OT-Any 20 something students?
Hi everyone! I just wanted to know if any of you are in school? I am preparing to start taking my pre-req for the nursing program in Jan-09(god willing). I havent been in school in ten years and although I knows its never too late one cant help but wonder how it would be and so on. Between losing weight and getting my Degree in Nursing these are two goals I have to accomplish. Failure is not an option. Anyways if your in school what is your major if you dont mind sharing?

well I am 29...for another month or so, and I am going back to school myself! Ive been wanting to do it for years and finally got the motivation and determination to apply. I haven't been to school in ten years either, so i know how that goes!
So along with my weight loss which honestly comes as my first job, I will be studying art therapy. |
Hey Matilda! I'm 21 and about to enter my senior year. . .I'm an information science major (kinda like computer science) with a double minor in business administration and leadership studies.
My motivation for losing weight is my last spring break ever. . .my friends and I are planning on going on a cruise so I want to look bangin in my bikini :) |
I'm 20 and attending the University of Colorado. Going into my junior year, triple-majoring in Anthropology, Classics and Journalism. When it comes to my education, failure definitely isn't an option, like you said. But damn, dieting as a student is pretty difficult. The most successful I've been in losing weight as a student was during my freshman year, when I was so overwhelmed that I just wasn't eating. Most people gain 15 pounds their freshman year. I lost 35 (and I've gained it all back, and then some). The best advice I can give you is to only keep healthy food in the house. Yeah, it will take longer to prepare, but it will help. And always keep a couple healthy snacks in your backpack. I can't tell you how many times I ran out the door in the morning without eating, then went all day without eating because I was in class, and then stopped somewhere bad to grab some food to compensate. Keeping food with you helps. Good luck!!!

I'm 24 and I began an MA program for secondary education in Social Studies and, soon, ESL too, last Spring (so I just finished my first semester of the program). I'd taken two years off after I graduated from college and it did feel weird going back to school after that time. I also work fulltime now and live with my fiance, so it's considerably harder to get things done sometimes.
So I needed to get an "Incomplete" for one class because I simply couldn't finish all my work for it in time, etc etc. I actually have to get to writing that final paper so I can reregister! I'm SUCH a procrastinator! |
I hear you! I know its going to be a little harder to keep up with my fitness but I am so determined to do it. I will be very busy and on top of that I am a mom. I am at the age where challenge is so thrilling to me......I have to push myself. I know that we can all live the life of our dreams we just have to work for it. Its good to hear from folks trying to further their education.......

