Question What is your take on Water Pills?

Hey Chicks,

I am kind of seeking some advice on these pills, having never taken them, I am honestly not too sure how safe they are and how they work with your dieting. I spoke with my mother this afternoon, who may I add - has tried everything under the sun in pill form to lose weight, and after I mentioned that TOM has caused me to gain 3 pounds overnight, she suggested those. I just don't know if i trust her judgement - the whole conversation seemed like a tawdry drug deal. Blech. I am personally calorie counting and have been drinking my water like a religion - so I am just curious of the science of these little things and what, if any, impact they have had on you.

Best,

Paula -la-la-la-lalala

its not a true way to diet. its not true weight loss - its water weight loss that your body will reabsorb as soon as you start drinking.
it can be very dangerous as well because they can drop your potassium levels dangerously low which can easily kill you.
only take these drugs if rx to you by an md or np for a specific condition.

My father has a heart condition and takes water pills (I'm not 100% clear on why he takes them... maybe to flush out his system? I dunno)... anyway, he takes a pill a day and basically has to "go" every 10 minutes because of them until they wear off.

It really seems like a pain in the @ss and not like something I'd take voluntarily.

I can sympathize. I was at the gym early last week during my TOM and I ran into a friend. This week, I ran into that friend again (I'm done with my TOM now) and she looks me over and says, "Wow, you lost a lot of weight in just one week." ... so not only do I feel bloated, but I am also noticeably larger during my TOM too. Ugh.

Not only am I feeling larger - I am like twitching for food. I finally beat the binge and now thanks to Mother Nature I want to sit on my floor, cry watching Lifetime and eat a jar of peanut butter.

I threw a Lean Cuisine at my BF's head tonight because he asked me what we should have for dinner. I am officially a cliche.

Bad idea and only a temporary solution.

Don't get started with diuretics. Your body is then going to adapt to them and you'll be stuck on them for good. It's a vicious cycle.

Diuretics are terrible for you & do not affect your actual weight. They dehydrate you, you lose some water weight. If it's your TOM & you're bloated, you're much better off just waiting it out & letting your body do what it needs to do. Just remind yourself that the weight isn't real gain.

That was a great article. Quick and to the point. Think I will have to be informing my mom that they are no good. Or I will just take them from her and flush them when she hands them over to me. She must be pounding them because when she spoke to me last night she said she had bought them after her "honeymoon" in July.

The woman is insane.

I love it. I think everyone should throw something once in a while.

Yes, pass on the water pills unless doctor prescribes for a specific reason. Some people experience swelling in their feet and hands, and doctors will often suggest pills for those, but never for weight loss. Plus you would just pee all day long, LOL!

I agree, they can also drop your blood pressure very low and therefore = not healthy. I would suggest drinking coffee or tea which are diuretics to help your unload of excess water it will make you feel less bloated.
