Discouraged - hit a plateau

And now I'm not really sure what to do. I figured because I have so much to lose that I would drop the first 20 quickly, but that's proving untrue. I have been at this weight for about 2 weeks now. What should I do? I cut back my calories as of yesterday to extreme fat loss which is 1500 calories a day down from 1700. Should I just weight a week from yesterday to see if this helps before I start panicking?

Are you going through your first monthly cycle after starting the weight loss? A lot of women plateau around TOM, then drop off quickly afterwards.

Chance0421 11-05-2008 05:58 PM

It's the week before. I'll probably start on Monday or Tuesday...but that's good to be reminded because I can't get annoyed at myself if I've done everything right & it's TOM.

Going 2 weeks without a loss is pretty common. Your body needs time to adjust to the weight you have lost. I don't think you need to stress out. Just keep doing what you're doing. If you go for 2 months without a loss, then you can worry about hitting a plateau.

If you stay at the same weight for 6 weeks, then you are on a plateau. Why are you in such a hurry? This is a time to learn a new lifestyle so you can maintain your weight loss for life.

Chance0421 11-05-2008 07:34 PM

I'm in a hurry because I'm tired of being fat. And I'm losing this weight so that I can have healthy pregnancies. We're thinking about trying for a baby in about 6 months, so I am feeling the pressure to get it off.

I know you expected to lose the first 20 quickly, but you're actually still quite small. Do you watch the biggest loser? The things they go through, and still the girls under 200 only lose about 2 pounds a week or so. I think losing weight under 200 is really just a matter of sticking to it and being patient. Have you tried calorie shifting? Eating a couple of large days (somewhere between your goal and 2000) and going back to my normal days usually helps me.

Chance0421 11-05-2008 07:56 PM

Kelly - Thanks! I certainly don't think of myself as smaller, but I guess when you think about it like that it makes more sense. It's just hard when you see ounces lost everyday for a month or 2 & then all of the sudden nothing. That's a little annoying. I will definitely try that fluctuating calories thing. I'm going to one of my favorite places for lunch tomorrow so that will be a flex day. Thanks again!

I too, felt that the first 20 should come off easy ... (can't adjust my ticker for I'm computer dufus-anyways) week 1 - 9 lbs, week 2-1 lb, week 3 - 3 lbs, week 4-3 lbs... 16 lbs total for one month is a huge accomplishment for me - and Look At YOU! Way to go - I know how hard you have been working to get it off - Realize What You've Accomplished and Enjoy Your Success! Your goal for your life will come true before you know it.

You will pass this plateau and be the person you want to be with each passing day - you don't know me but I'm really proud of YOU!:carrot:

2 weeks isn't a plateau. It's a blip. :)

Weight loss isn't linear and doesn't follow a strict mathematical formula. You can't count on consistent loss day after day, week after week. There are so many things that can influence whether the scale goes up or down or stays the same. And you might find that you tend to lose in fits and starts - many of us do.

Also I know you're anxious and impatient for the weight to come off, but the fact is that you didn't gain it overnight - you're not going to lose it overnight. And even though YOU have a plan and a timeline, doesn't mean that your body is going to obey your schedule. Eat healthy, exercise, don't drop your calories too drastically and the weight will come off ... even if it's not on the timeline YOU want it to. :)

ive now been 140 for about 2 weeks but i KNOW it will pass because im doing everything right and it will come slowly but surely ... i always say it took me about 5 years to put all this weight on its not going to come off in only 3 months.

Marms 11-05-2008 09:14 PM

I'm sort of in the same boat. The first 13lbs or so came of relatively easily but now I am stuck and I've been stuck for 3 weeks now and it's not TOM. Not to mention that my hunger as increased dramatically for no apparent reason. I'm still staying in a deficit but it's very hard. I'm giving it another 2 weeks and if I still don't lose anything I need to either drop cals or try some different types of exercise.

ChunckyMonkey - You are so sweet. Thanks! I appreciate your kind words. You definitely helped me feel better about my loss.

You all are very encouraging - thank you. It's frustrating but when you see other people saying that it's normal, it helps so much. And I know I'm doing what I need to do, and that just means that everything is getting healthier.

=)

Hey Chance-- I'm not much help, because I'm like you. Impaaaatient, lol. I've stayed at the same weight for about a week and I'm getting all squirmy and "come oooon!"(ish) I think that means I'm spoiled in having lost my first 7 lbs as quickly as I did, and I deserve a smack, lol.

But yeah, I know it can be hard staring at the same number day after day. But honey, you're down SIXTEEN LBS. That's a hella rockin' effort, and I know it'll keep coming down eventually. I have faith in you! Stick to it, darlin!

Things have definitely sllllowed for me too compared to how quickly I had fallen before. I just keep remembering and telling myself--if my calories and activity is right, it WILL happen. Slow and Steady wins the race.
