How do they do it?

The skinny girls who drink every weekend and then eat pizza/junk food after drinking. How do they not gain weight? I know some people genetically have fast metabolisms, but ALL of my friends do this(not just the skinny ones, the normal weight ones too) and it's not like most of them are super healthy during the week, they eat lots of pizza and Mexican during the week too. And then consume 1000s of calories in alcohol each weekend. Can they all have superman metabolisms? Is there some secret I am missing?lol

Does anyone else get frustrated with this?

JigglyBits 10-01-2009 10:46 AM

It isn't fair really that we gain so fast while they can pig out and not gain 1lb, but as you said some of them genetically can't gain much and I guess others are just super active. I guess we'll have to wait for scientists to discover the secret, mass produce it in pill form and place it on shelves so we can all share the benefits :p

girlonfire 10-01-2009 10:52 AM

I mean I have to admit, alcohol has never really factored hugely into my weight loss; I have lost, gained, and maintained with it. Probably because I use diet mixers and don't drink a whole lot.

It's the junk food that bothers me. Maybe I just found every person on campus with a fast metabolism and befriended them ;)

CabyBakes 10-01-2009 10:58 AM

I used to be that way back in the good ole days! Now I just look at that pizza and it jumps onto my hips!!!

Sylvied 10-01-2009 11:00 AM

I consider it one of life's mysteries... and on my truly nasty days I remind myself that even the fastest metabolisms slow with age. It's uncharitable I know but it keeps me from thinking that these people somehow live a charmed life.

And remember that skinny doesn't necessarily mean healthy. A prolonged diet of booze and pizza impacts one's overall nutritional health and that can impact sleep and alertness during the day, brain functions, hair and nail and skin health... all sorts of things.

So work at being healthy and the skinny will take care of itself.

But yeah, it gets to me too sometimes.

Lynn101 10-01-2009 11:01 AM

It frustrates me daily...I have a busy social life which is TERRIBLY difficult when you are trying to be good. I have some friends that have incredible will power and will go out with us, have rum and diet, and be fine. Others will pig out BUT will go the gym the next day and KILL themselves in cardio.

I think it depends on age too. When I was younger, I had friends that would eat all the time and never gain. Now that we're older...yeah not the same story. Your body changes.

The key is not to compare yourself with anyone else (I did this often)...your body is different and you have to embrace it. If it means, you have to put more effort in the gym then oh well but at least you can have that mexican too. :D Take the good with the bad I guess ya know...

girlonfire 10-01-2009 11:05 AM

Sad thing is, I AM in the good ole days haha. I'm only 20(almost, one more month)! I understand that being skinny=healthy and that in the long run trying to manage my weight through diet and exercise is far better for my health. It's still so frustrating though!

Eumie 10-01-2009 11:31 AM

This may not be the case in the people you're talking about, but I have a friend who eats CRAP! Full fat lasagna with garlic cheese bread and broccoli with cheese sauce followed by a super sugary dessert. However, I struggle when I go over there to eat only one slice of lasagna, eat as much broccoli I can with as little cheese as possible, and no garlic cheese bread while she loads her plate up, eats about 1/3 of her piece of lasagna, 1/2 a piece of garlic cheese bread and a little broccoli. And she never finishes her dessert, either.

So while she's not healthy by any means, she eats much smaller quantities of foods than I. So I'd rather eat a really big veggie salad with a little cheese and dressing while she eats her 2 chicken mcnuggets and 10 french fries.

Oh, and to put some perspective on it, she thought she needed to lose 10 lbs. and her dr. said that she needs to lose 20. And she has high blood pressure.

Mickeypnd 10-01-2009 11:33 AM

I know. i get frustrated at that ALL the time. but bodies work in different ways. I guess.

bargoo 10-01-2009 12:21 PM

Well, back in the day I ate anything I wanted and drank as much and as often as I wanted and look what happened to me . One day I stepped on my scale (something I rarely did ) and saw that I was over 200 pounds and 5 feet tall, not what you would call cute or healthy. It catches up with you. So I would say don't envy those girls and guys who eat and drink anything they want, they may not always get away with it.

