The Greatest 2 Calories of My Week!

Hi all,

I'm sure other threads like this have been created so I am sorry if I am being redundant. Just wondering what diet products satisfy everyone. Being that most of you are American you have access to more product then us Canadians, (damn you Coke Zero, damn you).

For me it's Stewarts Diet Root beer. I on occasion during work will run over to a convenience store and pick up a bottle of this stuff to have with my lunch. I would be lying if i didn't tell you i feel this stuff my be part of my saving grace in the fight against my addiction to Coke. I love it, it tastes like Root beer. If they didn't put the diet and the nutritional info on the bottle i would not believe that it was. So that's my little diet product that helps me get through the week, what are yours?

srmb60 08-27-2005 09:10 AM

I am a diet Coke lover! I'm also sure I don't kow what I'd do without Ilene's pancake. I pretty sure the recipe is in the nutrition section.

synger 08-27-2005 09:45 AM

My two are not necessarily "diet" products, as in they are not low-calorie versions of something else. But they are the tools I reach for often.

Cottage cheese: It has a lot of flavor, a lot of protein, is portable (in little cups), tastes wonderful. I can take it to work for breakfast, or eat a couple spoonsful when I get home from work, knowing the protein in it will keep me from killing someone before dinner time. I use it in cooking to substitute for higher-fat cheeses. If I start getting the late-night munchies, I start with a spoonful or two of cottage cheese, and often that's all I'll need to cut the "salt/cheese" cravings. It's good stuff.

Protein bars: These are handy, portable, and some of them are tasty (some are just TOO sweet or cloying for my taste). I wait until they're on sale and buy a bunch, so they're not too expensive. And knowing I have some in my drawer at work, or my purse when we're at the fair, or at home when we're running around too much to eat properly, really helps me, mentally, to know I have an option. Again, for me, protein is the key. I was eating granola bars for breakfast for a while, and it's just not the same. They didn't keep me satisfied because they were all grain and sugar. I need that boost of slow-burning, long-lasting protein for satiety.

My food of choice to combat hunger ( and just because I love it) is homemade soup. For me, something warm is filling and comforting. I can use it as a snack food without a lot of calories. In a pinch, I will even use canned soup.

My pick-me-up is usually iced tea or fountain diet pepsi.

Astro fat-free, sugar-free yogurt in the indivdual cups! A large variety of flavours, good source of calcium, great to eat at any meal (or as a treat) and travels well.

I used to be a Coke freak, but now I can't stand it (seems so thick and syrupy). I eventually became a Diet Coke freak (after awhile the "tinny" after-taste disappeared and I loved how light and bubbly it is). However, I was drinking too much of it and getting headaches from the sugar substitute so I switched to refreshing carbinated mineral waters (lemon, lime or orange flavoured).

Not actually a diet food, but in the summer its watermelon! I just love the stuff and am happy to have it as dessert when the others are having cake or ice cream. I take it to work in tupperware containers to snack on during the day and on weekends/evenings will cut a slice when I just have to eat something between meals. Ahhh, when summer's over I'm going to miss that sweet, juicy, fleshy treat..... :(

I'm not a big fan of diety products -- I tend to prefer the full fat/sugar/whatever evil it contains thing itself, and just have it in small quantities. I find it more satisfying, and there's not as much icky chemical stuff going into my boday that way.

HOWEVER... :)

There are a few things I really dig. I've always loved cottage cheese, and over the past year or so I've moved to the lowfat variety. I love it for all the reasons synger listed, and it's just plain yummy.

The South Beach peanut butter bars ROCK. I'm not on the South Beach plan, nor am I a protein bar lover in general, but my boyfriend brought some home and they've become one of my favorite mid-morning snacks. They're a great energy boost and are surprisingly filling. AND...they don't taste diety.

I'm a big cheese purist, but I honestly can barely tell the difference between lowfat Laughing Cow cheese and full fat. One triangle along with some grapes or spread on apple slices makes me very happy.

And finally, I'm in love with Kokomo flavored spring water. We got suckered into trying it at Costco a couple weeks ago, and man. It's some tasty stuff. I like plain water and drink tons of it, but my boyfriend and stepdaughter not so much. They liked it so much that we wound up picking up two cases and it's almost gone. When I've got a hankering for something like fruit punch or sugary juice? It's a great substitute.

mousie 08-27-2005 02:27 PM

Diet Cherry Coke is my godsend. I drink it at lunch, then I cut off caffeine at 4:00 so I can sleep through the night. Otherwise I drink water. :)

I also try to eat natural/whole foods and just limit the amounts. One thing I have found, though, is Carb Options peanut butter. Because it limits carbs it's sugar free. Splenda is listed as the last ingredient--after the vitamins and minerals, so there's not much of that. I can't stand "natural" peanut butter, so this, for me, is a good option. :)

kykaree 08-27-2005 03:27 PM

Dandelion and Burdock diet is a real treat for me (it's kinda like root beer, but not - very Northern English!)

But my all time favourite diet friendly treat is a big punnet of blueberries. I love them!!!!

