The Fat Sibling?

I wonder if anyone is in the same situation I am in. My older sister can eat whatever she wants and never gains a pound. Also she has three kids. I'm the youngest and I have to watch what I eat everyday:mad:. In the past some people wondered why I was so fat when compared to her.

I've lost alot a weight since then but I still weigh more than her. She doesn't understand what its like to have been obese and shop in specialty stores or wear clothes made for men. Anyone in the same situation where they have siblings who can eat like pigs but you have to count every calorie.

carolineintx 02-26-2008 02:56 PM

Yes. My brother is skinny as a rail and eats the most calorie-laden junk you can imagine. Not the same as having a skinny sister to live up to, but frustrating to hear him complain that he can't put ON the weight he wants. I wish sometimes he and I could swap metabolisms, then we'd both be happy.

comawhite2818 02-26-2008 02:58 PM

I feel ya honey. All my life I've been the chubby one and my brother has been the skinny one. He has always been a fast food junkie, he loves ice cream shakes, he makes one everyday with a butterfinger bar in the blender. When we were younger he would make fun of me, but I think he finally realized that he was just lucky. Month after month of salads and calorie counting I would still be fat, and he would still be skinny. The world is just not a fair place.

samick0926 02-26-2008 03:04 PM

why on earth are peoples metabolisms so different? sometimes i think that there really is no way to define 'normal' because everyone is so different! I kind of see it as, when you are confident in yourself, you've got nothing to change.

not really relevant, but just thinking about your topic evoked a little spurt of wisdom.
lol

Not exactly the same situation, but my brother decided to lose weight months after I started, and he's lost just a bit more than I have now, and everyone notices his weight loss and not mine... Grrrawwrrr...

I think that has more to do with stupid men and their stupid awesome way they lose fat so quickly ; ; :tantrum:

SCraver 02-26-2008 03:14 PM

I am the fat sister... My lil sis is the skinny one, but she has to work for it, too. She decided back in Jr. High School that she didn't want to be chubby and lost weight then - she's been fine ever since... I envy that I didn't have the sense to watch my weight when I was younger.

Amarie2pt0 02-26-2008 03:25 PM

Hi - popped in 'cause I thought the post was about me  So, yeah. I share your pain. I have 2 older sisters, both skinny to my, um... not skinny. Seriously, we all grew up eating the same diet, and doing the same sports, etc, but had completely different weight outcomes. I have a picture of us when I was 5 (and they were 7 and 9) - I have bigger hips and legs than they did at that age! Yikes.

Now, one of my sisters complains that she can't find clothes - because the stores are making the size 2s too big.:dizzy: uh huh. And, up until recently, she ate candy as her main food group. Of course, now she eats really healthy so I can't spite her for that. The other sis is completely disinterested in food. Seriously, she has to make a point to eat, because otherwise she would forget. Sigh. How am I related?

TigerSoup 02-26-2008 03:54 PM

I *used* to be the non-fat sibling. But several years ago my brother decided that he was going to spend 2 hours at the gym every day and bulking up muscle/losing fat like crazy. Now whenever I see him he likes to make fun of people who struggle with their weight, especially girls, and rants on and on about girls who are "too fat" (when really most of them are perfectly heavy weights). In fact, usually he'll complain about girls being too fat who are thinner than I am, and then he'll be like "Well I wasn't complaining about you so why would you be offended?" He also walks around shirtless whenever possible to show off his chest, bragging all the while.

At the same time, being a jerk is just as unattractive as ever. =P

shantroy 02-26-2008 04:08 PM

My brother is the same as yours carolineintx. He eats anything he wants and is skinny as a rail. He's always been super skinny. When in first grade his teacher reported my mom to child services, b/c she believed my mom was abusing him by starving him! He certainly was not being denied food he just can't put on weight. In jr high he was drinking 3 or 4 Boost shakes a day along with 3 meals and snacks and in 2 months he put on 3lbs. I don't have to be super strick or really watch what I eat when maintain, but I certainly can't eat the way he does....

peachcake 02-26-2008 05:48 PM

My sister has always been thin. And always good at sports and always had good grades. I lvoe her to death but she's never struggled with weight. She's now about my goal weight and says she needs to lose. She is trying to eat better because she says that soon I will be skinnier than her (in a joking way).

shrinkinglizzy 02-26-2008 06:49 PM

Just a little bit of hope -- my brother is 10 yrs older than I am, so we were never really "compared" in that way, but his metabolism was always remarkable, as were his eating habits. So skinny! But now he's nearing 40...and, well, it shows. So I'm just sayin, butterfinger milkshakes will catch up one day!

