Owwww! I shouldn't be allowed to use hand weights...

  • In an effort to throw some variety into my workout, I've started using 10 pound, regular old hand weights for my weight training part of the week, rather than the Nautilus machine at the little workout center I use.

I shouldn't be allowed to. I'm too clumsy! This morning at the end of my workout I managed to whack myself HARD in the back...RIGHT in the spine, DEAD CENTER between my shoulder blades, with the weight.

Ow ow ow ow ow ow! Still hurts!

Not a good way to start my week! I had hoped, when all this weight loss/improved health stuff started that doing all this working out would help my coordination. Apparently not...

Has anyone else done something similarly goober-rific? Or am I all alone?
  • I can't believe no one has replied to this thread yet! I bet we'd see some great "doh!" stories!

I was called "Treadmill" at my last gym...I was sprinting on a treadmill and ended up skimming the side with my foot, lost my footing and fell, being thrown off onto my belly! The only good thing about this was being in the "women's section" of the gym, so no guys were around to witness it!

And don't get my started with free weights or resistance bands...I'm a clutz, so you can imagine the bruises I've given myself! LoL
  • LOL. this thread made me laugh even though I am not laughing at your pain!! I have never had an accident while using weights but while i was on my treadmill i for some reason closed my eyes trying to pretend i was outside, and face planted it!

I had such a huge bruise on my knees. arms, cheecks it was horrible. Im only glad this happened to me while i was at home instead of at the gym!!
  • Ouch! I am pretty clumsy myself but have never done that!

I have fallen off the treadmill though.. Did the same as Mickey and closed my eyes. But our treadmill was right in front of a wall. I ended up slamming right into the back wall.. maybe I fell asleep or something??

I am sure lots of us have had an "exercise" mishap.
  • I'm pretty accident prone, and as a result my workouts can get pretty funny...or painful

I've hit myself in the head with hand weights. I've almost hit the dog with handweights. I've managed to stub my toe while doing crunches (still not sure how that happened). I've fallen sideways off the treadmill.

Also, I like how there's an appropriate smiley to match my situation:
  • Gosh...the treadmill and I don't get along. I've never fallen off of it, but I did nearly run off the side once. I can't walk in a straight line, much less run in one. So I veered to the right a little too much, but managed to catch myself once my right foot hit the non-moving side piece. It's coming one day...I just know the face plant is right around the corner.
  • I'm always terrified that I will hit my head with the handweights. It hasn't happened though.
The first time I tried to do pushups in front of my sisters dog he thought I was trying to play and got his feet stuck in my hair, it took us a while (and a lot of screaming on his part) to untangle. He has stayed far away when I work out after that
  • Hand weights, ah yes, we have a love hate relationship. I've dropped them on my toes, hit myself in the back of the head, dropped them behind me - resulting in it bouncing off my back and then my butt (that one hurt.)

I can barely walk without tripping over my own feet. I must be a sight see while I'm working out. I tell myself all the time - okay, I'm not going to fall over, hit myself, etc - but it still happens. :P
  • That sounds awful! I hope you are ok! I never touch weights more than 5 pounds (try to stay in the 2-4 pound range) because its just too dangerous for me! I will pull a muscle, or damage my hands, or put a dent in the floor! I'm too clumsy!
  • Haha! I haven't had any problems with weights but I did accidentally kick my dog in the head during pilates once.
  • I'm going on 8 months of injury from getting thrown off an elliptical trainer. Granted, it was a mechanical failure that caused it...

But the ones really getting injured during weights are my animals. They always find a way to get near me, under me, etc. Once I beaned one of my cats on the head with a kettlebell and spent the next 12 hours watching to make sure he didn't have a concussion (he was fine)...he came behind me while I was doing an overhead lift and I lowered the bell right onto his little kitty head.

One of these days I'm going to get injured with my dog, though...she likes to "help" by standing on me for pushups and counting situps with kisses.
  • Hahaha! Yeah everytime I do some home work out my dog is right there like I need help. And if I lay on the floor to do some situps she cuddles next to me on the floor.
  • My rat terrier jumps on my head during push-ups, but has only been kicked once. It also took a while for them to get used to the motion of the elliptical trainer...got whacked a couple of times with it. The worst, though, was when Miss Daisy was a little tiny puppy. I was on the recumbent bike and she went to sniff my feet (while they were moving) without my seeing her. I felt her when the pedal smacked her head!
