Healthy, Portable Snacks

Hey, ya'll!!!

I know there have been posts on what you like to eat before, but I'd really like some more ideas for snacks that are health AND portable. Stuff that can be in my purse all day. And preferably something that doesn't look like "diet food." I mean... we're in our 20s and on the go a lot and one of my problems is stopping for junk on the run. Plus if I do have a snack with me, I don't want it to be wierd looking "diet food" that all the people around me judge me about. Ok. That is all. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. :D

Oh, and for me snacks are <200 calories, so something around that amount would be great. ;)

skinnywish 05-04-2009 03:50 PM

-roasted almonds (count out a serving in a ziploc - i think 100 calories is about 20 almonds?!?)
-fiber one bars - 130 calories and SO good! the oats and chocolate one seriously tastes like a chocolate bar, and the peanut butter one is yummy too
-those mini rice cake things - replace chips! my faves are salt and vinegar, cheddar, sea salt and lime

can't wait to hear everyone else's suggestions!

RealCdn 05-04-2009 04:05 PM

Okay, I make it myself, but lately I've been really into beef jerky. It's completely portable and high in protein. You also can't eat it really fast! I'm not sure if commercially available jerky is quite as good for you, but the higher protein levels should stave off hunger. The other thing I do is make a cake with protein powder in it (chocolate), but it doesn't travel all that well. However, I've fed it to people and they just think it's cake. :)

(if you're interested in the cake)

what about home air popped popcorn? You can add no or as little butter etc as you want. I prefer to add none because its healthier, and the popcorn tends to go soggy with the butter if you want to keep it in your bag for a while

ShutterK 05-04-2009 05:17 PM

Low-fat pretzels?

Iconised Ghost 05-04-2009 05:29 PM

oooh vita wheat minis! 16 crackers for 86 calories! OMg heaven

beerab 05-04-2009 05:38 PM

Wheat thin crackers are good, fruits like an apple or orange, fiber one bars are GOOD (but they can make you gassy), string cheese or other cheeses :)

MaryEllen 05-04-2009 05:50 PM

You could also carry around bags of cereal or something. Or get one of these nifty things: Cereal-On-The-Go. I don't know if the milk would make you appear too noticeable, but I think those things are so cool. lol

sprklemajik 05-04-2009 06:42 PM

I carry around a granola bar. Usually they are filling enough to sustain me for a while.

angelanicole23 05-04-2009 06:46 PM

Curves granola bars are so delish! Lots of fruit and crackers/rice cakes.

Thighs Be Gone 05-04-2009 06:46 PM

15 raw almonds and a 1/4 cup of raisins in a ziploc.

Apple

3-4 Clementines (teency oranges)

1/2 turkey sandwich

Sugar-free gelatin cups--just 5 calories

boiled eggs

Real Cdn- Thanks so much for the recipe!!! I was wathing the premiere of "Cook Yourself Thin" at the Gym and they were making cupcakes with zucchini!!! I was wondering if it were actually good! Oh, and how do you make jerky? Do you have to have one of those fancy food dehydrators?

MaryEllen: That is sooooo cool!!!! I LOVE cereal and that is soooooo cool!!! There is a container store here and I have to have one!!! Have to have one!!!

Thanks everyone!!! You're giving me great ideas!!! Keep em coming!!!

RealCdn 05-04-2009 08:38 PM

Zucchini is a great addition to baked goods. It keeps them moist, without adding a lot of calories.

I do have a dehydrator (used mainly for fruit when we had a lot of fruit trees in an old house). I used a variety of recipes off the internet (some sweet, some hot, etc) but I'm sure I saw instructions on how to make jerky in an oven. I didn't bookmark any of the recipes, but here's a basic 'how to' and I checked, it does tell you how to use an oven.

