his own!

I have a long torso, a high waist and big hips (thanks, hourglass figure) so I tend to wear a lower rise of jeans, and I hate wearing them when they're too loose. I have some pairs that have stretch and some that don't, I have no preference when it comes to that, as long as they fit well.

I am in a size 16 jeans right now. Mine are loose in the thighs and butt but are still a teeny tight in the waist. I could probably go down to a 14 but I think I wouldn't be very comfy with the waist situation. I don't have a belly that could hang over but you can see a line in my waist where the jeans hit... does that make sense?

I was thinking about making a thread about jeans because I think i'm going crazy. I love levis because the midrise bootcut jeans fit me so well. So i'm browsing their website and decide to look at sizing because I just bought some size 10s in Levis and Lee jeans. Levis website says size 10 is a 39-40 inch hip, but around the widest portion of my booty is 43 which they say is a size 14. But Levis 14s just fall off me so I don't get it.

BrittStar027 05-11-2010 11:17 PM

I'm living in Gap Curvy jeans right now. They're stretchy, have a nice boot cut and fit our curves! I like to wear my jeans at my waist, the muffin top thing totally freaks me out, so i want to shove everything into my pants that will fit. But these have been my fail safe since i started losing weight.

Belt? Take it in? Try different cut/brand?

A.

I completely agree, the Lola's are my staple... Totally worth the money.

I wear mine loose. Since I lost weight I don't have a lot of fat on my hips anymore and all my pants tend to sit right on my hips.

I don't always love the styles of tops at Lane Bryant, but their jean sizing system is a thing of brilliance. Whether you're apple, pear, hourglass, whatever, they generally have a size that will fit you perfectly. I am almost disappointed at shrinking out of them in a couple of pants sizes, lol.

birdtostone 05-12-2010 03:07 PM

Thanks for all the tips everyone!

Yeah, I'll definitely be looking into the different brands and such, but as far as the more expensive ones go, I won't be able to blow a huge chunk of change on $70 jeans or anything. Particularly since I'm still losing.

I may have to just suck it up and deal for another 20lbs or so. I mean, that's what I've been doing anyway, right? Haha.

I'll definitely set a day aside though to go get a good jean trying on session going. That way I can find a brand or fit that's best. Anyone have any stores to suggest (other than lane bryant) where you've found good, decently priced jeans?

Kabaker: That made total sense. I can't wait till I get to the point where a line is the thing I have to worry about.

Britt: That sounds just like me. I HATE the muffin top on me, so I do as much stuffing as I can.

rainydays 05-23-2010 04:12 PM

Maurices is a great place to shop for plus size jeans. I love their store brand. I wear their Briana Midrise and love them. And they're only around $35, which is great for in-between-jeans :) And as someone mentioned, definitely wear a belt, it works wonders.

MosesMom1 05-24-2010 09:38 AM

For me, it's not so much the jeans as it is the shirt that goes with them. I am in an 18 now, but I just went through the "20's are loose, but weird" stage myself.
I wear my jeans higher waisted, but I layer shirts. Ex. Cute tank top under a blouse so the layer underneath hides my lower tummy buldge and the blouse or T-shirt, or whatever covers the muffin top at the waist. Just depends on your body type, I guess.

I wear Torrid's Virtual Stretch jeans - they fit perfectly, have plenty of give and take and have been very forgiving with weight loss and weight gain!

Mickeypnd 05-24-2010 11:19 PM

I wear the mid rise stretch jeans. i need to cover the tummy to feel comfortable in them.

Gourmet Bean 05-25-2010 02:50 PM

I'm in the same boat with the stretch jeans. They're amazing. I wear mine JUST below my belly button. I have a very short waist. It prevents it from looking like I'm wearing some bad shapewear and just bulging/spilling out at the top. I have an apple shaped friend who wears her jeans below her belly and I just think it honestly looks awful. It's how she's most comfortable though. I have some stretchy size 18's if you'd like them! Very comfy! Lol. I just smalled into some 16s and some old 17s I had from when I was a teen and I'm not sure what to do with those and my old size 20s. Charity is most likely where they're going.