IndianaGirl 02-26-2008 07:25 PM

My sister also is the thin one. I do have to give her credit though-she makes an effort at it. She joined WW a few years ago lost 20lbs and looks GREAT! I'm still struggling to maintain motivation to lose the weight I need to!

Fat Pants 02-26-2008 08:32 PM

Yup, I'm the fat one here. My brother is 16 months older than me, and weights about 60 lbs less. He's always had a very high metabolism and never gains any weight.

However, I know that, for a guy, that was kind of hard for him growing up. Other guys could bulk up easily, and he just never could. While I may have been envious of him at some point, I think he may have had just as many problems with self esteem as I did. He got made fun of a lot in middle school and high school because he was just too skinny. Now he's filled out a bit but still relatively thin.

And like someone else said.... those milkshakes will catch up eventually. My brother takes after my mom who had the same metabolism until she was about 30.

Smiling_Sara 02-26-2008 08:43 PM

I'm the oldest and the heaviest sibling. A LOT of my family is heavy or obese though. A LOT of family uses food as comfort and just a reason to get together. and lots of it. It is very hard watching my siblings eat things and realize they won't have to do anything where if I eat it I will have to be in a gym for a week to burn it off.

niclyn 02-26-2008 09:48 PM

Yep...same story here my lil sis, is "practically perfect in every way" In college she gained the freshman 15, and it only made her look better!

But she is really short (5'1 to my 5'6)...I can loose the weight, she wont be growing anytime soon. ;)

SlimmingDown 02-26-2008 10:07 PM

I am definately in the same group as y'all! My sister is 2 inches taller than me and wears a size 2 after having 3 kids in 4.5 years. Craziness. I am definately not that skinny.

To top it all off, my mom weighs about 85-90 lbs.

I am literally heavier than the 2 of them combined.

redlight 02-26-2008 10:45 PM

My mom is skinny and so is my older brother.

artsnsmarts 02-26-2008 11:09 PM

My sister and I were always about the same size through high school; sometimes she was a size smaller but she's an inch or two shorter, as well. Now, though, she's put on (I'd guess) 30 - 35, maybe even 40 pounds since going to college. The kicker -- she's an ATHLETIC TRAINING major!! I can't believe she can't understand the toll it's taking on her body to gain that weight...especially when so much of it is just caused by the way she eats.

She recently gave me her old cell phone when mine died, and I had to reprogram all my numbers and take out hers....there were 8 TAKEOUT/FAST FOOD places in her speed dial!! I couldn't even believe it. My family has always eaten heathily, with occasional splurges. She was an athlete all through high school (never a star athlete, but still...) and sports are her biggest passion, yet she's getting herself into a situation that I don't think she'll ever get out of. And she thinks her clothes are shrinking, not that she's getting too big for her clothes...on a recent trip home she brought a bag full of clothes telling me they had all "gone through the dryer one too many times" and that they didn't fit anymore. She's in such denial, it's unbelievable.

She goes to a school that has AMAZING athletic facilities and she has access to all of them due to her major...yet she never uses them. She's bought a few fitness videos, but they were all covered in dust when I visited her last time.

