Default Losing Weight & Quitting Smoking Challenge

Hi all ~

Just thought I'd share this quick story as I'm sure many of you have a family member who does these kinds of things to you.....

For the past several years every time my brother would see me he would make comments about my weight, asking me if I was eating healthy, if I was exercising at all, etc. I truly believe he was trying to help and not really trying to hurt my feelings but it did nonetheless.

He's a smoker. So finally I started asking him every time I saw him if he had cut down on his smoking, how many cigarettes a day was he smoking, etc.

One day I was really cranky so I came right out and said that he had no right to criticize my weight as unhealthy as long as he was sucking on a cancer stick. (Our mother is currently dying from cancer). So he says to me "When you lose 50 lbs. I'll quit smoking." hmmmmm

Well... he's scared now cuz when I just saw him at Thanksgiving and informed him I am only 15 pounds away from reaching 50 I also reminded him of his remark. We "reshook" on the deal and he says he'll stick to it so we'll see. Wouldn't that be a great added benefit to my weight loss if it gets my brother to stop smoking, too?

My daughter worries because I smoke. I made an agreement with her when I started all this and was weighing 198 when I got to 120 I would quit smoking. Last weigh in I was down to 164. She said are you still going to quit smoking when you get down to 120? I said I might break a promise to someone but it sure won't be you. YES I will quit smoking when I get down to 120. Going to be a hard day when I hit 120 lol.

Ugh. Bf and I are planning to quit smoking in January. I am exceedingly nervous about quitting smoking AND maintaining my weight.

I think exercise will be my savior.

You guys CAN do it!! I am an ex-smoker myself. Was smoking for a good 10 years at 1 1/4 packs per day when I quit. I tried and tried and tried, usually only making it until about noon... lol Then one time when I tried, it just worked. Kinda like this weight loss thing, you try and try and try and one time you just know that THIS is the time!! You can do it ladies!!

On a medical note... Chantix is working wonders for so many people you may want to look into it... We use it with our patients at the hospital and it has helped sooo much. Being admitted onto a psych unit is stressful enough and then to be told you can't smoke!!! That's where half our violence on the unit comes from cuz they just want a cigarette so the Chantix has been a God-send for us.

Sandra, I'm planning to quit in January and I'm thinking Chantrix might be the go. My bf tried Zyban once and it made him jittery and spacey. The Chantrix sounds like an all-round improvement and believe me, I could use all the help I can get.

Exactly. I tried to quit many times. I tried losing weight many times. It wasn't until I was 36 that I finally was able to quit cold turkey with no aids, and at 37 that I finally was able to start losing weight and keeping it off for good. I guess I just hit a point in my life and something in me changed. I wanted to be healthy and live a long time. And the path I was heading down was insuring that wouldn't happen. So I made a complete change in myself.

On a personal note, I don't think PLANNING to stop smoking or to lose weight is the right route to take. I hope it works for those who do make such plans. But I made plans. I made many New Year's resolutions, or decisions to start a diet next week, whatever. None of them ever worked. When I decided to stop smoking it was...this is it. No more. And when I decided to lose weight it was right then, that day. Not the next morning or even next week. I feel like it's just something that hits you, and it's a "gotta do this now" kinda feeling. At least it was for me.

Yep.... I totally agree. I did have "help" in quitting smoking because I had surgery and was in the hospital for 5 days where I wasn't allowed to smoke. I decided it was "now or never" during that time. That was back in 1990. I did relapse for one summer in 1997 from July 4th (lovely sister-in-law offered me a cig after a couple drinks and goofy me said suuuure) to October. Then I had to quit cold turkey again. ugh.

The weight loss was a "today", "right now" thing which has worked wonderful for me. For anyone interested, I posted a long post about WHY the weight loss program is working this time for me in the Depression section. Just be warned... it's pretty long.

Thanks for sharing ladies!!

almostheaven and OneLastTime,

It's true that things can only be DONE in the present. Sooner or later "next week" or "after the New Year" comes around and becomes now.

Some people plan so they can work up to it. For others it's just a soothing dream of action--one that they don't get to.

So that's why I think it's OK to plan... but it has to be the kind of plan that is marked in the day planner with a start date! "Today's the Day!"
