I have been enjoying whole wheat noodles, with lots of sauted veggies and a fat free Spaghetti sauce called "Healthy Choice" but I just noticed on the label that there is sugar added
Can anyone recommend a good jar sauce, or homemade sauce that I can make in a big batch and freeze small servings?
If you're already sauteeing the veggies, then you're halfway there. I make a homemade sauce with Unico crushed tomatoes. I think there might be salt added but no sugar.
I sautee onions, garlic, peppers and mushrooms. (or whatever you like!) When they're nice and soft I add two cans (you get a nice big pot of sauce) of Unico crushed tomatoes (my husband thinks they taste the best) and cook for between 30 minutes and two hours..depending on how much time I have. Add any seasonings you like, we just use a lot oregano and, if you like the sauce a bit sweet, add some Splenda. You can eat it as is, make it a meat sauce or we just add Yves Just Like Ground. Makes a huge pot, tastes like a really good, thick, meat sauce and is really healthy.
I like this sauce so much that I can eat it as is, but it's nice over a small amount of whole wheat pasta.
Hope this helps and if you try it, let me know if you like it!
If you want a lower calorie one you could try the classico spicy red pepper. It has 60 cal, 1 gram fat. Per1/2 cup. No added sugar. I just bought it and have'nt tasted it yet so I dont know how good it is.
Well I like spicy! - so I'll give it a shot. I feel embarrassed for totally not reading the labels - I saw 'Healthy Choice" and just assumed there would be no sugar/salt/fat
How bad was this sauce I was eating? it says 8 grams of sugar per 1/2 cup - but I wasn't having that much, maybe a quarter cup. How bad would that be for my blood sugar?
Hey . . . it's not like you are eating it by the bowlfull, you know.
Don't forget that the amount of sugar listed on the nutritional panel also includes the natural sugar in the tomatoes and onions any other veggies that might just happen to be in there. Take a look at the ingredients listing too. As long as any added sugar is fairly well down the list, things really shouldn't be too bad. It is difficult to find totally perfect foods all the time.
So I hit the grocery store today for my canned tomatoes. ALL of the tomato products had sugar, not always added, but just because tomatoes have sugar natually. It ranged from 2grams - 10 grams per 1/2 cup serving so I picked the lowest crushed tomatoes I could find.
I am going to make it later tonight in a big pot, I have lots of onion, zucchini, red, green and yellow peppers, celery, mushrooms, carrots and GARLIC!
President's choice brand has a good brand with no added salt either. Don't know if they have crushed -- I tend to use diced for everything, including sauce.
I don't have a Loblaws near me, only A & P. I had a look at their Master Choice but it had one of the higher in sugars. I eventually went with an organic brand with no salt.