I just think it's sad. My mom has started being more active and has lost weight...I just wish my sister would follow suit as well.

readyfreddy 02-27-2008 12:21 AM

well im an only so this doesnt quite count but my MOTHER has always been skinnier than me. 118 was her heaviest weight 40 weeks preggo with me. awesome. when we go out men check her out lol.

she also buys my clothes and always has to add that shes "just sure it will fit because she tried it on and it was too big"

freshman15 02-27-2008 01:42 AM

So, my sister is a grand total of SIX inches taller than me, and she weighs about 20 lbs less right now. I guess I should be proud of her for scoring a stinking MODELING CONTRACT.... but I am a bit bitter. So yeah. I am considered the fat sister by a long shot in our family. At least my brothers both have athletic builds (read: not models) too... (although I am gonna be the runt by at least six inches.... so sad).

JasonsLea 02-27-2008 02:35 AM

Count me in! I'm the oldest and weigh more than my 18 year old sister, 14 year old brother, my mama, AND my stepfather! Talk about depressing. My sister works at Jack In the Box and EVERY night she comes home with crap from there and just consumes! UGH!

tiggy123 02-27-2008 05:14 AM

My sister and I were never really thin, just normal/chubby. Then about 5 years ago she got really slim because she got ill, and I put on weight so I was like the hippo and she was the gazelle. Anyway now we're almost on the same level or once I've reached my goal we will be around the same size. But her body type is totally different to mine, so we'll never look identikit :)

irishkatt 02-27-2008 05:36 AM

I have not one, nor two but three perfect sized siblings....ranaging from 5'2'' and a size 2 to 5'6'' and a size 4. The youngest, is all legs and its so unfair....although we look amazingly alike and its kinda motivating to see what I could look like when I reach goal. Although I do have better boobs then her. Im not going to hold it against them though as they all work hard and eat better then I have done. But its hard being out with them as they are all slim, pretty, dress well and Im me...and none of those things.

karmuz 02-27-2008 06:15 AM

Yes, I WAS. ALWAYS. I have two older sisters who inherited my mother's small frame while I have my father's large bones and heavily muscled figure. Even when I was thinner, I remember shopping with my sister and having to grab her 2's because the 4's were too small I was around a 10/12 then. My other sister is barely 5' and was a size 0 before it was "in" as she weighed about 85lbs in high school.
They have both put on weight (but in different ways) as they have reached their 30s - the oldest is 36, she's had 3 kids and been on a downward spiral ever since. She had to gain weight when she was pregnant and never tried to take any of it off. While I don't think she's quite near my highest weight, she is definitely my highest size (or bigger) now. She won't admit to being more than 180, but at 5' she's a size 22 now. My other sister is in the military and her "civilian" job is in the police force and i would think she's somewhere around 150 now, but she's very healthy - muscular and fit but looks maybe a little chubby for her size. We are around the same height .. I'm 28 now, younger than my middle sister by about 5 years, and about 25lbs heavier at just about the same height (i'm about an inch taller than her). She wears an 8, and I'm in a 10 these days, so we're just about the same size.
I am still viewed as the fattest though, not only by both of my sisters, but my parents as well. I don't know if that will ever change.

Zen Pharmacy 02-27-2008 08:15 AM

I am definitely the fat sibling. My mom remarried when I was 6 so all of my siblings look completely different.

My brothers are very very thin. One is a few inches taller than me and the other is a few inches shorter, but he's still hasn't hit that 17-20 year old growth spurt.

My sister is a few inches shorter and isn't rail skinny like my brothers, but is super athletic and toned. She's got crazy calf muscles.

And then there's me following after my dad's side of the family. There is a definite trend towards fat if you don't work your butt off in that family. I've always been heavier, but kept it in check through mad sports in high school, but some crazy injuries and being on crutches for 6 months and then a cane for almost 3 years put me right in the middle of my dad's family fat.

I shake my fist at my high metabolism siblings.

wisher 02-27-2008 10:43 AM

I'm in a bit of a different situation right now. Growing up I definitely was the fat sibling. My 2 older sisters were ideal weight and both very pretty and all that. But gradually they have both gained and the past year or two since I've started losing weight I've become the "skinny" one (even though I'm still a size 12/14!). It's a little strange because I've never been in this position before!

Happy Penguin 02-27-2008 10:48 AM

i know exactly how it feels my younger sister eats 24/7 and doesnt gain weight but shes always working out cause shes a cheerleader but still its all junk food! I hate it!
