This is a great site. You all seem so supportive. My dd is now 3 months old and has severe reflux. There have been so many things that I have to eliminate from my diet that I find myself snacking on terrible foods. I am trying to add soy milk this week so we'll see what happens. Right now I can't have dairy, broccoli or cucumbers. I am also struggling with how much or little I should be eating to help maintain a good milk supply. I would love any advice or suggestions!
Adequate hydration & protein are the biggies when it comes to milk production. I'd also advise you to be careful with soy milk; soy is actually one of the bigger allergens.
Yes l;ike others stated soy is a big no-no for many babies especially with reflux. What meds in your little one on? Kena is on Pepcid and carafete and seems to be doing much better. I also eliminated dairy, soy, chocolate, and caffeine. Chocolate and caffeine can make reflux for babies and adults worst so you may want to consider eliminating this as well.
Get on a calcium supplement right away!
Here is a list of safe foods that do not contain dairy or soy, you will also find good snack ideas.

I've had so much conspiring against my trying to breastfeed. First, I just wasn't producing enough that he refused to breastfeed and we had to supplement him. To get him to breastfeed, dad dribbled a bottle of formula down my breast into the corner of his mouth, after he latched on, to keep him sucking until the milk started flowing, which took a couple of days.
Then came gas issues. We've tried everything, from cutting out just about everything from my diet, with no effects. Now the doc has put him on Hyoscyamine Sulfate, as Mylicon was not working. He also had to prescribe Nystatin for his bottom, as he has more than normal bowel movements and they are explosive after he strains for awhile to get one out, and they were irritating his bottom to the point that zinc oxide ointments were not working. I've been reading online and found another little girl with the exact same issues. Their doc prescribed something called Levsin. I'm printing out some info on this with comparisons to what Mikey's been going through and asking the doc about it when we see him next Tuesday.
And after all this, I had to have an MRI today, and the cardiologist who scheduled it did NOT tell me a few things. One in particular was that I can't breastfeed for 2 days. ::sigh::
Just wanted to add, it is very possible that soy milk will affect your breastmilk production, because soy has so many phytoestrogens (same reason menopausal women LIKE it, may be why younger women should stay away from it). I just did a lot of research on soy-based infant formulas and the connection to early menstruation & breast cancer in the girls who were fed it, because of all the hormones.
My own daughter received both breast milk and formula, and she is soy-intolerant now, even though she never had soy milk or formula as a baby. It gives her gas & diarrhea now so it's just dairy or rice milk. I actually like vanilla flavored rice milk! It's pretty expensive though. Also this stuff called Almond Milks is really good too... ok I'm making myself hungry again.
Thanks for all the responses! Well I guess soy milk is out so I will try the rice milk. I saw the vanilla flavor and that doesn't sound to bad on cereal at least. She is actually doing much better than a few weeks ago where I was having to pump and thicken it before she ate in an effort to keep more in her. She is just on zantac which has eliminated the hours upon hours of screaming. She still throws up alot of what she eats but at least she is gaining wieght finally. When she was in the hospital, she had a few bottles of thickened formula because I was having problems with pumping. She didn't tolerate the formula at all. I am taking a calcium supplement and trying to eat more protein than nrmal so I guess I'm on the right track! Thanks again.
Sounds like you are doing great. I hear you on the screaming for hours on end, I am so happy the zantac is working. The vomiting will not end with any medication, the meds just help them feel better when they do vomit.
About the diaper ointments, zinc oxide is pretty harsh opne and can make dc problems worst, we only use A&D in our house it is so much nicer on there bottoms.