Inca's Momma 08-27-2005 03:52 PM

I so love me some FRESCA!!!!, that and my Diet Dr. Pepper (with or without cherry vanilla) :D

Also food-wise raspberries rock! I craved them during my whole pregnancy and even now I can't live without them.

DeterminedInGA 08-27-2005 04:34 PM

I was a coke fiend, but I have no control when it comes to soda so I've completely eliminated it from my diet. But now I appreciate water more than I could have ever imagined!

As far as foods go, I resort to 94% popcorn and dill pickles to cure any salt cravings and I turn to the WW chocolate mink bars to chase away my chocolate cravings.

matt_H 08-27-2005 05:15 PM

I think cottage cheese is the nastiest thing that man ever invented. You know that stuff is just spoiled milk right? What is the point of putting an expiration date on cottage cheese?...but I digress.

I don't know if this fits the category, but my product is turkey. Good old fashioned turkey. It is low in fat, high in protein, and it is good stuff. Having a turkey sandwich at lunch with lettuce, tomatoe, and mustard is so much better and healthier than something greesy or cheese filled.

One of the weight loss changes that I made is that I rarely, if ever, eat red meat now. I'm all about the turkey and chicken.

I absolutely love Coke Zero! I usually only drink water and vast amounts of coffee :coffee2: but I always pick one of these up when I do the grocery shopping. I also really like diet A&W root beer and diet Sunkist. One of my saving graces has been Blue Bunny fat free no sugar added black cherry yogurt. It's only 80 calories and I freeze it like ice cream which makes it sooooo good! :T I literally eat this stuff every day, and wouldn't know what to do without it, YUM!

cottage cheese and marmite on toast. :dizzy: makes me weak at the knees thinking about it. not really the healthiest thing in the world but sex on toast!

SuchAPrettyFace 08-27-2005 06:19 PM

Green tea. I have a large coffee mug I got @ Kohl's & steep 1 bag green tea w/1 bag peach tea. Perfect. :)

I like the occasional diet soda, but my real diet secret? Going grocery shopping & leaving healthier things at work.

Currently there I have green tea, peach tea, ff bavarian pretzels (so crunchy & good), and 10 cans of Campbell's Healthy Request soups. I only get a half hour for lunch & that's not enough. Monday I will get some bananas & apples & leave them there for easy snack options.

Still can't get Coke Zero in Canada :( The Ebay thing didn't work out.. & I sadly contacted coke and they gave me some typical corporate diplomatic answer like when Coke Canada feels the market is right.

irishgreengables 08-27-2005 09:34 PM

I second the watermelon. In the last 8 weeks of my pregnancy, I ate about one a day -- and not much else. That baby BTW LOVES watermelon. This summer, it is my diet food -- that in-between snack and my favorite dessert! Now if my darn kids would just leave more for me...

That is the sickest thing I think I've ever read.

Marmite is the English version of the Australian vegemite, right? I've never had it, but it looks nasty. I can't imagine adding that to spoiled milk curds.

lucky 08-27-2005 11:41 PM

Let's see, I have a few things that I couldn't do without. I eat and ounce or so of unsalted, roasted almonds almost every day. At only 35 calories, Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom Fudge Lites cure my sweet tooth. And black beans which are cheap and can be eaten as a side, made into soup, or used for a veggie burrito. Oh, and Munchies Ultimate Cheddar snack mix - I love that stuff. Finally, I always have Morningstar Farms Grillers Prime veggie burgers on hand. They are really good and make for an easy lunch or dinner.

slimmingsi 08-28-2005 11:32 AM

yes matt it is like vegimite. althoug alot nicer. its made from the yeast extract that is formed after brewing beer

kykaree 08-28-2005 04:52 PM

First you mention the cricket, now you're dissing the vegemite, I don't know Si!!!!

I can't imagine it with cottage though, yuck! Though I do like vegemite and grated cheese on wholewheat bread!

taekwondomom 08-29-2005 01:38 AM

I absolutely love the bags of prewashed, ready-to-eat salad! I go through at least 3 lbs of salad a week; more if my kiddos want salad too. YUM!

Huge fan of boneless, skinless chicken tenderloins. Low fat like chicken breasts, but already in a good portion controlled size and they cook faster too. Plus if you want to make chicken fingers you don't have to cut them up. :chicken:

All I can say is, "Rock on Coke Zero!" ;)
And I have recently discovered the delights of water with lemon! MMM!

I also adore Natural Ovens Bakery breads! I'm the only one who really likes them (dh claims the bread is to dry and stiff), I just keep a loaf in the freezer and take out pieces as I need them. I buy a softer, 100% wheat bread for the rest of the family.

And let's not forget, Kashi GoLean! Topped with soymilk and sliced banana it is an absolutely fabulous breakfast!

