Just bought my little boy a new bike now I need one. I haven't biked since college and now I'm trying to figure out what type of bike to get. I'm not that serious about it, would like to enjoy parks and bike paths with my boy and go off on my own for exercise now and then. I see there are comfort bikes, road bikes, dirt bikes, you name it even at Walmart. What's the best. I'm tall.
I have a hybrid bike and I really enjoy it. I wanted to be able to do some not too rough trails but stick mainly to the roads. Sitting on the mountain bike felt way too aggressive for me. I'm not sure if a "comfort" bike is the WalMart way of saying hybrid.
Even if you want to buy at WalMart, I would suggest going to a cycling store. That way you can see what's out there, sit on a bunch, and maybe get a little advice about the size you need. That's super-important. A cycling store will have a wide range of products and prices so you know what you're getting yourself into.
I know I don't like mountain bikes, I'm tall and they feel too agressive for me as well. Yes I think the comfort bikes at Target, Walmart etc are hybrid bikes... They have gears but aren't meant for the serious off road bicyclers the info is saying anyways. I sat on one today that was quite comfortable I thought but there wasn't a darn person in the monster store to help. I went to the bike store and the cheapest bike was $350 although I did buy a bike for my little boy for $150 which is about $100 more then Walmart boy bikes, and his helmut was $35, double the price. I'm not a Walmart person but for just getting starting I'm NOT going to spend $500 on a bike for goodness sake. I don't even know how much I'll use it. So a $100 comfort bike will probably be fine for me but maybe I'll go back to the monster store and try to find some help.
What about a used bike? A lot of cycling stores sell used bikes or just check craigslist.com, I always see tons of bikes on there for very cheap that may just need some oil or new tires or something like that.