Taylor86 10-01-2009 12:23 PM

eumie is exactly right.

I watch all these people at school eat all this crap...but they buy these bags of chips, eat a few...share the rest...

Go out to eat...eat 1/2 and never finish

She is exactly right.

However, I would rather eat healthier foods which I can eat more of because they are lower in calories then 1/2 a dinner. 4 cups of veggies and a seasoned chicken breast takes me much further than 10 chips and a small slice of pizza.

And I also agree that this is not good for their over-all health. Eating that way is so harmful to your body...geeze

YOU are on the right track...I know it *isn't fair* but actually, they should be jealous of you for being able to say *NO*!!

MadameZombie 10-01-2009 01:12 PM

I never get upset over this because I know that half of those girls are "skinnyfat."

Some women can look extremely thin but have much much higher body fat percentage and be on their way to loads of health problems in the future.

Also, I'm willing to bet most of them have the upper body strength of a new born kitten.

PammyFl 10-01-2009 01:16 PM

It isn't fair that we cant eat whatever we want, but to be honest I am glad that we have to work for it. I know very small girls that may be small in size but are terrible unhealthy. They cant even keep up with me walking at a normal stroll. Just because your small doesn't mean you are healthy.

girlonfire 10-01-2009 01:43 PM

I know that skinny and healthy aren't the same thing(I don't know why my earlier post says skinny=healthy. Chalk it up to cold medicine?) but the little shallow part of me sometimes wishes it would be nice to not be constantly judged even though I am healthier than they are.

Also, it bugs me to death when these girls complain about my "weight obsession". Just because I have to work for it.

luvja 10-01-2009 01:45 PM

I understand your frustrations! A few of my skinny/average weight friends eat more/drink more than me, and they don't exercise. I am totally jealous. My metobolism stinks

tigarlily1 10-01-2009 01:50 PM

I used to be able to do this but I think I would go the whole day without eating and then drink and eat pizza at night. Which, if you think about it, would actually be possible considering alcohol (6 beers = 768 calories) and pizza (3 slices = 816) only equals out to about 1584 calories... you could actually maintain on that. It's definately not healthy tho.

starfishkitty 10-02-2009 01:25 AM

Ugh, you're telling me. I used to do it... but it wasn't nice to me, like it was to the rest of my friends. So, while over the years I became a bloated, sick, HUGE monstrosity... these skanks (though I love 'em hehe) stayed tiny and perfect!! Ah well, life isn't fair, is it? :)

Now that I've quit drinking and partying and doing all that stuff to my body on a regular basis.... I've SERIOUSLY gotten majorly healthier.... and it feels great!

I mean, I still go out now and then (I'm going out tomorrow night for my sister's birthday actually! Club, here we come!), but if it happens that another friend asks me out a week or two or even a month after that... I have to turn them down because that's just too much for me now. Especially since a night of drinking and food debauchery (cos face it, that's where it leads) usually sets me back on my weight loss for about a week. :(

It is possible.... but not the way it used to be.... but you know what? It's worth it... I like being healthy. :)

I do this too  And i remind myself that there are other ways to get "fat", and that even skinny people who eat badly can have fat sitting around their organs so fooey to them! :s:

KurLEQ 10-02-2009 01:47 AM

I just think of myself as ahead of the curve  It may be hard to get into the habit of eating well and exercising now but I imagine it would be harder in ten years when all my friends start.

chickennugget126 10-02-2009 01:50 AM

I have skinny friends, too, who don't exercise (how DO they do it?!)

But then I think, well, at least I basically *have* to exercise on a regular basis to lose/maintain, which keeps me healthy and not just weight-wise.

I like to think of it as nature's way of reminding me to stay active.