Jenaya 08-29-2005 01:48 AM

I am a Fresca fan. I also love diet pepsi but it doesn't love me (burns my stomach - damn it!). My favorite breakfast is soya milk, plain yogurt and frozen berries blended into a nice smoothie...could live on it! Cottage cheese with strawberries and grapes, to die for (sorry Matt). Turkey, you bet. It was 30 degrees out today (or 95 F if you prefer) and I was roasting a turkey for supper. Yum! Then you take those turkey bones and boil the heck out of them, freeze the broth and scrape all the fat off and add plenty of veggies for great soup. Neat topic Nash, gotta run and look after the turkey stock!

Goddess Jessica 08-29-2005 09:17 AM

I love making a huge pitcher of decaf ice tea and then adding sugar-free flavoring syrups (raspberry is my favorite). It feels a bit gourmet. Ever since this little girl (around 4 years old) told me that cola was not a color she would drink, I began to look a cola drinks a bit differently. Darn her!

I also am a HUGE fan of fresca and diet ginger ale.

I used to think that cottage cheese was completely disgusting but I ate it anyway because it's low in calories and pretty filling. After about two weeks of choking it down for breakfast every morning it started tasting good. Now, I really do like it. I think I heard somewhere that your tastebuds adjust to what you eat or something... Whatever!

My other "treats" are Diet Dr. Pepper (preferably Cherry Vanilla) and my new thing is Special K bars. They're only 90 calories and taste VERY good. Otherwise, I just try to eat from the food pyramid as much as possible, so lots of fruits and veggies...

jenhai 08-29-2005 10:36 AM

Talking about food on 3fatchicks? I am here!

Now days, I cannot life w/o

tuna cakes- (HM: 1 can of tuna (drained) w/ diced tomatoes, onions, green peppers, egg beaters, garlic, salt and pepper) cooked in med. saute pan w/ ff cooking spray

veggie (casserole) patties - HM also, my husband requested that we not call them veggie burgers because it does not come close to the burgers that we know and love. But, it is lentils, celery, brown rice, onions, g peppers, garlic, sunflower seeds, bread crums ff mayo, worchestershire? sauce - cooked in ff cooking spray

Salad salad salad w/ Just 2 Good dressing -Kraft?

Deli turkey breast w/ ww bread, ff chese , lots of fresh tomato, lettuce, avocados (toasted)

Almost Crystal Light (that is the Walmart Crystal light copy) I drink this stuff at dinner to substitute for my previous soda and punch habit. Any other time I have enjoed challenging myself to drink water water and more water all day (goal 128 oz).

I could go on and on about the food changes. Just because food is my thing. But, hubby and I have to feel happy w/ the new choices or we won't be able to hack it. :s:

Gardenwife 09-07-2005 01:22 AM

I really like this thread! There's nothing like focusing on what we CAN have!

One of my favorites is honeydew melon with a little vanilla yogurt drizzed over it. Oh, my...Move over on that toast there. ;)

Something else I discovered last year is how delicious pretzels are crunched up and sprinkled over low-fat ice cream. They give you the crunch and salt of peanuts, without the fat. YUMMEH!

ChocLabLover 09-07-2005 08:23 AM

Not to digress of the Zero Coke thing ;), but one of my favourite diet products is the Ice Cream sandwiches (Skinny Cow, love that name). In Weight Watchers (when I used to be on WW, I think they were about 1 point each) and it definately sastisified my chocolate/ice cream craving! I am mostly a chocoholic, so I every once in awhile I have to have my chocolate (not the low fat stuff, if I am going to go "off" the wagon, I go all the way), bring on the Belgian chocolate! :T

Nash 09-07-2005 09:10 AM

Looooooove the skinny cow ice cream sandwiches, and of course (on par with my normal complaint) Skinny Cow has a ton of other products (like ice cream cups) NOT available in Canada....

newfiedarling 09-07-2005 11:17 AM

My favourite is a chopped apple with 1/2 tablespoon of maple syrup. Yummy!!!

~Dee

alphabetsoup 09-08-2005 02:38 AM

Mmm, apple and Maple syrup sounds YUM!

My treats: I love carrots sticks - or baby carrots with a bit of salt. :) Also, I eat sunflower seeds almost everyday - they are such a perfect "munchie" for me while watching TV and I need something to do with my hands. :) I love the Nature Valley granola bars - the maple/brown sugar, the sweet and salty types and just the regular ones, they are all good. ;) I love the Kashi Friends cereal the best - but I've also recently discovered Vanilla Special K and it is DELICIOUS! Oftentimes for lunch, I'll make a smoothie out of 2 cups 1% milk, fresh or frozen fruit, and 1/4 box of dry pudding mix (any flavor). It's just so good and really filling. I'm big on dill pickles too - they are always great for a quick fix. :)

wip 09-08-2005 06:50 PM

Yeah, we Canadians miss out on some interesting products. Myself I am a big diet coke and coffee drinker. This summer I put pitchers of steeped green tea and herbal teas in the fridge. Really like those too. When I need a treat I like sugar snap peas that I have been eating by the bag  from costco (don't leave near one so I can't get very often) and low carb ice cream. I'm never sure which is better for me lo fat or lo carb. We don't get SB products here. Wish we did so I could at least try them.