I like to take a cup of frozen grapes (about 100 calories) when I leave in the morning. I just have to eat them right away (or else they get mushy)

A piece of fruit
baggie of cereal
Trail Mix
crackers and PB
half a sandwich

CHUNKEY_MUNKEY 05-04-2009 10:20 PM

nuts
popcorn
cereal
half a sandwich
pre portioned amounts of baked corn chips
those apple slices with fat free caramel dipping sauce
petite carrot and celery sticks with a little refregeorator blue cheese dressings ( im an awful speller )
rice cakes
fiber one bars
benefiber individual drink mix packages ( the berry burst flavor is good ) adds fiber to your diet and keeps you full for a little bit
100 calorie english muffins with fat free cheese and a tomato slice
chex mix
i chew gum when im only mildly hungry it holds me for like an hour ..... hope i helped !

smallification 05-04-2009 10:22 PM

I don't like to eat a lot of carbs, and I always need more protein, so for snacks I do:
  • fruit
  • turkey pepperoni (50 cal apiece, low fat)
  • low-fat cheese strings
  • nuts
  • boiled eggs
  • protein drinks
  • cottage cheese
  • greek yogurt

I'm glad someone else is as excited about it as I was! haha

Callie1983 05-05-2009 12:16 PM

Oooh! I like this thread. My old standby has been Kashi granola bars. I love pretty much all of them. Also, a new thing I have found are:
Welch's Fruit and Yogurt Snacks - I have had them in Strawberry & Blueberry and they are SO good - they taste like candy, and they are only 90 calories
Also, Welch's Berry Medly packs they are 90 calories also. I found them at Target.
Although not very portable, I love the Laughing Cow cheese wedges and Melba toast.
Keep the ideas coming. I need some more ideas too!!

I know, right!!! Thank's ladies! I'm really liking this thread too. :)

And Mary Ellen: I am STILL excited about the cereal container. :carrot:

I carry a banana and an orange at all times. And the little fat free flavored milks. They come in packages like juice boxes for little kids and don't have to be refrigerated because they've had the lactose removed.

Oranges are my go-to snack, but holy crap you can NOT peel an orange if anyone is within sniffing distance or you will have everyone asking for a piece.

I'm not familiar with these... what brand are they? I'm interested.

LMAO

ShutterK 05-05-2009 06:02 PM

Ooh, you know what's a good snack? Kosher dills (the mini ones)... only 5 calories each. Not sure how portable they are since we keep them fridged.

These lactose-removed ones are some Turkish brand, I got them at the foreign grocery down the street because I was too lazy to drive to Food Lion and I won't be buying them again because they have coumarin (a potentially poisonous additive) in them. Didn't know that until I went and checked for you, and now my psychosomatic tendencies have me thinking I have kidney tumors. But do not fret!

The other ones I absolutely LOVE and usually drink, are Horizon Organic brand. They're 1% shelf stable milk boxes (no refrigeration required) and they come in plain, vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate flavor. I've included the link for anyone else who wants to try them. They have printable coupons. :D

And yes, I get vicious about my oranges. I have been known to hiss at people like a mad cat. More often than not, I break it into quarters and start inhaling it as fast as I can, then act like I don't know what anyone is talking about if they ask.

i ALWAYS have some kind of granola or packages snack like that thats either 1-2 points in my purse. curves ones are actually great, and i LOVE the weight watchers ones too- especially the brownie with icing. ive even eaten one on the sly in a club once when i knew stopping by mcds on the way home wouldve been tempting!

brooksrm 09-26-2009 01:40 PM

Fiber One bars (oats and chocolate) are yummy, 130ish? calories, and the generic tastes EXACTLY like the brand name

Also, FiberPlus bars with antioxidants, I think they're by Kellogg's, 120 calories, and they taste like a crunch bar!

I like these because the fiber is good for you, they're whole grain, they taste like candy bars if you use your imagination a little bit, and the fiber fills you up so half an hour later you won't be craving something else.