But of course a lot of times I wish I could eat whatever I wanted and sit on my bum... :O

benchmarkman 10-02-2009 06:45 AM

I'm one of those people that always gets asked how do you do it, eat like that and stay. What you don't understand is people like me put WAY more effort into staying skinny than the average person. You don't see me sweating my but off everyday at the gym running on the treadmilll. You don't see me eating 80% of the other times watching every calorie I eat. You only these people eat large portions 1 time and then you just automatically assume they are "born" skinny. Its really frustrating to people who work so hard to maintain their weight and then when they eat a larger portion everyone is like wow how do you do it? All you do is eat, which is completely untrue.

girlonfire 10-03-2009 03:48 AM

If you read my original post, I mentioned that it is a consistent pattern of overeating on a junk food, I made a point to mention that it is not just once in awhile. I did that for the exact purpose of not offending people who do work hard. Please read a post in it's entirety before responding. With that said, I am sorry you were offended. It was meant to be a humorous post of solidarity.

Again I will make the point you are still not seeing them eat 80% of their meals. You also don't see them in the gym or during their daily activities. YOu ASSUME because you see them eat 20% of thier meals and of those 20% they over eat.

stellarosa27 10-03-2009 03:11 PM

I live with 4 guys, 3 of them rail thin. I see what they eat, and they do NOT work out, nor do 2 of them do a lot of activity during the day that would lend itself to being considered exercise (they have desk jobs, with the exception of one, who's a lab worker so he stands up all day). Then, they get home and play video games all night. So unless using your right hand on the mouse and your left hand to type counts as exercise...

Same thing with my college roommates (girls) - we were together 24-7. They didn't work out (or walk to class) and had nightly Wendy's runs. This caused me to gain 20 lbs, and caused them to gain nothing (and I DID walk to class). There's no assumption there, unless I want to assume that they were throwing up everything they ate, or were secretly working out at 2 am.

Some people just have that metabolism that allows them to eat what they want, not work out, and not gain weight. Her post wasn't a personal attack on you, she was just venting frustration.

girlonfire 10-03-2009 06:32 PM

I am a student in college, these are my very close friends, and we eat 2/3 of meals together and they are constantly telling me about how they admire my motivation to go to the gym and that they will someday go. That is why I made a point of mentioning my CLOSE friends who I eat with often. It is definitely not a personal attack on you or anyone who works hard; it was simply a comment about fast metabolisms. They were an example, not the entire point of my post. The main point was the people who do not exercise or work hard. And I know because I eat with them.

I think its a blessing in disguise. After we complete our journeys we're gonna be pros at health and getting the baby weight off and having healthy LIVERS!!! Dont let it frustrate you! sometime we are given hurdles so we can learn from them and better our lives . Most of my skinny or normal friends have acne/heart/high cholesterol issues. im 20lbs overweight and have none of these problems because i drink lots of water and stay way from too much meat/processed/pesticide filled stuff. Had i been "blessed" with a fast metabolism i wouldn't care or read about the disgusting things that are in processed non organic food that will eventually give me cancer or shut down my thyroid. So be happy your in a good zone!

Tante Claire 10-03-2009 10:13 PM

There are people who are like that (eat unhealthy food, not gain weight). And I know two of them. And while they look awesome for their age (we are all in our late 30s or early 40s) they have cardiac problems and are on medication for high blood pressure. Neither would be able to keep up with me running, or biking. How do they do it? When they were younger they had fast metabolism, now they starve, going on coffee and nibbling on something for most of the day, and then binge on unhealthy food and alcohol. Which kinda explains their conundrum.

I have been overweight/obese for 5 years now, but I was always otherwise healthy, active and had a superb diet. They can't believe I keep passing my yearly physicals with flying colors. I decided to lose weight before my luck, or good genes, couldn't save my *** anymore. :)

The point that skinny =/= healthy cannot be stressed enough.
