Which is better?

Regular cheerios or the multigrain cheerios? I'm very curious because this cereal is almost a daily breakfast for me.

I absolutely love the multigrain cheerios, but they have 6g of sugar compared to the regular cheerios 1g of sugar.

They are 110 calories compared to 100 calories per serving.

Their first main ingredient is "whole grain corn", while the regular's main ingredient is "whole grain oats".

But the mutligrain cheerios has 100% DV of 10 vitamins and minerals. Where as the regular has 10-25% of the DV.

Here are the labels.

What do you guys think?

I looked at these in the supermarket, and chose the regular. It's better to get your vitamins and minerals from foods that naturally contain them (see Michael Pollan and the concept of "nutritionism") and I like to save my sugar for fruits and sweets rather than breakfast food ;)

I eat my recommend servings of fruits and veggies a day. I also take a multivitamin. I just prefer the multigrain over regular cheerios. And was wondering if there's a different between the whole grain corn or whole grain oats.

benchmarkman 09-12-2009 11:55 AM

IMO I would go with which ever you prefer. To me it's all about caloires and the difference is negligable between the two.

I think oats might be better for you than corn, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

There's a whole debate going on about how the food companies are putting corn and soy in everything.

If you prefer the whole grain, go for the whole grain. If you were eating it before bed, I'd say hmm, maybe go for the lower sugar - but since its your *breakfast* food and you're eating your fruits and veggies anyway, just go for whatever you like best :)

Why did you have to post this??? OMG I LOVE Multigrain Cheerios! Now I want some.....

KellyBelly28 09-12-2009 02:48 PM

I think it is funny that they put "whole grain corn" on the label. Isn't most stuff that is made out of corn whole??

I would agree with everyone else and say whichever you prefer. There are positives and negatives to both, so I think they are pretty much even.

Maybe this is a silly idea.

But, you could always mix half and half. I used to love the banana nut ones as a snack, but really they weren't that good for you. So I ate 1/2 cup banana and 1/2 cup regular.

lexie67 09-12-2009 06:02 PM

The regular are better for you, I'd say -- it comes down to the sugar number, and the vitamins don't really negate that, especially since you're getting those elsewhere in your diet. But honestly, if you like the Multigrain Cheerios that much more, there's no reason to switch. Regular aren't that much healthier, and the calorie difference is negligible if you're only having one serving in the morning.

"whole grain corn"

Think about that for a second.

What is that?

--sorry--leaving now--carry on--

kswood87 09-12-2009 06:35 PM

yeah i would definitely say the whole grain oats, you have to think about what is easier for your body to digest.....mmk well you don't HAVE to but it is something to consider and our bodies don't digest corn very well.

helleke 09-14-2009 06:08 AM

i like oats much ,i think.

Iconised Ghost 09-14-2009 06:15 AM
