pounds vs inches?????

  • Hi.
I have been doing a combination of cardio and weight training for the past month in an effort to get in shape.I had my monthly weigh in and measurements done today and I lost a total of 10 1/4 inches and 5 pounds.
The trainer says that is excellent for the first month but I am puzzled over only loosing the 5 pounds. Does inches count more than pounds??
  • I really don't think there is a certain formula for figuring it out. I know people who do the cardio/strength training and lose inches and no weight. It's just firming up your muscles and tightening your body; therefore, losing inches.
  • IMO, yes - Inches count more than pounds. Especially when you're lifting weights and doing cardio. Your body is building lean muscle that is going to weigh more than fat. The scales doesn't say, "You've lost 10 pounds of fat and gained 5 pounds of muscle." It just says that you've lost pounds. Some people can figure out their ratio of fat loss to muscle gain by having their body fat measured each month - but not me. So, I stick with the measuring tape.
  • 5 inches in a month is good but yes I'll say that inches count more than weight. Weight can fluctuate so much depending on the time of day, what you've eaten, how dehydrated you are, etc.
  • I am happy at least something is happening lol,It is just that I am around 300 so weight loss is a very important thing can you imagine me 280 pounds of muscle?I would look like those cartoon characters, and in the last month I haven't watched what I was eating neither so I am sure I could have lost more pounds.Well here is the breakdown of what I lost.
    5 pounds of ugly fat
    arms-.75 inches
    bust-1.5 inches
    waist-1/4 inches
    hips-4.5 inches
    thighs-1 1/4 inches
    calves-1/4 inches
    lower bust 1 inch
    lower waist-3/4 inch
