Scary Situation

Ok so I have lost 30lbs in about 3 1/2 months. I have been doing it healthily and have not taken diet pills or any medications. I have noticed my hair is really thinning around my bangs. Has anyone had hair loss because of weight loss? My hair is the one thing I have always loved about myself and I am REALLY worried.

Please someone put me a little at ease.

Are you by chance cutting to much fat out of your diet?

kabaker 04-18-2010 10:26 PM

I dont know. I eat a lot of veggies and I get a good amount of protein and fiber... I am really worried about it. VERY WORRIED.

I was going to suggest protein, but you say you get plenty (although if you *think* you are getting enough without actually tracking it, then you might want to start measuring it to make sure).

Angi could be right- cutting out too much fat could do it. Do you still cook with olive oil or anything like that? if you've cut that out dramatically you could try adding it back in again a bit

Try adding some healthy fat. Olive oil, flax seed oil, avocado, salmon. I know on WW they require you to shoot for 2 servings a day because without them your hair and nails get brittle.

Are you getting enough fat in your diet? I don't know if it's the same principal, but if I am eating too little fat- my skin gets really dry. My hands look old and brittle also. Could that affect your hair?

Do you think I should take a multivitamin?

dragonfly21 04-18-2010 10:33 PM

hahaah- we were all thinking the same!

Iconised Ghost 04-18-2010 10:35 PM

you could take a multivitamin, but im not sure that it would help, since i havent read anything that implies a vitamin deficiency is a common cause of hair loss. more often its the fat or protein thing. Although a multivitamin might not be a bad idea in general. Would just be a waste of money if you are fine vitamin wise and just peeing the multivitamin out xD

kabaker 04-18-2010 10:37 PM

I am really worried if I am the only person on here that has experienced this. I think I will up my protein and fat consumption and maybe try taking a multivitamin. There is so content on the web that I found but it applies to "crash dieting" I have just been eating healthy, not a crash diet.

Maybe I should make an appointment with a doctor? I don't know who I would talk to about it though.

I have read that iron deficiency is a cause of hair loss during dieting. I have cut out all red meat... maybe I am not getting enough iron?

Iconised Ghost 04-18-2010 10:39 PM

it could be iron :) you arent the only one! i have seen this come up heaps

kabaker 04-18-2010 10:40 PM

Thank goodness I am not alone. I have this huge fear I am going to go bald. I am pretty sure I wouldn't be able to deal.

Iconised Ghost 04-18-2010 10:41 PM

you're not on medifast are you?

Bekah 04-18-2010 10:43 PM

I have iron deficient anemia that comes and goes, but loosing hair is one of the things that sometimes tips me off that my iron might be getting low. Best to talk to a doctor though. They can do a cbc blood test and look at your iron levels.
