I set both short and long term goals. My short term goals aren't necessarily set to be something that can be done easily - that for me would be empty gratification. I don't try and be overly aggressive either. Instead I shoot for what is reasonably attainable. I also prefer to use occasions as opposed to week to week.
So, my long term goal is to reach 135 pounds - no end date since I want to get there no matter how long it takes. My short term goal is to get to 168 (8 lbs) by my birthday, February 27 - a reasonable goal at 2 lbs per week based on my current trend of weight loss. Finally, I have several "mini" goals to reach my short term goal - a plan for how I will meet my short term goal. Which brings me full circle since meeting each short term goal will eventually get me to my long term goal.
