OT - Mysterious upper abdominal pain...anyone have this problem?

My dh had his gallbladder removed last November. All was well until about mid February when he started having pains again. Since then he's had countless doctor's visits and several tests all of which do not show any problems. He was at ER today and had a CT done and afterwards we talked to the surgeon who was on call and she said that it could be something spasming and he would have to follow up with the surgeon who removed the gallbladder (who he has been seeing up until today, he is just away this week). He does not seem to have any infections and is not having any other symptoms other than this pain. I was just wondering if anyone else has been through this and what it was. We are both getting very frustrated by this and he is getting very depressed. He feels like crap all the time and doesn't eat hardly because it makes the pain worse. He is going to collapse one of these days because of not eating right or he's going to have some health problems down the road from poor nutrition. I hope someone can offer me some words of advice or support. Thanks.

I had my gallbladder out when I was 18. Shortly after that I started having pain like that also. It was so bad I would just cry. Well, they diagnosed mine as esophogeal spasms..Pardon the spelling I don't recall how to spell it correctly anymore. They treated me with nitroglycerin for it..I know sounds crazy. It did not work. Over time it settled down. But, sometimes it comes back and the pain just kills me. I have to lay on my side in bed. That calms it a bit but if I move an inch it is hurting like crazy again. My mom once gave me a percocet once when it was so bad. That did help the pain really well.

Jen:

Make sure your DH sees a good GI surgeon/specialist. There are ducts that go from and to the liver from different organs, and these ducts can go into spasm. Certain pain killing drugs actually make the spasms worse. It could be something as simple as scar tissue but from your description, it sounds like more is going on. There are tests (some invasive) that involve fluoroscopy that would 'look' inside at what is happening and maybe that is the root to go (that person would be an interventional radiologist--and your GI doc would arrange that type of appointment).

The gallbladder usually processes fats and other things and has a lot to do with digestion. It doesn't seem to be a problem for most people once removed, but there may be a complication that arose with your hubby's operation.

Please do not let the docs dismiss this lightly. Pain is the body's way of saying, something ain't right. Also-have him do blood work like amylase, complete blood count, etc to rule out other possibilities.

Good luck!

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it is something that has dilated and is spasming but he has had so many test you would think that they would have found it by now. Very frustrating. He's started some new meds last night and I hope he will keep up with them, he's away this weekend so I won't be there to bug him about taking them.