I'm 24, I'd completed my degree in sociology 3 years ago. But I'm back and taking distance studies courses to complete a degree in pyschology for I can get into the specific masters program that inserests me. I've come to the conclusion that independant study is NOT for me. But just like I've commited to weightloss I'm committed to finishing this class. Then I'm signing up for evening classes, I think that will be more my style.
lunabella, leaderships studies sounds really interesting. What exactly is it? I'd love to know more! |
I'm 24 still working on my Bachelors in business administration emphasis on marketing. I like the long winded ness of saying that for some reason. LOL! I went back to school two years ago. Like I went straight to college after high school, but then life happened and I had to take off for a while to find a full time job and buy a car and get an apartment, and then I finally went back to school. It was so hard at first; getting used to doing homework when I was sleepy and tired. I had never worked and been in school at that same time. At first, I was eating horribly! Pretty much rice crispy treats, and pop tarts because I could eat and drive with them at 6am. And then whatever I could grab in a drive through for dinner at 6pm. That's the year I put 30 lbs back on.
By the 3rd quarter (fall 2006) I got into a rhythm because I had a regular job. I had been doing full time temping most of the year. But this job was only 28 hours a week and I had Fridays off. I think it was important for me to get into a regular schedule. I started buying cereal and getting up early enough to eat it and prepare my lunch. I admit to dinner, even after all this time, still being an issue for me. I work 35 hours a week now and by the time I get home, I only have enough energy to maybe work out and do homework. Eating sometimes gets lost in the shuffle. All in all, it's going to take some time to get used to it but stick in there. Good luck! |
I am 20 years old, but I will be 21 in October. I attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I go back to school full time on August 19th. Next Tuesday! I am so excited because I love school and the atmosphere. I am going to be working out in the recreation center before and after classes when I have a long break. So even though I am going back to school, I won't be slacking on my exercises.
I am a Criminal Justice major with a concentration in computer forensics and a double minor in physiological development and communications. |
i'm starting graduate school in the fall for human genetic counseling/public health advocacy. and i'm (gulp) 29.
|
I'm 19, and going in to my Sophomore year at the University of Alaska. Double majoring in Sociology and Psychology with minors in Communications and Disaster Relief.
|
I'm 21, going into my senior year, and studying history and religion. I too am concerned about keeping to a program of weight loss while in school. My advice is just to set aside an hour a day to take a break from any school work you have and take a walk or workout. Not only does it give you a chance to exercise, but it also helps clear the mind and keep focused on your work, which can often seem overwhelming.
Good luck next year. |
hi :)
im 20 years old and about to start my third year. i'm a spanish major and im looking to take my PRAXIS in the fall so that i can apply to several school to get my Masters in the art of teaching (hopefully for secondary). I'm also minoring in leadership/american studies...between doing honors classes, holding a position in my sorority, and working...its hard to find time for the gym. but i keep motivated by remembering how great i feel after a work out, half the time my big sister has to drag me to the gym, but its totally worth it when im done. |
Hey Matilda and Everyone Else!!!
I'm 25 and I went to college right after highschool but had some personal issues and had to stop. I decided to go back to school last fall and get my bachelor's in sports and entertainment management my program is a full time year round program and i will graduate in august but classes will be done in may. :woohoo: although i love my degree program and i love to learn it is very difficult to balance work, school, weight loss, sorority stuff and life but i know it will all be worth it. make a list of goals and things u need to accomplish every day that helps me. |
Hey,
I'm 21 and going into my Junior/Senior year. (I'm one credit away from senior status ><). I'm double majoring in Spanish and English. After I graduate I'm planning on getting a Masters in Library and Information Sciences. Yea. I'm going to be a Librarian. How exciting right? :P Anywho, I've been having the hardest time figuring out school and working out. It's awesome to know there's a bunch of people on here that are dealing with the same stuff. Also, woo on the double majors people :P I tell people around here I"m doing that and they look at me like I'm insane. Which I could be. Who knows? |
shantroy - leadership studies is basically the study of yourself (your personality, how you work with others, your leadership potential), leadership theories, the history of leadership (I actually studied abroad as part of this program and took "leadership through the ages" in England and studied historial British leaders), and the application of all of these things to real world leadership scenarios. My minor is actually part of a leadership program we have at my school (you have to do the minor if you're in the program, but not vice versa) so I do all kinds of stuff through the program as well such as go to speakers, do community service, attend workshops, etc etc.
Did I miss anything belladisastro? ;) I'm stressing about senior year starting soon, especially because I'm taking some super hard classes this semester as well as maintaining an executive position in my sorority and working 20 hrs/week. . but I'm going to have to find a way to keep fitting the gym into my schedule!! I find that having workout buddies and keeping each other accountable is really the only thing that works for me. |
I'm 23 and still working on my undergrad degree. I've kept switching majors and schools for the last 5 years (as well as had a few doses of personal issues that made me drop two semesters in there), but I've finally decided to stick with one - Information Technology with a concentration in Network Engineering. I hope to finish up in 2 years. I go to Keystone College, and commute. I also pretty much have a minor's worth of courses in Computer Science.
I actually didn't gain too much weight my freshman year. Maybe 5 pounds. My classes all started late (11 AM or later) and ran until 7 or 8 at night. I worked the weekend at a fast food place, but I didn't really eat the food there too much, and while I was at school, I generally only ate something I brought or something from the Subway across the street. Unfortunately, I did become way less active. In 11th and 12th grade, I went to a karate class two times a week for 1 1/2 hours each time, to an akido class for one hour a week, and a weapons class one hour a week. Plus I practiced at home. Once college started, there was no time for karate anymore because of my schedule. I used to blame gaining 60 pounds my sophomore year on Dr. Pepper, but now I know better. Sophomore year, I had a more normal school schedule, so I started working around 40 hours a week, became a manager at the place and got free food, so I ate it all the time. Then we got Dr. Pepper and I drank 100+ ounces a day. So yeah, being inactive + greasy fast food + lots of soda = massive weight gain. But now I'm on the path to recovery! School is definitely less stressful than it used to be (found a college I really like), and I work in an environment that I can eat healthy with limited temptation. So yeah, I'm with you all on trying to balance weight loss with school and work and such. |
I'm going into my junior year at Cornell University in upstate NY in about two weeks. I'm majoring in Computer Science with a concentration in Cognitive Science. It's a lot of work but it's interesting and I love learning.
So far I've done nothing but gain weight at school, but this year I'm planning on losing. I gained the freshman 15 along with another 5 my sophomore year, so this time I'm getting a gym membership and watching what I'm eating more carefully! |

