Why is it.....

.....that I love the way I feel after I go to the gym or work out at home, but I have to talk myself into going everyday? I'm just wondering if anyone else feels this way. I will give myself every excuse not to go work out, but I know I feel better when I do? It's obnoxious!

junebug41 01-21-2009 05:19 PM

It really is, isn't it? But as they say, the road to **** is paved with good intentions.

I can tell myself I'm going to the gym every day of the week, but I've found that has little to do with whether or not I actually go. I've said it before and I'll say it again, motivation is fleeting. I think half the battle is figuring out how to deal with the peaks and valleys.

I have always told my husband the hardest part of my run was getting the first foot out the door. Now I have a hard time getting my butt upstairs to do a video but once I'm going it goes super fast and I feel great. I do the same thing when it comes to cleaning though. Once I get up and get going I can't stop. LOL!

hotnewspirits 01-21-2009 05:23 PM

I'm kicking myself now because I didn't work out in the morning when I should have and now either have to wait until my family goes to bed to work out in the basement or try to do some quiet exercises in my room. I wanted to wake up this morning but it was like my face was glued to my pillow!

I always get an adrenaline rush after working out, and if I work out I usually end up eating better so that I don't waste the calorie expenditure, but sometimes it's really hard!

I wish I had advice but I'm still trying to figure it out myself

beerab 01-21-2009 05:43 PM

I'm the same way- once I'm home I don't want to go workout!

BUT when I'm at work I want to go home- so I go on my lunch hour to the gym lol.

Days that I have off and I want to go to the gym, I plan stuff to do in the area so I'll go- my gym is by the grocery store I go to so I'll go to the gym then go grocery shopping. :)

It's just one of those things where you got to force your butt to go!

Kataclismic 01-21-2009 05:49 PM

I've been doing it for almost 5 years, and I still feel that same, "Aw man, I'd so much rather stay home." sometimes. Especially when it's -55 degrees and I have to shovel myself out just to go (last week, yuk.) But, I have a quote that says, "The only workout I've regretted is the one I didn't do." And that usually get's me going. The poster that mentioned half the battle is getting started, is so right. I say to myself, "Okay, 10 minutes and if you still really want to leave, then go." By the time I'm at the gym, suited up and get a little sweat on, I'm ready to really work hard.

I'm the exact same way! I hate working out, but know how great & full of energy I am after I'm done...

Sometimes a few new songs on my iPod will do the trick... I run on the treadmill so I'll search for the perfect song on iTunes at night and then the next morning I'm all excited to go and run to it.
This works occasionally... :)

If this is new for you, I would say that reaction is very common--at least it was for me. I didn't want to go and walk in the heat with everyone in my neighborhood looking at me. Now, I feel like I have lost my purse on the days I don't exercise. It's just a matter of time until it becomes your habit too. Congratulations for making this happen for yourself.

katiecron 01-21-2009 06:49 PM

wow! this is my life. i just developed the habit of working out the minute i get home from work. in fact, today i ended up in my shorts and sports bra before without even thinking about it. if i give myself even 20 minutes to relax after work, the workout will NOT happen.
but man i love the remainder of the night post workout.

besita 01-21-2009 07:23 PM

I feel the exact same way. Running and doing my DVDs makes me feel absolutely amazing but getting my butt in gear to do any of it is a real battle.

angelanicole23 01-21-2009 08:11 PM

I feel the same way and I find that if the workout is a little boring or it begins to feel like a chore its time to change it up. Also remember to find some things that are fun! I LOVE going to Zumba (Latin dancing) and I tried Kickboxing aerobics last night at my gym....However that said..there are STILL days when I come home and feel the exact same way...rather just stay home...I ask myself...what feels better?? Lazing around all evening or the feeling like I just worked my butt off??

WormwoodDoll 01-21-2009 10:57 PM

I LOVE working out and how I feel afterward. The problem is getting my arse to actually go to the gym!

kisskiss 01-21-2009 11:00 PM

I guess we're all like that. I have to really force myself to go the gym. Once I'm there, I'm usually good and want to be there. AFterward,I feel pretty awesome. But of course, the next day I have to force myself to go the gym and the cycle continues :)

badlilkit10 01-22-2009 10:47 AM

i was the same way when i went to a gym now its a little bit easier to use the glidder i have it in the living room so i can watch tv while i work out it doesnt even feel like im working out but i am and its been feeling great today is my no workout day but tomorrow will be back to my 2 :)

lottie63 01-22-2009 10:52 AM

I feel the same. way. Wish I knew!

Same with cleaning the house! ha!

KimL1214 01-22-2009 11:23 AM

working out releases endorphins that make you feel better mentally and physically, plus increase energy levels... eventually it will get easier as you start really desiring that positive rush... I just need to get off my butt and get started. Congrats to all that are pushing themselves and keep going!

CakeBatter 01-22-2009 11:34 AM

Yeah Kim that's it. I feel great after I work out. Like I have accomplished so much. But OMFG I hate going. It is sooooo hard to get it going. I go to the Y by my house but there is one by my job also and I have been going there so I won't have to pass home.

kelli32 01-22-2009 02:58 PM

I was just saying today how if I go home and cook myself dinner, eat and change clothes I will clean the house and hit the gym every single time. If I go home and sit down on the couch I will make myself a Lean Cuisine and not move the rest of the night. It's everything I can do sometimes not to let myself sit down right when I get home- because I know I won't get back up til bed time aside from some core work but I just slide down from my perch onto the floor for that lol.

freckfrecks 01-22-2009 03:58 PM

Thanks so much for all the helpful hints and awesome responses. It's good to know that I am not the only one who "works" this way.

I used to use this - I just would NOT sit down until I started dinner. Not even to take off my shoes. It was just too dangerous! I might tell myself I could just do a little prep, and then sit before finishing, but of course, once I started I always finished. I REALLY need to re-instate this policy :dizzy: It amazed me how something so simple made such a difference.

AmberD 01-22-2009 06:32 PM

Yes! Those first steps out the door or INFINITELY harder than anything I do at the gym.

I think knowing yourself helps. I know I will not go to the gym after work. I'm tired, I'm hungry, I'll find an excuse to not work out. But if I set an alarm by my workout clothes the night before, in the morning, I have to get up to turn it off. If I'm up, I might as well go.