Also, Emerald came out with 100 calorie packs of almonds, cocoa roasted almonds, and walnuts mixed with almonds. I read in You on a Diet that about 80 or so calories of walnuts or almonds about 30 min before a meal will slow down your digestion so you'll feel fuller after your meal. It seems to work for me, and it also seems to tide me over pretty well if I just have a small portion of nuts for a snack. It's a whole lot easier than counting how many nuts you're scooping up!

KurLEQ 09-28-2009 01:05 AM

An apple and two 100 calorie bars usually help me through the day. Sometimes I'll throw some Kashi cereal in a ziploc and carry it around with me. I don't use milk on it because I think the crunch tricks my mind into thinking it's a horrible bag of potato chips.

ANewCreation 09-28-2009 11:43 AM

Big fan of the protein snacks. A little goes a long way..... ;)

Nuts
Turkey Jerky
Laughing cow cheese ( my fav is to take one wedge and stuff 2 fresh figs--delicious)
Baby Bell cheese--low fat or regular. I love cheese at room temperature!

For anything you want chilled, a small insulated lunch sack is great for toting around beverages, lunches and snacks.

Enjoy!

Feral 09-28-2009 02:43 PM

Def gonna repeat some here but these are staples for me... I just change them up when I get tired of them.

Fiber One Bars -- oats and choc is YUMMY, but they can make you gassy... and DO NOT, I repeat, do NOT eat more than 1 in a 24 hour period. LOL They taste like a candy bar to me so I eat one when I have a craving for sweets and sometimes I'll eat half then eat the other half later in the day.

Carrots w/ FF ranch
Cucumbers in vinegar
Apple
Orange

Fat Free yogurt (I usually have yogurt with a sliced up banana in the morning for breakfast. You can also add granola to it if you like a crunch)

Frozen Grapes (I freeze them over night and then put them in my lunch box at work. They thaw out some but are still partially frozen which makes me slow down to eat them)

Quaker Oat Mini Rice Cakes - 60 calories for 8 cakes (My fav are the cheddar - better than cheetos to me, and the caramel - again for the sweet tooth)

String cheese or baby bell cheese wheels. I'm not a big fan of cheese but the baby bell cheese wheels are good because they're only 1 point... and its a little bit stronger than I like so it completely cut out whatever craving I was having.

I love the really big dill pickles. Those are super low in calories. I think its only 5-10. I could eat the whole jar of those things!

I found this online yesterday when I was looking for some ideas:
Make this on-the-go snack mix for the week using a few simple ingredients you may already have on hand: Mix 4 cups of Cheerios cereal; 2 cups of pretzels, oyster crackers, or popcorn; and 1/2 cup of peanuts, raisins, miniature marshmallows, or candy-coated chocolate candies. Scoop up 1/2 cup (100 calories) for a snack or pack it in your briefcase. Store the remainder in an airtight container. This recipe makes 13 servings of 1/2 cup.

If you're a cereal person you could make this breakfast or a snack. Personally, I'm not big on cereal:

For a 90-calorie breakfast snack mix, combine 4 cups of Cheerios with 2 cups of French Toast Crunch cereal, 1 cup of cinnamon-raisin bagel chips (broken into bite-size pieces), and 1/2 cup raisins. One serving equals 1/2 cup, so you’ll have plenty of mix left to share and eat throughout the week. Store the remaining mix in an airtight container.

Keep the ideas coming! I get stuck in ruts because I know certain things are certain points and its easy because I know what it is rather than looking or concocting it myself.

Mickeypnd 09-28-2009 03:30 PM

I really like 100 cal. popcorn. they are SO yummy. and you get a lot for only 100 calories.

and frozen grapes are yummy. with a cup of low fat yogurt, SO good.

KurLEQ 09-28-2009 10:52 PM

Good one, Mickey! I forgot about the 100 cal popcorn. I'm a popcorn junkie and this was the only solution I found to satisfy my craving. I'm still tempted to melt some extra butter on it though LOL