I am one online course away from completing my BS in Music Industry and Entertainment Studies with an emphasis in Music Business. I'm 26. It's been a loooong, strange trip. |
I'll be starting school in January. Although it's only for 3 months because it's an intensive course in Hospitality Management (Hotels, Restaurants etc). I haven't been in school since 2001! I'm 25 now, so I think it's now or never for me. So, I'm pretty nervous about a lot of different aspects. Getting back into being a student, managing my time between school, work, exercise and I live with my boyfriend...so lots to think about!
I think it'll be fine and I don't worry too much about gaining any weight as long as I can stick to my regular eating habits- I don't tend to fall for fast food very often...I'm more of an at home snacker...lol |
lunabella, that sounds really really cool. I wish they'd had something like that at my university. Maybe they did, but I just didn't look hard enough or pay enough attention. (My parents won't let me forget that I enrolled in unversity with the plans of majoring in theatre and psycology and when it came time register for classes I found out that my university didn't have a theatre program....opps! But it all worked out I loved the sociology program I ended up in) It sounds like a program I'd love to do now.
My biggest problem with school is I change my mind every 5 minutes with regard to what I want to be when I grow up. My career plan du jour is to complete my psych degreen, enroll in the Master's of counseling programming then become an educational consultant specializing in at risk youth. But by the end of day I'll want to do something different! |
shadowclaw- im a 23 yr old undergrad too.....im so ready to graduate
well ive been in school forever it seems like although i did take off 2 semesters my major is communication.....and i go to school at WTAMU |
I'm 22 and I'm in my last year of pharmacy school. I did two years of undergrad and didn't gain any weight. But once I moved into my own apartment and started my pharmacy program, I haven't stopped! It's hard to focus on school and stay motivated on a diet.
Good luck to you! |
Hi Ladies
I am majoring in Concurrent Education (Primary/Junior). I finished my BA in Child and Youth studies and am now completing my Bachelor of Education to teach Grades K-6. I'm looking forward to it. I am on the South Beach Diet and when I entered university I was a 6/8 from finishing the diet and now a size 14 and restarting. My ultimate goal is next Spring, instead of traditional graduation pictures, to have my portrait taken... Good luck to you all in the coming school year! |
I'm 21 and i finished my undergrad bachelor of arts last year, double majoring in psychology and German. Now I'm doing the first year of my masters in health psychology
|
Helloooo everyone. :) I just turned 19 last week and I'm going into my second year at the University of Chicago (best school in the world!!! Woo-hoo go Maroons! Hehe lots of school pride here. :D) I haven't exactly picked my major yet, but I'm leaning towards English, and I'm planning to minor in Spanish. I'm really concerned about losing weight and staying OP when I go back to school (I just started my plan about 3-4 weeks ago) but I'm hoping it will be ok. I lost a little bit of weight last year even without exercising and eating 99% junk, just because I ate less frequently and my dorm was waaay far away from campus (plus the campus is pretty big) so I walked around a lot. I'm hoping that if I actually put effort into it this year, the weight will just fly off! ;)

Hi everybody!
I'm 20 going on 21 in November. I graduated in 2005 from Highschool and since I didn't know what I wanted to do until now, I've just been working. About a year ago I finally figured out I wanted to do nursing. (Figures -- my mother and HER mum are both nurses -- had to happen lol) The only problem was I didn't take the science credits I need as prerequisites when I was in highschool so now I'm totally slowed down by doing correspondence! Ugh! My goal is to be in my first year of nursing by the fall of 2009. I know I can do it, I just forget to remind myself of that sometimes! WE CAN DO IT!!! |
Hello. :)
Just turned 20 on the 4th (woooo). I'm a junior at The University of Texas at San Antonio, majoring in Psychology with a focus on Criminal Behavior. Dr. Huang from Law & Order: SVU? That's pretty much what I want to do. Heh. :) I want to get my master's and bachelor's from UT Austin, but we'll see how that goes in a year or so. :) |
hi im 26, ive spent the last year at a community college but im transferring in the fall. my major is accounting, ill be done in about 3.5 years...ill be 29ish and my daughter will be 8!! OMG my school has an on campus gym so i wont have the excuse oh i dont feel like driving to my gym ha and the food there is so expensive (for me)that i have to bring my own lunch. good luck everyone!
|
Hey guys! I'm going to be starting back to school after a long break in January as well! I'm going for my associates in nursing....
and then plan on getting my bachelors and masters so that I can be a midwife. I had NO idea until this year you have to have a masters to be a midwife, kind of crazy! :) I'm so nervous about working full time and going to school (although I will be going to school part time until I actually get into nursing school). And part of the reason I'm planning on getting an associates and THEN a bachelors is so that I can get out of this **** hole I work in! ;) |

Out of the military...
And finally have time to resume my studies. Just started back today, actually. I'm in pre-med at VCU. Though I want to be a doctor, i'm actually a Chemistry major and i'm specializing in pharmaceutics and toxicology.
