Becoming slightly...frustrated

  • Heya there,

I'm starting to wonder just whats going on with this body of mine. It's being even more stubborn than I can be sometimes!

I'm running 5-7 mornings a week at 7.5mph for around 40-50 minutes. I'm also going to RPM/SPin classes about 3 times a week in the evenings and I'll walk anywhere over taking my car.

    I eat healthy and I don't overeat.

So why aren't I losing weight?? Argh!

My sister (we live together) says I'm getting "chunky" by which she means musclely so maybe i'm losing inches and not seeing it on the scale? But oh...it's so depressing some days!

I had to get that out...sorry guys

    Liv
  • I second this question. Seriously, I could have written that. I do wonder if with 3 spin classes and running 5-7 mornings a week you aren't overtraining? I always have a hard time believing that myself, but your body does need a lot of "energy" to maintain a physical pace like that.

But I do get it. Sometimes it is not as easy as watching what you eat and working out. It can be quite the guessing game. ARGH!
  • What's your calorie intake looking like? You may need to adjust it, either higher or lower. You say you "eat healthy and don't overeat", but that doesn't necessarily mean you're taking in the optimum number of calories per day, particularly if you're working out so much. It might help to spend about a week logging EVERYTHING you eat into Fitday to see exactly where you're coming out at, then you can adjust from there.

I'd say, you might be overtraining. Or, is it near your moontime? That can have you retaining weight. Are you drinking enough water? If you're dehydrated, you'll retain and it'll appear that you're not losing anything at all when in fact you're losing fat but hanging on to a lot of water weight.
  • Hit a plateau, perhaps- try shaking things up by trying a few new foods, cutting back on poor ones, and laying off one type of exercise in favor of something new and energetic.
  • Here's an old gal butting in ... measure, do you have a pants o'meter? If you're not shrinking, I'll bet your thighs are muscling up.
Please remember that scale weight is only one tool. There's body fat percentage, inches measuring .... I'll bet you're slimmer and that's good right?

The last few pounds are tricky ... we have to think hard about what we're really after.
  • Okies, a normal days food generally looks like this

    Breakfast - Muesli (250) & Yoghurt (100) + a piece of fruit (about 80)

Snack - Generally around 200 cals and sometimes I don't have one depending on hunger levels

Lunch - Salad roll, or salad with an egg, or tuna or cheese, or natural yoghurt with berries etc...usually not more than 400 cals

Snack - fruit or crispbread (100)

Dinner - varies (of course :P) but generally a protein and veggies between 400-600 cals. I have fish a couple times a week and usually at least one or two meat free nights. Lotsa legumes, tofu etc

So I guess it would on average 1700 - 1800 calories a day.

Looking at that it is possible I'm not taking enough for the amount I burn up. My run usually takes out between 500 - 600 and with the gym I guess i'm pushing close to 1000 burnt through exercise alone.

Susan: The pants-o-meter hasn't changed lol, all my clothes still fit, but i haven't taken measurements in a long time. It might be due!

Nikaia: I didn't know you retained through dehydration...makes sense now you mention it though. I do have a tendency to retain and given I drink a lot more as I sweat a lot thats very possible...

Oh well, I love running far to much to stop (barring injury), you're right...what do I want? Slim or athletic? lol.

Thanks guys! It really was a vent of momentary pure frustration lol but some interesting things came up
  • I think perhaps you're just not mixing it up enough. You're exercise looks great but maybe your body is just getting sort of immune to it try a new type of exercise to challenge your body
